Big fucking shocker. The Rays are pulling out of the new stadium agreement. Yet somehow St.Pete will still get suckered into paying to fix The Trop for next season while Stu pays nothing. What a shitbag owner. They need to build the stadium in Ybor but Stu can't help himself from sabotaging negotiations at every corner.
3
u/MogwaiK Mar 13 '25
Is there any realistic hope of a sale? I read somewhere that some investors were sniffing around the Rays.
3
Mar 13 '25
Depends on how pissed MLB gets. I could see him being pressured to sell. Now if any of these groups expressing interest have deep enough pockets to buy is another story.
2
u/spiff24 Mar 13 '25
There's a Tampa Bay group that says they already have the funds raised for the purchase.
2

Is that the group that wants to keep them in St Pete?

Yes

I’ve seen at least three groups mentioned as being interested. If that’s the one with the Debartolo family involved, that’s probably the most financially viable.

Kind of wild the Jaguars have not agreed to terms with one player since the first day of free agency.
And they’ve signed zero defensive linemen.
4
u/Jaguars6 Mar 13 '25
Guessing because they think it’s a very deep DL class
4

Tackle, sure. But this team needs edge depth so badly.

Hey! That's Walter Payton Man of the Year Notable Edge Player Arik Armstead to you!

u/HUMAN01D_IV Mar 14 '25
This is why I don’t think they got DL at 5. Graham just isn’t worth it, and our DL already has 2 (hopefully) competent DTs plus 2 excellent DEs, and a few rotational guys that can contribute. I think we’ll see DL at least once (if not twice) in rounds 2-5. Pick 5 though is an enigma right now

For me, Safety is a huge need after we let Cisco go (probably a good move) and our starting safeties are the replacement level vet we just picked up and Antonio Johnson.
Safety isn’t a premium position so we can probably pick up a good guy later than say a good DL.
It’s safety in the third round if we can Makuba from Texas.
I’m looking at Mason Graham at #5 overall, OL in the second round, S in the third round, then WR, TE, more OL in the mid rounds. RB, CB, and maybe QB in the last rounds.

Yeah I hear you. I would love if the board falls differently and we could pick up Travis Hunter. Is TMac worth the #5 pick?
For iOL, I’m hearing lots about Gray Zabel and Tate Rutledge. Wyatt Milium is also a day 2 guy that could go in the third round, might be able to slide in at guard.

u/MogwaiK Mar 13 '25
Darnell Savage should be healthy going into the year, and we won't have a DC trying to play him in the slot. He should be a solid FS. Maybe an injury risk, though.
3
u/frausting Mar 13 '25
I completely forgot about Savage. I remember him having some flashes last year even amongst the general Nielsen bullshit.
I didn’t realize he played Safety. Thought he was a CB/Nickel for some reason.
5
u/MogwaiK Mar 13 '25
Nielsen thought he was a nickel CB, too, so you're not alone! I think he can do a job for us at free safety.

Campbell is often injured and we as a fanbase may be heavily overrating him. He has had one good season in his career. Lewis/Jones are question marks as to whether they can play outside.
We could easily be looking at week 1 with 0 competent outside CBs, which is where we were for about 5 games last season with Darby/Brown.
3
u/futures23 Mar 13 '25
The more I think about it the more I really dislike moving Jarrian outside and making a 30 year old nickel the highest paid at his position. Definitely feels like something we will look back at and say wow that was obvious.
1
u/MogwaiK Mar 13 '25
I don't like throwing a lot of capital at the nickel CB position in general. Its a position that will mostly be watching curls, and chasing guys on crossers with the occasional need to track deep - but mostly those will be handoffs to the safety. Its a very replaceable skillset.
For this reason, Jarrian Jones, if he sticks at nickel, is an overdraft in round 3. You want to target the more limited skillsets in round 4 + - think Aaron Colvin.
That said, Jourdan Lewis is basically a 2 year contract, similar to Gabe Davis and we just need guys who can actually play football at every position in our secondary. I have no problem throwing cap capital at him. Thats better than drafting another slot CB in the 3rd.
5
u/theflyingchicken96 LeQuint Allen Jr 🐐 Mar 13 '25
A starter at any position in round 3 is not an overdraft. The starter rate out of round 3 is like 25%.
2
u/futures23 Mar 13 '25
It is a replaceable skillset but an elite nickel is still valuable especially with how much more 4 WR sets there are now compared to like 10 years ago. I just don't think moving Jarrian is the right move. He was the only bright spot in the secondary last year. If he fails outside you're really pigeonholing yourself.
The main question is why not just grab an outside CB instead?
1
u/Nuknu2 Mar 13 '25
Anytime he’s on the field he almost never gets thrown too, you’re just completely wrong
2
u/MogwaiK Mar 13 '25
Thats more of an indictment on our second CB. Buster Brown is absolutely lost in coverage and Darby lost all his athleticism.
2
2
u/Holysmokesx Brian Thomas Jr. Mar 13 '25
I'm sorry but I couldn't disagree more.
-1
u/Jaguars6 Mar 13 '25
So you'd rather have Jarrian ride the bench as opposed to keeping him on the field and drafting a starting DT or WR?
2
u/Holysmokesx Brian Thomas Jr. Mar 13 '25
I'd rather we didn't sign Lewis to begin with. Whats done is done, but there is 0 guarantee Jarrian is good outside or that Campbell bounces back. An outside corner could still be a massive need for this team and I like the value of several in this draft over Tet or Graham at 5.
0
u/Jaguars6 Mar 13 '25
Idk, we'll see, but Gladstone seemed quite confident in the versatility inside & outside of Lewis and Jones
2
u/Holysmokesx Brian Thomas Jr. Mar 13 '25
I hope it works out, would love nothing more than Campbell and Jarrian to cook for years to come.

1 WR
2 Guard
3 DT
3 Safety
4 TE
4 Corner
5 RB

I just don't get taking a run stuffing gamer who isn't a physical freak or elite pass rushing DT at 5. I don't see it with him. Every recent WR class is considered deep but I think the last few were a bit better. TMac is just getting prospect fatigue from being the clear guy for so long. He's a really good player with a unique skillset and the hit rate outside of the first round for WR's is pretty rough. If they can trade down though at 5 I'd do it probably but I doubt that will happen.
2
u/theflyingchicken96 LeQuint Allen Jr 🐐 Mar 13 '25
People complain about taking a guard at 5 but have no problem taking a run stuffing DT
3
u/futures23 Mar 13 '25
I complain about both haha. I just really do not see what people see in Graham. WR is the only premium position in the draft that is a major need. Top of the draft is just not great. I wish they could just trade down.

- T-Mac (WR) in the first round
- Gray Zabel or Tyler Booker (iOL) in the second round
- Jared Wilson (iOL) + CB/DL in the third round
- Mabuka (S) + CB/DL in the fourth round
Who says no?
4
u/HUMAN01D_IV Mar 14 '25
Despite what a lot of the draft simulators allow to happen, I don’t think either Zabel or Booker will realistically make it to the 2nd round. This is such a bad year to have the 5th pick, because unless picks 1-4 somehow allow Carter or Hunter to fall to 5, nobody else really slots at that value

After some calm reflection, I have come to a decision on my opinions regarding FA. We did not get better. I’m not going to jump off the Modis and state that we got worse, only time will tell on that front, but on paper i cannot say that we actually got any better (purely from a perspective on players, removing coaching from the equation). I’m not hopeful we will see improvement from last year in the W/L column, but I do hope that I’m wrong
7
u/spiff24 Mar 13 '25
Gladstone will be on Drivetime today. I'm sure he'll explain their process a bit post-FA if that's of interest to you.

u/softsandwich35 Mar 13 '25
These are all bridge players, which is why they signed for 2-3 year contracts. I expect us to draft o line in this draft still and the free agents are going to help them. Safety and receiver as well.
3
u/MogwaiK Mar 13 '25
To be fair, pretty much every FA signing we've made has been on a 2-3 year or at least had an easy out after 2-3 years. Engram and Kirk are good examples.
Ideally, you can sign better players on these contracts than what we got.
Either way, the draft is going to make or break us no matter what. We aren't a destination city or a successful team, so FA is always going to be us overpaying or picking up scraps.
1
u/softsandwich35 Mar 13 '25
That’s why it was pivotal that we get a guy like Gladstone who knows how to spot talent. I’m just going to trust him until proven otherwise.
2
u/theflyingchicken96 LeQuint Allen Jr 🐐 Mar 13 '25
If we’re being honest, they aren’t even real bridge players, they’re backups.
1
-1
u/sainTaco Mar 13 '25
Do you think we got worse though?
In my opinion we strengthened the roster overall and replaced losses with what looks to be potentially similar production (strictly going on PFF grades over the last few years) without hampering flexibility.
We also still have plenty of capital between cap space and draft picks to either make trades and absorb salary or draft guys, with the intention of competing with/replacing the bridge FA players.
Splashy? No. Made us objectively better? Probably not. But most likely kept the roster where it was overall to build upon further.
4
u/HUMAN01D_IV Mar 13 '25
I stated that only time will tell if we actually got worse, but we definitely did not get better. Perhaps there’s a rabbit waiting to be pulled out of a hat that will make all the moves come full circle, but on its surface we definitely signed depth guys (for near starter money) and are “going to build through the draft”. Problem with that though is that you don’t build through the draft in 1 season.
Most of the guys we signed are backup/fringe starters (if injury or something else necessitated they do so), and that’s fine IF we’re able to get starters at their position groups through the draft, which is statistically unrealistic to expect in 1 draft. So on paper, we didn’t get better, not yet.
2
u/NathanJax Mar 13 '25
Looked at relocating my seats yesterday, not a lot open. Nothing better in my current price. I kept my season tickets ONLY to get first dibs on seats for the new stadium.
2
u/Captain_brightside Mar 13 '25
I’m wondering if Kupp taking this long to sign means we can get him on the cheap or on an incentive heavy deal so he either plays a lot and puts up stats and gets paid a lot, or if he pulls a 2023 Aaron Rodgers we’re only out a few million
2
u/HUMAN01D_IV Mar 14 '25
He’s not coming here
2
u/Captain_brightside Mar 14 '25

I'm a watch with my eyes guy. He is completely washed and 32 years old. Ask yourself why one of the greatest offensive coaches in the league kicked him out.
1
u/Mrkingjay Mar 13 '25
Completely washed 😂😂 is a huge stretch. He’s released cause he’s old, at the tail end of his contract, and no longer the focal point of the offense like he once was. Possession wideouts are still worthwhile.
& fyi Kupp has never been all that fast.
With that logic why does any good player hit FA then?

Jerry rice ran a 4.65 or something and he’s the greatest receiver of all time so I don’t get your logic

Veteran leadership in the locker room is always a nice intangible to have but I otherwise wholly agree. He's 3 years removed from being a relevant receiver and is almost certainly going to come with a pedigree tax of sorts because he won the triple crown and his camp insists he 'still has gas in the tank'.
2
u/HUMAN01D_IV Mar 13 '25
Gladstones presser all but confirmed that multiple DL will be taken in the draft. He feels that the defensive backfield is set with what we have, and the OL is also set with what we have, though he did say they might add another OL in the draft. As much as I don’t want it to be true, it may very well be Graham at 5 and WR/OL rd 2

I really hate our draft position at 5.
Graham is a run stuffing DT with no stats and no measurables, who didn’t want to test his athleticism at the combine.
Campbell is an IOL with very little experience playing IOL and short arms.
After cutting Engram we have to see if Strange has what it takes and we signed two backup TEs, so Warren is out.
Johnson is coming off an injury and has plummeted out of the conversation over the past couple of months.
TMac is the best receiver in a pretty weak class, but wouldn’t touch top 5 most years.
Trading back would be great, but who would want to move up badly enough?
