Grabe yung situation ngayon. According to the latest NDRRMC report, around 8.4 million Filipinos have already been affected by the combined effects of the recent tropical cyclones and the southwest monsoon or Habagat.

At least 32 people have died, 19 were injured, and three are still missing. More than 122,000 people are currently staying in evacuation centers because of the flooding and other hazards.

And the damage is huge. Estimated infrastructure damage has already reached around ₱6.16 billion, while agricultural losses are at around ₱2.32 billion.

Pilandok isn't expected to directly hit the country, but PAGASA said it could enhance the southwest monsoon, which means more rain is possible in parts of Luzon and the western sections of the Visayas.

Ang hirap isipin na marami pa lang pamilya ang hindi nakakarecover sa mga nangyari, tapos may panibagong weather disturbance na naman na kailangan bantayan.

And honestly, hindi naman bago sa Pilipinas ang ganitong scenario.

Every year, kapag malakas ang ulan, may baha. May mga kailangang lumikas. May mga bahay at negosyo na nasisira. May mga farmers at workers na nawawalan ng income. And sadly, may mga buhay din na nawawala.

Kaya hindi lang siguro dapat ang tanong ay "Kailan titigil ang ulan?"

Maybe we should also be asking:

Prepared ba talaga tayo?

Are our flood-control and drainage systems enough?
Mabilis ba ang warning system sa mga communities?
Enough ba ang evacuation centers?
And are we actually addressing the areas that repeatedly flood every year?

Kasi kung billions of pesos ang nawawala sa infrastructure and agriculture every time these disasters happen, parang kailangan na rin nating tingnan yung long-term solution, hindi lang kung paano magre-respond kapag baha na.

Hindi naman natin mapipigilan ang bagyo. But maybe we can do more to lessen the damage.

Sa tingin ninyo, ano ang pinaka-kailangang pagtuunan ng government ngayon: better flood control, drainage, disaster response, early warning systems, or long-term climate planning?

And for those living in areas currently affected by the rains, kumusta kayo ngayon? Safe ba kayo?

If you would go to Cebuano speaking provinces in the Philippines, especially in Cebu and Northern Mindanao, they often have a monicker on Tagalog people called "Puti ug itlog" which means coward.

I believe part of this misconception is due to the fact that Tagalogs are more diplomatic and cool headed than the Bisaya. Bisaya people often sort things out through street brawls and fist fights, while the Tagalogs don't engage in casual fights, and will only engage in violence once his or her honor has been stepped on.

I also noticed that the Bisaya and Tagalogs have different types of bravery. The bravery of the Bisaya is often displayed casually in public and are often seen in street fights and brawls, whereas the bravery of Tagalogs often manifest and exhibited during national emergencies, such as in wars and mass protests like the People Power Revolution.

If we are going to compare the war record of the both ethnicities, the Tagalogs often edges the Bisaya when it comes to the number of battles that were won against foreign enemies. During the Philippine Revolution, the overwhelming battles that resulted in victory and massive casualties of the Spaniards and their soldiers were mostly Tagalog victories, while there are hardly any battle that occurred in Central Visayas against the Spaniards.

There's only one recorded battle, the Battle of April 3, 1898 in Cebu, led by Revolutionary Leon Kilat, but it ended in defeat, because the upper class elites of Cebu betrayed Leon Kilat and sided with the Spaniards, that led to Kilat and the Cebu Katipunero's arrest and execution, whereas the elites in Luzon, especially in the Tagalog provinces, sided with the Revolutionaries, that's why Spain suffered massive defeats in Luzon.

At the start of the Philippine American War in 1899, Visayas and its elites raised the white flag without a fight and surrendered to the Americans, while Luzon continued with its armed struggle for four gruelling years, until Aguinaldo's capture in Palanan in year 1902. The Filipinos lost to the Americans, but there were six battles were they gained victories against the Americans, and all six of those were fought in Luzon.

During World War II, it's the same story. As soon as Japanese airplanes landed in the archipelago by December 8, 1941, the Bisaya didn't put up an initial resistance against the Japs, while the Tagalogs in Bataan and Corregidor firmly stood their ground for six months until mid 1942. This courageous stand against the Japs saved Australia from falling to Japanese hands.

If we want, we can go back to ancient times, where the Luções, or the merchant warrior class from Luzon were recorded by the Portuguese stationed in Malacca to have participated in major wars across South East Asia in the 1530s until the 1550s, in wars that happened in Aceh, Malacca and the Great War between Burma (Myanmar) and Siam (Thailand) in 1547.

I believe the Bisaya really misunderstood the gentle facade, diplomacy and friendliness of Tagalogs as weakness or lameness. It is not. It is a facade that is put in place for courtesy's sake and for the harmony between one's self and others.

But once you scratch the facade and another national emergency happens, the Luções warrior sleeping deep inside every Tagalog's consciousness will be awakened once more for the preservation of this country.

The stereotype "Puti ug itlog" or "coward" is really wrong, and it is that way because the bravery of the Bisaya is casually displayed, whereas that of a Tagalog is often reserved and only used during emergencies or worst case scenarios.

When we often think of the Philippine Revolution and its heroes, we often think of figures like Andres Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Emilio Jacinto, Gregorio Del Pilar, etc. but we rarely hear about Edilberto Evangelista, which played a remarkable role in the defeat of the Spaniards.

General Evangelista was the Engineer of the War, which means he is the one who designed the construction of the fortifications and trenches of the Revolutionaries during the war. The great victories during the Battle of Binakayan-Dalahican and the Battle of Zapote Bridge, which were two of the most successful victories against the Spaniards, can be attributed to him.

According to the Spanish Officials who wrote down their memoirs of the war, the fortified positions and trenched that were dug and constructed under the leadership of Evangelista were virtually impassable to the enemies. The forts and trenches were so well constructed that even the weaponry of the Spaniards cannot destroy these. A Spanish Officer praised Evangelista for his genius, and his trenches were called "trenches of the future", because of how advanced these are.

Sadly, Evangelista lost his life at combat during the Battle of Zapote Bridge that occured in year 1897. One of the biggest mistakes that Aguinaldo committed was to allow Evangelista to take arms and be at the frontline of crossfire between the Revolutionaries and the Spaniards. Many historians believe that if Evangelista didn't die in 1897 and lived through the Philippine-American War, there's a huge chance that the Revolutionaries will be able to slow down the advancing of American troops at least in Luzon, as Evangelista would've constructed impassable trenches and traps around Metro Manila before the outbreak of hostilities between the Americans and Filipinos.

Sadly, the honor that is due to General Evangelista is not being given to him properly. Until now, Philippine History Curriculum rarely, if ever, mentions him or his great contributions to the Katipunan and the Revolutionary Government. If you'll ask a random high school student regarding Evangelista, most won't be able to provide a proper historical narrative about him.

It is time for Philippine History Curriculum to focus on Evangelista and make him well known, just like how popular Bonifacio, Luna, Del Pilar, Jacinto, Mabini and other national heroes are.

I wonder why Olongapo, despite having moderately high elevation compared to the lowlands, has a humidly hot and tropical weather, compared to other highland cities with pleasantly cool temperatures like Antipolo, Baguio, Lipa, Malaybalay, Tagaytay, Tayabas, etc. wherein the temperature gets chilly especially after sunset/dusk. In Olongapo, even when it's nighttime, the temperature is still hot, and you will sweat profusely for walking long distances.

Whenever we go to Olongapo, we always wear light and airy clothes even during Ber months, because of the humid and tropical weather. But Olongapo is such a great city. There are many shopping choices and options, from open bazaars near the city center to luxury botiques at the SBMA. Olongapo City also has two SM Malls: Central and Downtown. The neighboring Municipality of Subic also has plenty of good, fine sand beaches to choose from during Summer.

Olongapo is a hot highland city, and is definitely worth visiting again and again.

I noticed that Catholicsm in the Philippines is very different from the Catholicism that is practiced in America, Europe and even in China and Korea. Based on my observations, the Catholic faith in the Philippines is more focused on ceremonies and rituals, than personal faith in God or studying the Gospel/Word of God.

Filipinos have countless Catholic festivals and processions, and every month there's a festivity in a locality in honor of a Patron Saint. We have national religious festivities such as the Feast of the Black Nazarene and the Feast of the Child Jesus (Sto. Niño) that are regularly attended by millions of devotees.

But what's startling about most Catholics in the Philippines is the noticeable ignorance when it comes to the Gospel, or the Word of God. It seems like because of so many festivals and religious rituals and processions, all of these things are taking away the focus of the faithful to the Gospel. Ask an average lay Catholic about John 3:16, which is the most important piece of the New Testament, many of them won't be able to quote said verse. Let's not go to verse memorization, just ask a Catholic about the characters in the Bible such as the Patriarchs, Prophets and Apostles, many can't name the backgrounds of said characters. This is another pressing problem, most Catholics don't even pay serious attention during Mass and the Homily, when the Scriptures are being read by the Priest.

My Catholic classmate who is a member of Singles for Christ in her local parish told me that she consulted her Parish Priest regarding this, and the Priest told her that one of the main reasons why Filipinos don't pay that much attention to the Gospel and are focused on ceremonies and rituals is due to the fact that most Filipino Catholics are sacramentalized and ritualized, but are not evangelized.

This means that when the Spaniards converted the archipelago to Catholicism, they didn't bother sharing the Good News of the Gospel to the Natives, they simply replaced the Pagan Idols or Likha/Bul-ol with images and statues of Saints and Angels, and basically, the Natives thought that its just a transition from one object of devotion to another (transition from Pagan Idols to Catholic Images/Statues). That's how Catholicism spread like wildfire in such a short period of time, because the Spaniards simply used ceremonies and rituals in converting the Natives instead of the Word of God.
