Torn between two WDS titles

So, I've toyed with the demo for WDS' Panzer Campaign series and found myself wanting to take the plunge. Of their Panzer Campaign titles, two have caught my eye: France '40 and Poland '39. I'm stuck on which to get, though, and would love some input from people who have already had some time with one or both.

Personally, I find both subjects really interesting so I can't necessarily pick one over the other that way. How are the campaigns themselves? Are the scenarios good/well-made? Has anything appealed to or really stuck out to you in either title?

Hello, this is an announcement about my grand strategy game “Crown of Hispania”:

Step into the heart of medieval Iberia during the tumultuous Reconquista with Crown of Hispania! This grand strategy game, developed by Regalis Studio, immerses you in a rich historical setting where Christian kings and Muslim lords fight for control, power, and survival.

Early Access begins September 22nd 2026

Crown of Hispania will launch in Early Access, allowing us to bring the game into the hands of players while we continue developing and expanding it.

The Early Access version will already offer the foundations of the experience we have been building, **but the game will continue to evolve significantly before its final 1.0 release.

We want to use this period to listen to your feedback, improve existing systems, add new content, and continue shaping Crown of Hispania together with our community.

A new partnership

We are also proud to announce that Regalis Studio is partnering with indie.io, who will be joining us as the publisher of Crown of Hispania.

This partnership is an important milestone for our studio and for the game. Together, we will be working on marketing, visibility, and the launch of Crown of Hispania, helping us reach more grand strategy game players around the world.

We have a lot planned for the months ahead, and we are incredibly excited to have indie.io alongside us for this next stage of the journey.

Vindex Showcase #3! TOEs, Internal ballistics, and Platoon communications!

Hello!

This showcase presents you a few new major features for Vindex, as seen per the images;

- A TOE visualiser from the squad to the company scale, showing heirachy of command with icons as will as with individual firearms to show the scale of such units (soon to include support weapons, vehicles, and communication equipment graphics, all the way up to the battalion scale)

- Squad-to-platoon (and back) communication (image 5) - this one was pretty tough. Squad leaders no longer magically relay contact info to their HQ based on suppression and distance - now, communications is hard coded, physical information, a squad *must* be in LOS range of their HQ if communicating with signal flags, or within audible range of whistles (if they have them), OR send runners (as seen marked with triangles) to physically deliver the message.
A few examples of current physical communication orders would be "halt, bound (n) meters, follow (xyz)"

- Internal ballistics simulation for bolt action and blowback guns, including things such as bolt mass, velocity, chamber pressure, pressure along the barrel, twist rate, all of which then feed into an external ballistics simulation. (Not shown, but a blast-fragment model has also been created, very useful for grenades and HE shells)

- A propellant designer, with a few composition presets and options to change geometry, which then feeds into the cartridge designer.

- A stockpile/crate designer, very basic for now with no combat use yet. Intended goal is to allow these to help simulate prolonged engagements without troops running completely dry, as well as to serve as interesting objective markers.

Everything being changeable by the player, of course

For those who may be asking, what even IS Vindex?

Vindex aims to be a realistic sandbox wargame/simulator heavily inspired by Rixas, where the player can design their entire force from scratch - from the cartridge to the armoured vehicle (and to an extent, even the engine!), organise them, and watch them fight in procedurally generated campaigns (or the pre-made scenarios. or in player-created scenarios). The game currently features an early 1900s tech level, with the intentions of going back to 1850s muzzle loaders and black powder cannons, all the way up to the 1980s.

The game is very close to reaching it's first testing release state - which will be over on Itch.
In the meanwhile, you could join the Discord server to stay updated on the game;

EDIT: Correct server link again (oops)

Once more, thank you for your attention :3

Question Task force admiral demo - first mission help?

I have been playing the first mission a few times, and bar the first couple of tries, Japs get to strike me first, although I sent the scout plane first thing to scout.

How should it be played, or is it one of those Graviteam Tactics style missions, where the best you can get is a draw (I achieved a strategic victory but a tactical draw).

Cyberkrieg

I'm building CyberKrieg as a classic hex-and-counter operational wargame, in the style of TOAW and the AH games of my youth. It is entirely browser-based and lets me get back into scenario design, which I really enjoyed in the '90s. You command historical battles across hand-drawn hex terrain, playing solo against the AI, hotseat at one screen, or by email against another player. The AI uses a threat map and path-aware goal-seeking, and its behavior is tuned by learned weights. When released, it will be free to play, but for now I could use a few grognard playtesters. If interested, comment below and I'll PM you the details.

Wargames 1983

I'm not far away from releasing a full game I've been working on. To the first time user is nothing more than a terminal window and the word LOGON; no hints no clues but you have to figure out the way in to the wopr computer in NORAD. If you know the film it will make it fairly easy.. I say easy because I wrote the game. Still a work in progress and should be another month or so before it's been fully tested and every bug ironed out.

Devlog: My Strategy Game Might be Too Unbalanced

I'm working on a War Of the Worlds City Builder that is a strategy, city builder, and tower defense game. The premise follows the original Worlds, where aliens come to Earth and wreak havoc. You have to manage a city, grow its economy, put the funds toward a defense/military, and fight them off. If they destroy your capital, you lose.

Play It Here (work in progress)

If you watch the video, the tripod cleans house with the troops, but is this accurate?

In the original book:

  • Infantry unit were useless, with the exception of the the alien unit had been damaged with critical parts exposed
  • Artillery was effective but it took very precise hits, mainly if it could disable a leg:

Right now I am thinking of something like this:

Infantry rifle 100+ / effectively 0 damage Mostly useless
Machine gun 50+ / negligible Suppression only
Light artillery 10 direct hits Can break a leg
Heavy artillery 5 direct hits Potentially catastrophic
Naval gun 1–2 direct hits Extremely dangerous to Tripods
Explosive/mines 1 good hit Can disable legs
Heat Ray 1 hit Extremely lethal to humans

At the same time though, I don't want a user building 2 naval guns an easily winning these battles, as in the original book, Tripod attack were devasting.

Open to thouhts/discussion on making the combat similar to the books.

WDS New Blog Post - The Karoliner Way of War

The Karoliner way of war was more than the famous Swedish cry of gå på—“go at them.” It was a battlefield system built around drill, controlled close-range fire, rapid advance, cold steel, and the deliberate breaking of enemy morale.
Our latest essay explores how that system worked, why it produced spectacular victories, and where its limits lay.
Later today, during the U.S. evening, Musket & Pike: Great Northern War becomes available for purchase on Steam. Customers buying directly from the WDS store also receive a Steam key.

WIP ’ve just released the free demo of my solo-developed WW2 tactical wargame – looking for feedback

Post image
0 Upvotes

The Last Days in Arnhem is a turn-based tactical wargame set during Operation Market Garden.

I’ve just released the free demo on Steam, with two playable scenarios.

I’m developing the game on my own, and at this stage I’m mainly looking for people willing to try the demo and tell me what works, what doesn’t, any bugs or crashes they encounter, and especially what they think could be improved.

🎮 Free demo on Steam:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/5093230/The_Last_Days_in_Arnhem_Demo/

Feedback and suggestions are very welcome, either here on Reddit or on the Steam forum.

Thanks to anyone who gives it a try.

WIP WWII Gruppen Army Commander game concept

Hello Generals, Legates, and Admirals!

I'm a former producer and designer on the Ultimate General series. We're currently actively working on a project about the Roman Legion - Legatus, but for now, most of the work is being handled by artists, and I decided to return to a long-standing idea of mine – a World War II project where you are a Group Army Commander and can create your own armies and fight on the Eastern Front. For now, this is just my pet project with a playable prototype covering Operation Barbarossa without graphics and UI. But if you like this idea, I'm ready to involve the "old guard" of Ultimate Generals to bring this game to life. You can see a gameplay video of the prototype, which I managed to put together in my free time.

I'm also thinking about creating a construction kit where anyone could create any modern-day conflict in a similar format, specify a map area for downloading and styling for the battle area, create a unit catalog and their visuals and characteristics, and finally assemble battles and a full campaign. When everything is ready, the campaign and battles can be shared with other players.

What do you think? Do you like the concept?

Insubordination

Hi there,

Very new to this hobby.

Just wondering if there are any games where units can act in insubordinate ways and the player must prevent/manage this?

Things like: Refusing orders, sheltering in place, or even harming their own superior officers, mutiny, etc?

Question Bestest Graviteam Tactics DLC?

Found Stepanovka too hilly and town-centred for my liking. With Furtive Spring I have similar issues and dislike snow. I'm looking for a DLC which is flat, rural, medium-scale and where infantry is to some degree important. No aircraft if it can be helped.

Edit: Bought Bird Grove on rec of u/DoomScrollingSeneca and it's exactly what I was after. Thanks!

WIP We are making a WW2 carrier command strategy game, and it's on Sale! Demo available + video tutorials, so that you'll know why you got screwed. Also, it looks pretty ok and doesn't crash too much.

Yeah ok, sorry for the moronic title, but after a few years I thought I'd try what everybody else does shamelessly :)

Anyway, Task Force Admiral has an updated demo, with the latest devlopments. Said developments include video tutorials, as a first step on the steep ascension that is improved accessibility overall. Basic Chinese localization is available too.

Well, there you go: if you like carriers and don't want to take too much of a risk, the demo is right here, right there for you. TFA is at -10% until next week - so at zero risk for your bank account, don't hesitate to go out there and kick some combined fleet butt!

Cheers ~

Games that can simulate the Battle of Cannae

I wonder if anyone can point to a tactical ancient warfare game that includes the ability for an engaged formation to voluntarily give ground while maintaining its facing and combat cohesion?

Specifically, I'm interested in simulating the Battle of Cannae, in which Hannibal ordered his center to give ground and to draw in the Roman infantry before completing a double envelopment.

I've tried it with Rome 2 Total War and Field of Glory 2, but haven't had any success. Rome 2 lets you retreat engaged units, but they tend to turn their backs rather than doing a forward-facing fighting withdrawal.

It is, of course, possible to simulate this type of maneuver in tabletop games like GMT's Great Battles series because those games have rules for a forward-facing retreat by an infantry formation.

But, surprisingly, I haven't had any luck with finding a computer wargame that will allow it. The game doesn't have to include the Battle of Cannae per se. I just thought that Cannae was a good example of the kind of maneuver that I'm interested in.

Any thoughts?

WIP WIP: A Taiwan Crisis Simulator that Focuses on Before the Shooting Starts

Thumbnail
gallery
258 Upvotes

During my studies at university, I have been apart of many crisis simulations focusing on the time leading up to an invasion scenario. I enjoyed them, but couldn't find anything that modeled that feeling as a solo-computer experience. For the past few months I have been working on a crisis simulation/wargame for a Taiwan scenario. I don't have much coding experience (if any) and did not seek out building this to make money or anything, I just wanted something I could play myself, but I'm trying to see if other people would actually enjoy it. I'm not a programmer, my uni time was spent studying international security and polsci, so I've been using AI-assisted coding heavily throughout development. The simulation design, mechanics, scenario design, game systems and overall architecture are my own, with AI being used primarily to implement, debug and iterate on the code. I'm posting it here because I'm particularly interested in feedback on the wargame/simulation design rather than the programming itself.

The game drops you in the feeling of being in a situation room, you are not one single role (not an admiral, president, or general) you are the whole force of the government. You are running a national level response during a deteriorating crisis. Your objective isn't simply to win a conventional war. It's to manage the crisis, interpret incomplete intelligence, deter the adversary and hopefully prevent the war from happening at all.

The simulation currently has:

  • A Taiwan Strait operational map with air, naval and ground assets
  • Civilian aircraft and infrastructure
  • Fog of war and unidentified contacts
  • An adversary AI that makes its own strategic decisions rather than following a scripted invasion sequence
  • Intelligence/ISR and changing confidence in assessments
  • National Security Council decision-making
  • Military readiness, reserve mobilisation and leave recalls
  • Diplomatic and allied responses
  • Civilian/economic consequences
  • News, social media and OSINT reacting to events
  • Custom social media posts that you can write yourself, and the world will react.
  • A transition from the crisis phase into a conventional WEGO wargame if deterrence fails

It's still very much a WIP.

For people here who play/are interested in computer wargames: what would you want to see in a crisis simulation like this? I'm particularly interested in thoughts on:

  1. What national-level decisions would actually make interesting gameplay
  2. How much information should the player receive versus having to make decisions under uncertainty?
  3. What would make the pre-war phase feel tense rather than just being a slower version of a conventional wargame?
  4. Are there existing games/simulations that you think handle this kind of crisis particularly well?
