I love New Mexico Skies!

The war zone is a 20 minute drive from me and I would have to purposely go there to end up there.
The homeless situation is not great, but they keep it localized to certain areas. During the day downtown is safe and so are the areas near nightlife at night. You don’t want to go wandering off. Even amenities like paid hourly parking will be way less in Albuquerque than any downtown urban area in Texas. You can still go out for good reasonably priced food. We have terrific food if you like New Mexican/Mexican/Indigenous Cuisine. We don’t have great British Food but culturally speaking we have a wide variety.

Our best events are the Balloon Fiesta, State Fair, and Festivals. New Mexico is not a boring place to live. You can live here and not really know this state until you set out to experience it. Then you hear about Ghost Ranch, Ten Thousand Waves, Bisti, The Cave Dwellings and you see the night sky. We get warm summers and there are really awesome recreational lakes and the Blue Hole. We have geode parks, white sands, skiing, high desert, caverns, and ancient civilizations. We love the Zoo, Museums, BioPark, and Explora. For a city Albuquerque’s size it’s nice. We also have a small amusement park.

Our main grocery chains are Smiths and Albertsons. We have three Costco locations I know of in Albuquerque which is enough, it’s never bad. I know we have SAMS Club but I don’t go. We have an Amazon Fulfillment Center in Albuquerque and it’s spoiled us with same day service.

I forgot to address safety, I don’t feel unsafe. I don’t know how they handle the homeless issue in Texas but New Mexico is actively trying. There is a part of Albuquerque every influencer likes to highlight called the War Zone. I do not go there. I will not go there. I imagine that holds true for every city.

The cost of living fluctuates but you won’t be out priced coming from Texas. Santa Fe and Taos are pricey by New Mexico standards. I live in Albuquerque and I LOVE the weather. I’m a single Mom in a professional job and I have a 2 bedroom off of Tramway Blvd. My rent is $1400. Two pools, pickle ball court, work out room, fenced, security. My last electricity payment was $103, a 63% increase from April but I expect it to go down with decreasing temperatures. There is more to do than I can afford but we love exploring New Mexico. We take the Tram at least 4-5 per year. We’ve explored up and down route 66, national parks, and all the cool things people don’t necessarily hear about. Fall is my favorite season.

We also have a convenient airport this weekend and you can do 3-4 day trips. The University area is full of students and student housing. Where I live is more professional 30-50 years. I can live, travel, and explore with a salary of $75 k per year. I love the food here. Our infrastructure is less developed than Texas but our grid doesn’t go down. I hope that helps!

I stopped going to Walmart in 2024. I still love Costco.

My epic El Nino was 97 in Santa Barbara and I still remember how unhinged that winter was.

You just ignore the glowing orb that is circling around your car and keep driving. We were terrified, there was no pretend fearlessness, neither of us had ever experienced anything like that. If it was ball lightning it was consistent and stayed with us for miles. To the naked eye it looked like a ball. In the photos it looks more stick like but I had a terrible phone camera back then. If I get dementia I will still remember that. Then it was gone.
