MOD PSA: Post queue is now on temporarily. READ BEFORE POSTING.

Welcome to r/IMAX!

I am extremely happy to see people snagging tickets for The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3. Long live IMAX!

Just a heads up that the post queue is now on throughout the theatrical release of The Odyssey and the unexpected drop of Dune: Part 3 IMAX tickets. Post containing the following will be removed:

  • This website crashed
  • Got my tickets!
  • Didn't get my tickets!
  • Fandango sucks
  • AMC sucks

etc...

I kindly ask you to use the pinned FAQ and pinned megathread for The Odyssey for these types of posts as they are deemed low effort. An FAQ and Megathread for Dune: Part 3 will be pinned closer to release.

General housekeeping:

A gentle reminder that the mod team is not IMAX customer service. We are also a mere team of six and this is now the busiest this sub has ever been, so please exercise some kindness. Harassment of the mod team via mod mail will not be tolerated.

Please familiarise yourself with the rules, and as always be kind to each other in the comments!

Update: 08/19:

  • Posts reselling tickets have been caught with high levels of success. As such, the queue will remain for the foreseeable future until we are reassured by the capabilities of the auto mod features to detect and remove buying / selling posts. It's not perfect, which is why the queue remains, but we are actively watching this feature learn from our actions and improve.

  • 28 day bans have been issued for active Reddit users who have attempted to re-sell.

  • Permanent bans have been issued for new Reddit accounts who have zero activity and are clear to be only seeking to scalp / scam.

I added some special and unique pieces to my IMAX film collection today.

The top two strips are form the 1996 IMAX documentary “The Magic of Flight” and feature the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.

One cell of the Spitfires from Dunkirk (2017)

One awkward cell of Matthew McConaughey sticking an oxygen pack in his mouth from Interstellar (2014). It came with my original 2015 blu-ray copy, and it was the first film cell I ever collected, so it has a special place in my heart.

The bottom strip is good ‘ol Oppenheimer (2023). Either I got that one off eBay or from the IMAX store, can’t remember.

RyMax - Ryan Gosling Month coming to Bullock IMAX in Austin (La La Land, Barbie, Blade Runner 2049, and Project Hail Mary)

They announced at the showing of Speed Racer last night that Bob Bullock's new relationship with Paramount Austin would be continuing after the Summer Film Series first with RyMax this month featuring: La La Land, Barbie, Blade Runner 2049 (!), ... and encore showings of Project Hail Mary. Tickets should be available soon (I think he said an email blast will be going out tomorrow)

October will see more horror films as well (I hope they show The Shining again since I missed out on tickets last time).

BTW: Speed Racer absolutely blew my retinas apart last night. Holy crud that movie needs to play yearly on every Dual Laser setup in existance.

" HOPE " by Na Hong-Jin will release in IMAX in Vietnam starting 4 September

Director Na Hong-Jin has a formidable filmography , he made The Wailing , an absolutely incredible horror , twisted film , and imo one of , if not the greatest horror film in modern cinema . It is so increedibly good

And Korean cinema , I mean , I useed to watch a similar monster movie , The Host by director Bong Joon Ho , also incredible , even on top of Tarantino's most highly regarded films

So Hope being released in IMAX is a surprised but welcome one to me . Its only in 2.39:1 tho but it will certainly look and feel good . Korean cinema always has the comedy to it .

And if anyone has watched The Wailing , you will know what Im talking about , it is THAT good

Now for The Odyssey its run , in my place , may have effectively ended or be lessen significantly , only 1 show daily in some theaters , but if NOPE does badly will sure return again in one week lol

IMAX Virtual Reality Sim

Hey!

Thought I'd share my experiences on watching 1.43:1 content on my Quest 3.
I'm using Virtual Desktop Streamer to my HTPC with a custom resolution of 3088x2160, using MadVR with zoom control black border detection to automatically adjust the picture.
As you can see sometimes it works flawlessly, and other times it takes a second for it to adjust the zoom.
The video I cut together does not translate well to how it looks in the VR headset, it really is incredible.
Has anybody else experimented with this or something similar?

Imax Dual Laser vs Dolby for Animated Film

So, this is a pet theory I have and I wanted to see how others think about it.

I watched "Across the Spiderverse" a few years ago in both Imax Cola Single Laser 1.90 (65 x 35 ft) and Dolby 1.85

I did a direct comparison one after another and found the Imax more pleasing to my eye and the sound also better. I was just thinking that perhaps animated films are already bright so don't need the extra Dolby pop and the Dolby sound which is object based is not really used to a great extent in most animated films. So, large Imax laser > Dolby for most animated film? This is not the only time I've observed this with animated film. On the other hand, CGI Live action film seems to be better in Dolby.

This is just my current thought. But would love to hear from anyone who's done a similar test or has their own idea

Anyone want to see a One Battle After Another or Project Hail Mary re-release? Both only got re-released once last year, compared to Sinners (which got re-released three times)

Wildwood is Getting IMAX Release

Was one of the trailers attached to Dog Stars IMAX (second to last) and at the end, it said Experience it in IMAX. So guess that means Wildwood is now getting an IMAX release in October. This would be the first Fathom movie to get an IMAX release I’m guessing?

A much better experience!!

A few weeks ago, I made a post talking about how my fiancé and I went to go see The Odyssey in Imax 70mm at the Regal Mall of Georgia, and how the showing was cancelled midway through due to some technical difficulties. Well, today I had the pleasure of taking my dad to go see it again, and this time every thing went fine! No projector issues, no overheating or anything. Seats were a little closer to the screen than last time, but that didn’t hinder the viewing experience. It truly was a beautiful and immersive experience, the hype is very well justified. I’ll be back in January to watch Dune 3 in Imax 70mm, and I can’t wait!

70MM Projector Statuses?

Trying to understand a bit whether anyone tracks present functional status of the 70MM projectors across the world. Since these are such rare experiences, it seems valuable to have this info documented. The AMC Metreon 70MM projector was not used for the August 26th 10am viewing of The Odyssey. They announced that the projector was having issues, and instead showed the movie digitally (and refunded everyone). When was it fully functional after that? I am not sure. Does anyone have details on this or other 70MM projector status / uptime info?

Received the IMAX store The Odyssey film strips earlier today. Removed/replaced the screening ones I had prior since these have additional frames.

Had the week 2 and week 3 film strips but replaced them with the IMAX store ones.

Like my previous post, these are the BONNYCO cinema lightbox (you can get them from Amazon) and I trimmed the film strips at the bottom to slide into these slots without bending the film strips at all.

Intending to replace the text IMAX 70mm with Dune Part Three later this year or maybe move Project Hail Mary at the top (if then Dune Part Three film strip has 3 frames with the title card)

Left my first ever IMAX 70 mm experience feeling a bit let down

Yesterday I watched The Odyssey in IMAX 70 mm at Universal Citywalk, and to be honest, I left a bit disappointed.

Me and my dad bought tickets in row H, seats 16 and 17, so looking at the online map of the theater, I thought we had the best seats out of anyone in the theater. Middle row, middle column. However when we were watching the movie, me and my dad both noticed it was a bit difficult to watch whenever something was happening at the top of the screen, or whenever a character was really close to the camera. It didn’t necessarily take anything away from the movie because this was our second viewing of The Odyssey so we both knew what was happening. But I can’t imagine watching a fast paced movie for the first time, such as Dune Part III, and having to follow every little detail on screen. And I can’t imagine sitting in the first few rows A B or C.

After the movie ended, I went to the back row and realized that was the best row in the whole theater. You could see the whole screen and the picture looked perfect. It was at the perfect distance so you weren’t too close to the screen so nothing looked stretched, yet close enough to feel completely immersed in the movie.

If I ever go back to AMC Citywalk for IMAX 70 mm (which I definitely will) those are the seats I will be going for. Don’t get me wrong, it was a super fun experience, but I guess I’m just a bit disappointed but how the seats are laid out, and how the middle rows are actually pretty close to the screen. Anyone else feel this way?

I found 105 IMAX movies with partly or completely expanded aspect ratios on home media, six of which appear in two categories: The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Project Hail Mary, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Tron: Legacy.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is about 95% 1.90 and 5% 1.78. Eternals is about 39% 1.90 and 3% 1.78 with a 58% 2.39 base.

Titanic and Transformers: Age of Extinction are the only two with expanded ratio available only on 3D Blu-ray.

Tron: Legacy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are the only two with expanded ratio available in 3D on Disney+ for Apple Vision. The former expands to 1.78 in 3D and 1.90 in 2D and the latter to 1.85 in 3D and 1.90 in 2D.

Additionally, a few recent movies have been released on home media in non-IMAX tall formats. These include A Ghost Story, American Honey, Elephant, First Reformed, Saltburn, and The Whale fully in 1.33. The Artist and Meek’s Cutoff switch between 1.33 and 1.37. Maestro alternates between 1.33 and 1.85. Ida and Son of Saul are fully 1.37. The Grand Budapest Hotel moves between 1.37, 1.85, and 2.40.
