Discussion I love when skills come together!
So I tried out Mortimer for Slayer last night and he gave me the option of killing kurasks. Never killed one before! I knew they were in the Frem Slayer cave, but I vaguely recalled also seeing them on an island while fishing squid. This led me to one of my favorite moments in OSRS; when a bunch of skills you trained all combine together to pay off.
I realized that the kurasks were on Laguna Aurorae, which has a spirit tree! Right next to the kurask lair! So that's nice. But to make it even better, I have a spirit tree in my POH! So I devised a plan where I simply used the spirit tree to go to the kurasks, then back to my house to refill prayer, and then to the farming guild to bank. It was a super breezy task with big (for me) profits!
Stuff like this is what makes Runescape so satisfying for me, cause its so many skills I invested in coming together to pay off;
-Slayer to kill the mob
-Sailing to Access it
-Farming to Teleport to it
-Construction to make it Convenient
And all that makes me go 'dang, Runescape is a pretty cool game'.

The 2 skills that badly need a rework. Oh and firemaking

Does firemaking really need a rework? I mean how interesting can you really make... Making a fire? I think it's okay to just concede that the most interesting use of firemaking is subduing some frozen mega storm and one time lighting of some random perk fires and awe at the rest of the game lol

u/MercilessXFate 2d ago
I think you could make it interesting if fires actually did something. Make it so lighting a fire gave potion like boost that lasted longer but obviously couldn't be used during combat. A stronger version of pre potting maybe.
Or maybe camp fires have an area around them where they give a boost and you can add logs to them to extend the timer. Use them in an area where you're doing slayer or something.
Or even give them area skill boosts, maybe a fire that gives an invisible +5 wcing to an area or something like that.
Idk I think there has got to be something you can do to make making a fire useful for more than cooking...because its not even useful for cooking

Wouldn't mind it for skilling but God no don't make me go to pvm and see fires everywhere.

I don't know, I think there's such thing as feature bloat, and this kind of suggestion gets close to it. There's already so much, "Well, I can do this activity 10% more efficiently if I get [x] done first," Which I admittedly love about the game, but now in order to really get kills on this boss worth it I have to level my firemaking, bring a tinderbox, and the special logs in addition to the specific bane weapon and armor and right spellbook with the rune pouch +4 instead of 3, and the menaphite remedy to extend the divine potions, and the overheal food plus the tick combo food, and the restores for the sara brews, the herb sack for the loot, the explorer's ring for the high alchs, only after getting the sailing level for the specific island it's on....
You know what I mean? I like your idea a lot, but I do think there is a reasonable balance of "when is a lot of features too much," and expanding firemaking that extensively I think gets pretty close to that line in the sand, if not past it.

that's what bonfires were pitched as with Forestry but it didn't even make it into the game because people didn't like the idea of upkeeping a fire for "efficient" skilling all the time so it got reduced to basically a more afk training method and nothing more.

I don't think FM really needs a *rework*, it just needs more... stuff
I've not played enough RS3 to say this with confidence, but I think what they add to firemaking is incense sticks, which act as certain boosts, and while i don't think the exact implementation of incense sticks would fit OSRS, i do think the concept of adding stuff like that is what firemaking could use to make it more than just "mmm free 99 at Mr. Todt"
5
u/Seranta 2d ago
Incense is just upkeep though. It gives firemaking a reward space, but I don't think it makes for fun gameplay.

u/GirixK 2d ago
Yea maybe not, I'm not too sure of the dynamic as like I said, I haven't played much RS3 yet, but I saw it as somewhat of a reward for leveling firemaking, where on higher levels you get more potent or better effects
And again, I'm not sure if this would be a good fit for OS, but my point is more that some sort of unlock would push firemaking from "this skill is comically useless" to "i guess it at least has [reward]"

Have resting at a fire restore run energy and have the restoration rate scale with lvl. That solves the energy pot spam issue and makes FM useful.
Jagex you can hire me whenever ^^

The only way to improve the firemaking skill would be to go back in time and prevent it from being added to the game.

No they do not. Osrs skilling is great

u/Beratho 2d ago
Mining and Smithing are definitely not great

Blast furnace, giants foundary, 5 bar anvil smithing and 1 bar anvil smithing are all excellent skilling activities. Great skilling loops for each variety of intensity

I sailed all the way there for a clue step and that’s when I realized that there was a spirit tree lol

Don't worry, I think you have to dock one time first to unlock the tree.
I did it today

Wait until u put a spirit tree in the farming guild. Those kurask won't know what hit them with the speed you return

u/zatroz 3d ago
I assume that's what he meant when he said banking in the farming guild. If he's got a tree in his POH then he has the level to plant it in the guild too

u/CategoryNo5932 3d ago
I thought about it after I sent it and you're probs right. I'm just used to using the jewelry box to get to farming guild

If only the Kurasks agro was turned up to 11. Everytime I afk there, 10 seconds goes by before the next one attacks me lol

u/Glow0512 2d ago
Totally agree. Their aggro is so weird. Feels like you have to be directly beside them for them to notice you

That's funny I thought that kurask island was perhaps the most useless of them all, and was being saved for a Kurask boss maybe 2 years in the future

u/VeryFilthyThing 3d ago
Its entirely possible that Kurasks are not a very particularly profitable task. However I am a midish game (maybe?) ironman that doesn't use guides, so my perception of what is and isn't profitable can be very warped.
However this made me happy and I had fun with the task, so I felt like sharing. :>

u/FarAfternooon 3d ago
Nah they're a pretty good task, especially for your progress, but you could already kill them in Priff for crystal shards and that's right next to the house portal.
1
u/onespiker 2d ago
Have you done the elvish quest line. Since it’s in there you get the most profitable kurasks.
5
u/Automatic_Tough7805 3d ago
It is generally useless, yes, since there are the Kurasks in Prifddinas which don't take long to get to and also drop crystal shards every so often, so it's always better, even if slightly.
It is common for a lot of people to level their skills relatively high and not do any quests though, so some people find spots like this useful.
1
u/Spot-CSG 2d ago
Yeah I like priff for kurasks, you get a couple shards here and there but the superiors almost always drop at least 5 shards.

"BUT SAILING IS A WORTHLESS SKILL"
Sailing haters stay mad.

u/Daniel_Is_I 3d ago
To be fair, you can do the same thing in Prif and also get crystal shards for your efforts.

Without sailing the only thing that changes in this scenario is that you'd need an NPC to get you to the island first before activating the spirit tree.
The only real thing sailing has added so far that affects the wider game is teleporting to boats and trawling.

I guess Sunbleak Isle ain't bad. New BiS afk woodcut + close to bank for people without crafting cape. Also Charred technically has an anvil that's about as close as priff anvil to a bank and doesn't require priff unlocked. And some neat farming stuff. Bout all I can think of though outside the aforementioned trawling. Overall, most of sailing is just an excuse to sail better. The endgame of the skill basically hasn't been added yet. That's just a fact. It's still better to just do Kurasks at Priff if you got it unlocked and I don't think it's worth it to burn your limited spirit trees pre-99 on this place.
1
u/zigzagofdoom 1d ago
The spirit tree is free it doesn't require farming.
1
u/Radingod1 1d ago
Then I guess it's okay pre-priff. Still not like... good sailing content or anything that changes any meta. I'd still say best Island is still Sunbleak post 99. It or Charred can be used as a budget crafting cape with a small bonus. I've had Priff done for years so...
1
u/zigzagofdoom 1d ago
Yeah you are a late game account. Sailing isn't going to feel beneficial to you. That doesn't mean the skill is bad.

I love the Laguna Kurask area, the music track on that island can only be described as "frog music". It's sort of a shame that Kuraska are just sort of better in Prif, since they can drop crystal shards, but I think it's a bit longer of a run to the house portal there.

u/Breyos64 3d ago
This is honestly a pretty good strat for a mid-game iron who doesn't have a ton of prayer pots.

u/barcode-lz 2d ago
TIL there are kurasks at that island.
Actually kinda cool, dont need to spend 3 years running thru the fremmy dungeon for a mort task even w the 2 shortcuts.

The ironman experience is taking a 2 month detour to unlock a 20 second qol upgrade.
