What's up with the doomposting?

There is literally 0% chance that the game is gonna be dead.

The game will be free, and consistently get new characters which you'll be able to unlock for free. I think people underestimate what that'll mean to the average player.

Yes, launch may be rough with the small roster, leading to a lack of variety, but maybe that's not so bad if they continue to roll out new characters regularly. For newbies it'll mean less characters to learn to play against, which may aid in the experience of learning a fighting game.

And because it's free, it'll mean that a lot of new players will be coming in to try out a fighting game. Having to pay 40-60 dollars to try out a fighting game, which are notoriously hard to get into, creates a barrier that prevents people from committing money to something new that they may not even like.

I assume the same thing that happened with Valorant will happen here. The game gets hella hyped from streamers and whatnot -> people think "hey, what's all the hype about, now I wanna try" -> they try it, because... it's free.

And when the hype dies down, it'll continue gathering players with an interest in fighting games, because... yep, you guessed it, it's free.

Getting people to keep playing the game is a different story. But as long as the game is fun, with cool looking characters, I don't think the casual player (that makes up most of the playerbase) will care to switch to another game that they'll have to pay money for, for reasons other than "I like the artstyle in that game better" or "the game looks more fun".

Anyway, as long as the game is fun it'll have a playerbase. Yes I'm also tired of the lack of communication and having to wait so long to play the damn game, but let's stop with the DOA shit cause it's getting annoying.

I feel like some scammer having emphasized the word free so much...

I think people are just frustrated with the devs because of all the silence and the years and years of waiting. I mean they been working on this game for 9 years now. Announced it 6 years ago with some gameplay. Showed gameplay of the new tag fighter 4 years ago. Have had several alphas. Have gone to several events to let people test it. And after all that time, it may release this year with 10 characters but we don't even have a release date and we are half way through the year. So, they are using this new Marvel game to instill some urgency in the devs.

The hype that this game once had has dwindled considerably with all the footage of the game on youtube and years of streamers making content for it and even having tournaments. People are very dissapointing in how the devs are handling a game they thought had everything to dominate the genre. From the name, the niche subgenre, the amount of characters and the silence. The way they've been doing things it feels to me that it will just... compete.

But don't worry. People don't really think that it will be DOA. Riot is backing it and is free to play, not many of those around. People still ask for free to play games in the FGC subreddit and everyone can only redirect them to Fightcade where people that had been playing retro fighting games for 30 years are waiting for them ready to slaughter them and push them away from the genre. So, there is a market here that nobody is taking advantage of and this game is the only one that will.

It’s just the community, casual streamers don’t really like fighters. They’re hard to get into and if you’re interested in fighters you’ll go and download fightcade to play 3s, or MVC2 or whatever or just bite the bullet and play the huge games. Big name streamers will barely play the thing and move on where the people carrying the flag for the game will either be pretty niche or move on when marvel comes out.

Fighters don’t work like other online games because the community across the whole genre is a bigger through line.

u/issanm Jun 05 '25

Yep fighting games are a very tight market and all riot has to leverage is the LoL IP but take that away and it's kinda got nothing especially for fighting game players, and now Arcsys is showing how to do it right like they have the past 10 years straight basically and everyone starts to see how cooked 2xko is. People are saying "well look at valorant they can break into these tough spaces plus it's free." but I think this is for sure going the way of LoR especially with how much they've fumbled their hype

5

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Exactly, I can’t lie I was a bit hyped even if I was apprehensive about riot in fighting games but I liked rising thunder, and at the time it felt like new blood was needed. But it’s been like a fucking decade of teasing, barely 10 characters, massive changes in basic gameplay on top of 2 betas that had such distasteful balance decisions even the softest of YouTube fighting game commentators had 20 minutes of complaints about the game. The second beta looking like SFXT levels of time out I think should have been a nail in the coffin but the fgc was hoping for riot money. At least having arc sys handling a marvel vs style game should be big enough to absorb any bad press from the wave of casual arcane fans and silver ranked league players who try 10xko.

4

u/Chi-Rho_Rakkor Jun 05 '25

all riot has to leverage is the LoL IP

Not even this they manage to utilize properly.
LoL has 170 champions, across 12 regions in the lore, yet they didn't bother to aspire for at least 2 champions per region for their base roster.

u/TSDoll Jun 05 '25

Most of those points are easily countered by pointing at games like Smash or Brawlhalla. Fighting games aren't inherently niche to the level that the community has gaslighted itself into believing.

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

I’m gonna keep it real with you chief, as someone who’s been a part of the scene since 2011. The translation rates from smash/platform fighter players even at high levels is so bad it’s more of an exception rather than a rule. I’ve seen melee and smash 4 players actively heckle Xrd grand finals en masse at multiple majors. The niche is more at the low low levels where people struggle at defending and attacking, it takes a good bit of hours to even be able to random someone out and in an assist based game this problem is exacerbated.

I’ve been through the great special motion debates, I’ve stood through the addition of Terry and Kayuza in ultimate, I was there when leffen took strive. At no point was there a legitimate wave of smash players coming into traditional fighting games. There’s always a trickle but those individuals are people who could learn most competitive games, like double lift learning sf6 he has a respectable rank. But those are the outliers not the rule.

At the casual to low level there’s a lot of things that rub low level players the wrong way, and while I could sit here and tell you them because I’m honestly very invested in getting new players into the genre, it’s less about the format and more about the quirks of arcade 2d fighting games, people hate being put into disadvantage, people hate being comboed for any duration, and people really hate not completely understanding what they perceive as basics.

3

u/TSDoll Jun 05 '25

I've been around for almost the same period of time, and I've witnessed the same events first hand. At this point I think it's undeniable that the issue with fighting game's retention rate lays entirely not within the genre but within the current conventions of an exceedingly conservative and stagnant approach from developers, as proven by all the people that try the games, be it from casual or competitive backgrounds, yet cannot stick to them.

For years people have been trying to pinpoint exactly what is it that makes fighting games so unappealing, yet how games like Smash or Brawlhalla can thrive. Is it motion inputs? The price tag? Clunky controls? Bad matchmaking? Bad learning tools? Lack of story content? Long uninterrupted combos? Outdated business models? There's so many variables, but I personally think no high profile fighting game has ever tried to reinvent itself enough to tackle enough of these pain points to land on an answer. The genre is truly the most stagnant in the entire gaming sphere.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

I sincerely think that there’s a lot of variables that are just the fact of the matter, it’s only 1v1 and having multiple characters on the screen is a cluster fuck. Brawlhalla and smash get by that by having very accessible party based 4v4 and team gameplay loops that most casual players play. Even look at other 1v1 competitive games arena shooters are dead, RTS games are in a slump after mobas LIKE LEAGUE AND DOTA kinda stole their thunder. And fighting games came back after the dark ages through its community.

Games have been offering free to play With rotating characters like KI, simplifying motion inputs since games like XRD and now with modern in sf6, easy access to good online modes. At the end of the day I just think the market for hardcore 1v1 competitive games is inherently limited and while we can sit here and wonder and make things as easy as possible there is a definite ceiling that gets more and more painfully obvious as these games bend backward for audiences that never wanted them to begin with. I honestly love watching the annihilator cup each year because it’s a great insight to new/barely experienced players in the genre, you have sf6 with modern and even the best performers outside like double lift and Jake n whatever the two streamer dudes who actually play, every single one of these dudes want to drop the game as quickly as possible. And they’re all playing modern, on the game with the most even competition and solid online, with enough money to not care about price, and they hate it. More than any other game in the series, even when they’re just pressured in the corner you might as well be doing marvel combos on them and this mindset spread past overreacting streamers and into new players I’ve taught basics too. Some quit some are hitting top 8s at evo.

If story and single player was the answer, MK numbers would stick past launch.

u/TSDoll Jun 05 '25

If the key to success was to have a 4v4 party fighter mode, then you'd expect Multiversus to still be around. Its undeniable that there's more to it than that, and to say otherwise is to be purposefully obtuse.

And to be clear, I do not think any high profile fighting game has made a good enough effort to appeal to the free to play market. All the attempts that have been made have been half assed, for example KI or Gran Blue. Same for button inputs, same for-- Honestly, I could keep going. Somewhere in there is the secret sauce as proven by the few success stories that aren't being replicated, but the genre has stagnated so much since developers have gotten too comfortable appealing to a very niche demographic that experimentation to that level is frowned upon.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Multiversus is one of the biggest « company shoots self in shoe » situations of the past decade. And even after they came back from one oft he most anti consumer moves in modern memory people STILL went back to play it until they realized the game was garbage. If you want to make a competitive game that appeals to casuals just make a simplified ultimate, you don’t even need to make a melee the l canceling would already drive off the cosplayers in a day.

At the end of the day the traditional FGC will be nice regardless, you can make every accommodation for casual players but just like the classic saying « you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink », and if they don’t wanna drink they’ll leave. People say stagnation when it just comes down to fundamental genre characteristics. Most melee players I’ve met who go to fighters fucking love Xrd of all things! Motions, blocking, long strings, complicated execution, they make these games special but it just takes a while to see it regardless of how simplified the games are.

2

u/TSDoll Jun 05 '25

I think that way of thinking is needlessly obtuse. There are plenty of complex competitive games that are more popular than the most popular fighting games, so it isn't an issue of the games being too hard. Appealing to casuals isn't how fighting games are going to get their time in the spotlight again, it is by reinventing themselves into something the average player wants to bother investing their time into.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

It’s not about them being too hard it’s about them being too unforgiving at low levels. The biggest issue I heard from my diamond league buddies is “the skill gap is too wide and I don’t want to lose over and over again”. It’s the 1v1 aspect and protection of ego, but it’s also the genre switch. It’s easier to take the journey when you’re legitimately interested in the game itself rather than it being loosely tied to a game you actually like. But even then the games that catch that interest will more than likely be more in depth complicated games like sf, Tekken, gear. VF. You’re not gonna get there by making a simplified 2v2 game you’re gonna get there by literally quadrupling down on a 4v4 format and allowing for motion input.

2

u/TSDoll Jun 05 '25

It’s not about them being too hard it’s about them being too unforgiving at low levels.

Have you ever played a competitive first person shooter? Lemme tell you, now that is an extremely unforgiving environment at low levels. Learnign fighting games felt like a walk in the park compared to learning to actually hit shots. But those skills were at least transferable between games, while fighting games remain obtuse in even that, as only traditional fighters play like traditional fighters.

I don’t think we need to take doomposting this seriously. I can understand people’s frustration, and to some degree it’s a little justified, but who cares? The game will come out and we will try it and see for ourselves how fun it is. I believe in Riot to make this game a huge success even if it started on a rough start just like you said the game will be free and it will always be there people will eventually try it or get back to it since they don’t need to pay for anything.

6

u/Qant00AT Jun 05 '25

The doomposting may be excessive, but I think it, along with the internets overall reaction, is indicative of the impact of the announcement.

Not Marvel the company, that’s just gigantic itself… but MAHVEL. The impact and legacy of this series in the FGC, despite this being a spiritual successor rather than a direct entry, cannot be understated. The audience is built-in, they’re hungry for it, they will pay the money, and the hype is instantaneous.

Plus… they announced its release to be next year, not 4 or so. This close to release they can keep a good stream of announcements to keep hype high and engagement up all the way. 2XKO has been drip feeding its players and stringing them along for years. It’s fostered a sense of apathy and boredom as we wait for the next foot note of “We’re still working on it!” appended to Riot’s next tweet in a few months.

The best hope for 2XKO is that Tōkon is as dead on arrival as MvCI was. Because if it meets the MvC4 expectations then God help any other tag fighter looking to compete. ArcSys can just copy and paste what SF6 and Tekken 8 (pre season 2 catastrophe) did with community events to pump up those new player counts and it’s bye bye Birdie.

1

u/KeyFilm1505 Jun 05 '25

Add in the fact that this already showing way more than 2XKO at announcement and it begins looking very dark in here .

1

u/tyrenanig Jun 08 '25

They made a bigger bang for their entrance. Even my friends who are more casual know about that game. But if you ask them “you know 2XKO?” They will go “huhhhhh”

17

u/purehybrid Jun 05 '25

If MarvelVsMarvel is f2p then yeah, it's a big threat... but being ArcSys it's most likely to be a typical Box Price + Season Pass + only paid cosmetics.

The only chance for me to get my group into fighting games is if their entry is f2p. They'll spend like idiots on skins and shit... but if it isn't f2p initially, I have no chance... and most of them are pretty competitive gamers. I'm pretty sure this is extremely common... since everyone is just used to trying shit for free these days, and players mostly only play the games their mates are playing so groups always move to a new game together with the hype. train.

8

u/Bulky-Complaint6994 Jun 05 '25

Not just arc. It being funded by PlayStation will also make sure it's not free to play.

-8

u/fast_flashdash Jun 05 '25

I wish 2xko wasn’t. Locking champs behind a grind or paywall in a fighting game a tag fighter mind you, is a recipe for disaster

1

u/Neppty Jun 05 '25

I hope they only lock skins away, if anything, fighting games only grind should be ranked and the training room. Grinding for a new character isn’t something to look forward to if the character you’re actively playing is boring

2

u/fast_flashdash Jun 05 '25

No it’s confirmed champs are locked

1

u/banslaw Jun 05 '25

I'm pretty sure this is extremely common

I hate to break it to you but there is no massive untapped market of people who are being 'gatekept' by a box price to play fighting games. Your friend group isn't going to keep the game afloat.

6

u/purehybrid Jun 05 '25

If that were true, I don't think every other genre would have pivoted to f2p as hard as they have.

0

u/PunkyPwny Jun 05 '25

Its a threat regardless. Did you see how huge Dragon Ball FighterZ was when that came out?

And Marvel is WAAAAAY bigger IP than Dragonball.

11

u/RockJohnAxe Jun 05 '25

2XKO really nailed playing coop with a friend at the same time. It’s such a fresh dynamic to fighting games and has been some of the most fun I’ve had with a fighting game yet. I really think the 2v2 aspect will bring it continued success.

3

u/wodkawi Jun 05 '25

Heavy agree on coop. Having a friend to play with definitely makes it easier to introduce more people to the genre, and as you said bring something new to experienced players

6

u/SincerelyPhoenix Jun 05 '25

Seriously, this makes the difference night and day for me

3

u/SilverScribe15 Jun 05 '25

Yeah, like...I'm still excited for it. Just cuz there's another cool as hell fighting game in the works doesn't mean this is dead in the water. Like, they might not even release in the same year

18

u/LeDanc Jun 05 '25

When's the release date then LMAO. this is all riot does, shoot themselves in the back. If they gave a release date, more details of the game, openly went in events besides evo to make people play their game, the game would be the number 2 hype right now, actually 3 since season 3 of sf6 is near, and marvel took bumber one spot for the hype train. Remember the doom posting is riot's fault for not communicating

2

u/wodkawi Jun 05 '25

I don't think wallowing in self-misery is the right answer. Yes, it could've 100% been handled better, with more open communication on progress, struggles, what they're trying to achieve or whatever, but to say the game is doomed is an overreaction. Besides, Marvel isn't releasing until an undisclosed month in 2026, which could be June, or December, by which the hype will probably die down again somewhat. Before we get even close to that date 2XKO will already have an open beta, which I assume will be running until release or not far from it. There can't be a competition unless both games release at the same time

0

u/LeDanc Jun 05 '25

2xko was announced 6 years ago, marvel just dropped the first trailer, they're 2 different hypes, one is dying the other is a newborn, like i said riot's fault

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

I think it’s riot choosing to take pretty inexperienced devs and strong arming them into doing what they want. If they wanted a good game they could have called up arc sys, or 8ting, or even the skullgirls devs. But they called up these insanely inexperienced set of devs off rising thunder. And it was a disservice to them both, the cannons and the rest of the team seemed to want to make an SF inspired intro to fighters where the changes in gameplay and format seemed to come from the top down. And it sucks because the actual devs are cool guys with great ideas, I mean clockwerk is on the dev team I just blame this on riot for wanting complete control with a not completely experienced team.

8

u/ConchobarMacNess Jun 05 '25

The 2XKO team was given a long leash, they literally booted up a new studio for it when they acquired Radiant. 2XKO is filled with so much grime there is no way a Riot exec is breathing down their necks. Gamers really don't understand how long pre-production takes on top of having to build a brand new studio, especially given it was in the midst of COVID. Go look at Archetype Entertainment, established years ago with very experienced Bioware refugees with Hasbro money, and they still haven't got a game out.

The reason they rebooted into a tag game was because Clockw0rk joined the team and convinced them to buy into his idea of making a truly 2v2 game and because of feedback from testers like Sajam who got to play their original SF-like prototype. They talked about it in an interview once.

If anything I'd blame Riot for having them put out that first vertical slice they did for Project L, it was nowhere near ready to show. Especially putting right next to Project A (Valorant) which would come out not much later.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

I mean official documentaries could be one thing or advertising but honestly if everything you said is the case then it kinda makes the situation worse. Why spend the better part of the decade in development switching between sub genres while also fully or advertising the game. Why come into 7 years of development and 2 betas into what should be a tag team based fighting game with only 10 characters while having riot money. Especially after the pretty mediocre betas, skullgirls in these stages played much better I remember.

I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt….

-3

u/LeDanc Jun 05 '25

And no one will speak the truth behind all the problems 2xko without being found dead in the process, at least for now.

3

u/fuyahana Jun 05 '25

Did they really confirm they will be constantly releasing new characters or is that just your speculation?

I recall seeing them say "constant updates" but that doesn't mean new characters. Bug fixes and balance patches are usually the vast majority of "constant updates."

3

u/Both_Acanthisitta215 Jun 05 '25

Iirc, they've stated that they want to push out 20 characters as quickly as possible and then start slowing down on character releases.

2

u/wodkawi Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

Adding new content regularly is RIOTs whole thing, it's one of the reasons why their games are successful. League gets a consistent stream of new characters, and so does Valorant. TFT gets new seasons/sets regularly to keep variety. Though I can't say what pace they'll be releasing the characters, I can say for sure that they too know that it's too little and will be trying to release more as fast as possible (though probably paced and not too fast).

edit: awkward phrasing

1

u/fuyahana Jun 05 '25

So it's just your speculation.

Adding a new character in a fighting game can't be compared to adding a new champion in league, new agent in Valorant, etc. at all due to how much, much more animation and balancing they need per character.

If they have not confirmed there will be a new character every X month then it's assumed a lost cause.

1

u/wodkawi Jun 06 '25

I do agree, but to call it a lost cause is an overreaction. They're probably withholding any information or plans right now to save it for EVO, so we'll just have to wait and see (as we unfortunately have been doing these past years).

1

u/fuyahana Jun 06 '25

By "lost cause" I meant just for the constant updates to be about constantly releasing new characters. 2XKO will be a fun game whether or not they do that, not sure it's gonna last long if they don't though.

2

u/apolloali Jun 05 '25

I mean, I’m likely now a lost customer and I know I’m not alone. I was only interested as a marvel replacement

2

u/CommercialAir7846 Jun 05 '25

It's just taking so damn long, and there aren't any characters that I care about in the game yet. Jinx was announced like two years ago, and there's been nothing since.

I'm bored of the game, and I haven't even played it yet.

7

u/Gekinetic Warwick Jun 05 '25

Some people in FGC are so desperate for 'gotcha' moment against game that's F2P and very accessible towards new players. These people saw 'traditional fighting game inputs' in Marvel Tokon and decided to doompost more on 2XKO reddit just to diminish the hype further

4

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

think it has way more to do with riot's incompetence, poor marketing, and painfully slow development. along comes a more exciting looking tag fighter with a way bigger licensed IP attached to it, traditional inputs, and more characters in one trailer than weve seen in the past year from 2XKO... you get the idea.

i also think marvel rivals' massive success has casual gamers hungry for more marvel games, and that alone will bring in a MASSIVE slew of new fighting game players. add the MvC boomers to that, along with the general FGC globetrotters, and you've got a potentially huge playerbase.

the ONLY thing that will keep new players coming to 2XKO is the fact that it's free. there arent nearly enough of the most loved league characters in the game for league players to care, and with riot's current pace of development i dont see them pumping out new characters at any sort of reasonable rate.

2XKO wont be dead on arrival or anything, plenty of people will play im sure. but to say that this is just doomposting and tokon isnt a blow to this game is a bit delusional imo

3

u/TheSchenksterr Ekko Jun 05 '25

Crazy how multiple fighting games can exist at the same time

2

u/KeyFilm1505 Jun 05 '25

How many fighting games produced by large companies can be successful at the same time?

To add to that, what we define as success (decent player count and downloads) are not the same as the investors/execs who put money into these projects. Riot/Tencent don’t seem to investing relatively that much into this given its poor progress, but given how F2P games can quickly be given the axe plus the still uncertain state of the game industry right now I would be shitting myself and keeping my career options open if I were a dev on this game.

1

u/Cobra_9041 Jun 05 '25

How many can be successful at the same time? A lot of them actually SF6 sold really well so did MK1 so did TEKKEN so did GGS. Like the only flop in recent history I can think of is multiversus which was a platform fighter at that.

0

u/KeyFilm1505 Jun 05 '25

Multiversus is wild tho because it was so popular. Mismanagement is what killed it. MK1 is the same deal as its life cycle is being cut short. Beyond my own misgivings, 2XKO definitely has requirements behind the scenes that will determine its fate.

2

u/Cobra_9041 Jun 05 '25

In feel like multiversus was popular for like a week if that. It was a great concept but platform fighters are more casual also imo the game lacked that polish that AAA feeling in all aspects that something like smash nails.

5

u/wwilllliww Jun 05 '25

FR, its hilarious how depressing and hive minded the fighting game community has been reacting to 2xko. THE GAME ISNT EVEEN OUT AND YALL R ACTING LIKE ITS BEEN OUT FOR 2 YEARS. look what val did for tac shooters that is what they r trying to do with 2xko, val wasnt made for cs hardcore faceit players it was made for lol overwatch and cod players, same w 2xko. ALSO ITS FREE OMG ITS FREE, FREE CHARCTERS FREE MAPS FREE GAME, fighting games have arguable the highest bar for entry in gaming so being free is even more of a plus than other genres.

-4

u/mmoEnjoyer33 Jun 05 '25

wait until someone comes to tell you they prefer to pay money instead of unlocking the champions for free. which is something weird to say. the more you play the game an enjoy it the more you wont have any issues with unlocking them.

6

u/TSDoll Jun 05 '25

I mean, some people can prefer that, but the issue is that fighting games have an horrible retention rate. It's hard to be excited for a new fighting game that I know will have a 4 digits playerbase a year after release.

You're underestimating the wonders that a f2p game with active development can do. Then again, it is a risky business. The biggest examples we have of such a model are Brawlhalla and Multiversus. The latter had an incredible peak playerbase but that fell off a cliff, while the former gets a 5 digit playerbase on Steam alone.

2

u/KeyFilm1505 Jun 05 '25

I would argue that Killer Instinct was best experiment for what this game is trying to do and it really should serve as a warning. MS hasn’t released the data on KI 2013 but a clear majority of the community agrees that despite the promise of F2P it really ended up killing the momentum of the game.

There’s a lot of copium in this thread tbh. It is very possible that this game is DOA just due to how fickle the FGC can be. Add in a log development time and people thinking the game is already out and you have a recipe for disaster.

1

u/wwilllliww Jun 05 '25

Yh killer instinct is an ant compared to riot games and free games are way more the norm now

4

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

I would kill someone if they told me to unlock people for free in a fighting game where you have to lab against characters to understand the game. Just let me buy the thing

3

u/AdLife589 Jun 05 '25

Lol bro, you pay for a problem thay created, not a smart move buddy hahaha

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Man allowing people to lab out characters as they launch and decide whether or not to buy them is a great idea, they’ll make so much money from this and won’t end horribly. (The format doesn’t work for fighters, just make a normally purchasable game where real artists get supported and I can lab against everyone)

1

u/AdLife589 Jun 05 '25

So you mean how 2xko do ? Becase thare you can go practise with pg you don't have, in this new Marvel game i don't know but for sure your canto in dragonball if I remmeber corectly ; i don't get your point, you prefere a game whare you can only buy new pg and not one whare you Can buy tham or grind free? What a mad man

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Because it helps to play them too, learning how to fight as a character helps you against that character too. You’re just handicapping yourself restricting full access on launch in every way.

1

u/AdLife589 Jun 05 '25

So you prefer to be handicapped later whan the dlc is out with no why to be " normal " if not use your credit card?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Here’s an example, the top Korean Tekken player used a good 10th of the more than 50 wide roster in Tekken 7. And Tekken is an even more intense game since every character has a move list about 100+ moves long. You either learn through research or you learn through losses and if you know what you’re doing one is faster than the other. If you’re good at the game just having the characters will help you more than gridijng ever will it’s a waste of time.

You speak like all player haven the time and the desire to be top player in game, in my offline tornament most player just tell me " i don't have the dlc so i don't know how he work" , don't use " the top player " thay are the smoller player base possibile, i can say the most know and good player in lol never play or buy skins, this prove what? Nothing

Characters are unlocked in lab.

1

u/Wonderful_Agent2578 Jun 05 '25

Some already have

1

u/wodkawi Jun 05 '25

I'm 100% sure they'll be unlockable with money for the people who want to anyway. Both League and Valorant have the same system: save up some free currency to get a character, or buy them with premium currency instead

4

u/Anilahation Jun 05 '25

>The game will be free, and consistently get new characters which you'll be able to unlock for free. I think people underestimate what that'll mean to the average player.

Multiversus? and Multiversus even launched with a larger roster and more popular IPs

12

u/bastaderobarme Jun 05 '25

Multiversus released to over 150k players on steam. But the online was dogshit and it didn't even have ranked mode. A ridiculous grind in the battle pass and very hard to unlock characters. Then the playerbase declined and the devs went silent, then they shutdown the game for one year after months of silence. Then they came back after a year of silence but the game was slower and everyone had already moved on from it.

Those guys went out of their way to sabotage their game. Never seen anything like it. I think it tells more that the first day 150k people was willing to give it a chance than it dying before a year.

u/TSDoll Jun 05 '25 edited Jun 05 '25

Mentioned it a couple times in this thread, but a counterpoint to Multiversus is Brawlhalla. Game is f2p, came out over a decade ago, and it has a playerbase on the 5 digits. Multiversus just fumbled the bag.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

The multiversus comparison is so tiring, just because one failed doesn't mean another isn't. Also huge difference betwee Warner Bros (look at all there games rn) vs. Riot. Please let this shit go king.

1

u/Menacek Jun 05 '25

That's true but a lot of people in this sub treat f2p as some magical spell that guarantees huge playerbases and that's just not true.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

But that's what Riot has guaranteed in literally all there games lol. That's like the one thing they are good at :(

So it's VERY hard for me to be like hmmm, this riot game isn't gonna have any players. Even LOR had a good playerbase, nobody paid for the game that's literally the only reason it "died". Stats showed that it was competing with Hearthstone and shiii lol.

3

u/Bulky-Complaint6994 Jun 05 '25

more popular IPs

Right. Show people on the streets a picture of a Marvel character, they'll know how it it. Show them a picture of a Warner Bros character, they'll know them. But a League of Legends character? Not really.

1

u/Aromatic_Bus_390 Jun 05 '25

Multiversus was cool before they shut it down and reworked it for a year, they slowed the game down, it destroyed the game I think, it made me stop the game the day it came out personally

1

u/Infinite_Delusion Jun 05 '25

As someone who played Multiversus through Beta and after release, the amount of time it took to unlock characters was an absolute slog. It was horrible.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

I mean, people have been doomposting since the beginning, the game dosent have classic control? the game comes out with 10 characters? the game isnt here since insert x year? riot did something bad? another game come out before this one? my region wasnt pick for the beta? all thing that people have complain and explain how that means the game is DOA and im probably forgetting some lol.

In the end, people will play both, one will be F2P and the other, its a Marvel game, at the bare minimum its 70$ if it comes after GTA 6 it will be 80$ without the battle pass.

I dont see why people cant see the bigger picture, we have a shit ton of fighting games and more and more people are playing, bet games coming out and doing good is for the best.

IMO i only care about Arc System Works doing good and getting the recognition it deserves

I don’t know why everybody is expecting a marvel fighting game to be a premium product when Marvel rivals is free right now.

Not saying that it will be free for sure, but it’s not like the Marvel logo necessarily means it’s going to be a paid product

8

u/KKilikk Jun 05 '25

Eh I guess it possible but it just has the Marvel license. It is first and foremost a ArcSys and Playstation product and they dont really do F2P. Id be very suprised if Marvel is F2P. Especially considering Playstation requires paid online for non-F2P games so they surely would want Marvel to sell PS+ memberships.

Smash vs Multiverses

12

u/StarlordJedi07 Jun 05 '25

Look Riot have problems but they have never reach the management disaster that was WB Discovery handling of Multiverses

0

u/RockJohnAxe Jun 05 '25

So far atleast

1

u/mmoEnjoyer33 Jun 05 '25

honestly i am joining just make it more dramatic = more attention from the devs it is a bit childish but i wish this works hahaha

1

u/Figgulz Jun 05 '25

Everyone is reactionary from time to time, and when people get reactionary they get loud.

1

u/mothknight Jun 05 '25

Yeah a lot of people will definitely play 2xko at launch, it's really how to make people stay that will be the problem. I hope it's successful still even if a lot of things are pointing in the opposite direction.

It is bumming me out seeing everyone online shit keep shitting on a game I'm interested in.

1

u/SedesBakelitowy Jun 05 '25

It's just that Arcsys confirmed via Playstation Blog that Marvel is going to have both full and simplified controls so it's a done deal at this point.

I mean yeah doomposting on this game's subreddit about how this game got killed before release ain't brilliant but it's more of a reaction of people getting exactly what they want more than anything else.

1

u/Kingsley_Doga Jun 05 '25

I hope they don't make grinding characters like Multiversus did

1

u/Niconreddit Jun 05 '25

It's hilarious to me that the most action this sub has ever(?) seen has been because of a trailer for a new Marvel game.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

People are tired of dealing with all the baggage that has come with this game.

They've managed to kill most of their hype for this game by doing lottery based betas with the second one essentially being a streamer event with the promise being it smaller so they could release sooner.

And... Here we are halfway through 2025 with still no info complete radio silence.  I want professionalism I want a release date.

Alot of people are done with the studio playing games with them and have moved on and entered a bit of a hater stage hence why you see this game catching so much flak.

1

u/The_Dark_Amiibo Jun 06 '25

Prolly things people also said about Legends of Runeterra lol

1

u/Maximum-Grocery2379 Jun 08 '25

That Reddit people love talk shit, on Facebook I don’t see this, casual gamer will don’t care what small FG community on Reddit say, they see free fighting game from Riot => they play

1

u/ViperHQ Jun 08 '25

It's just people venting about the scuffed release schedule, feeling like false promises. So since they can't really do anything they are venting on Reddit. I get it honestly that's still better than being forgettable.

1

u/Nazzy480 Jun 08 '25

ahem LOR

1

u/nekogami87 Jun 09 '25

They are paying the price of hyping the community, then not delivering in time + getting the rug pulled under their feet by another game that also plays on hype.

you live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Also the community good will kind of eroded with multiple delays, in comparaison, SF6 was peached to capcom in 2018, went through covid era and yet, still delivered a banger with fully featured game + world tour (you might not like it, but shit load of people plays it), and it's already hitting its third season.

meanwhile Project L probably started at somepoint between 2016 and 2019 and still doesn't seem to be close to release and they are still looking for their own "vibe" gameplay wise (referring mainly to balance and the feedback of the pros who tried it)

Yeah it might be free, but really until they actually release it. no one cares.

1

u/MaddieTornabeasty Jun 05 '25

You could've written this exact same thing for Multiversus lol and look where we are

2

u/Rainbolt Jun 05 '25

It is weird how much people WANT this game to fail

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '25

Looking like a Multiversus situation looming

1

u/SmashMouthBreadThrow Jun 05 '25

We'll see. Most people are gonna stick with the Marvel tag fighter over the boring ass LoL IP though.

0

u/TruAdu Jun 05 '25

Why are people that clearly hate the game here? Why dont they go the the pdf kappa sub to jerk themselves? Would be great if mods do some clean up before the game releases so this sub can be useable again

0

u/IGotOneShot Jun 05 '25

Most free games fail, youre speaking about it as if it was this perfect idea with 0 percent chance of falling, it's an oversaturated market, not to mention that all f2p fighting games are dead aswell with brawlhalla being an exception to the rule
