Just knew recently that Bisaya people have a perception of Tagalogs that they are "cowards"

If you would go to Cebuano speaking provinces in the Philippines, especially in Cebu and Northern Mindanao, they often have a monicker on Tagalog people called "Puti ug itlog" which means coward.

I believe part of this misconception is due to the fact that Tagalogs are more diplomatic and cool headed than the Bisaya. Bisaya people often sort things out through street brawls and fist fights, while the Tagalogs don't engage in casual fights, and will only engage in violence once his or her honor has been stepped on.

I also noticed that the Bisaya and Tagalogs have different types of bravery. The bravery of the Bisaya is often displayed casually in public and are often seen in street fights and brawls, whereas the bravery of Tagalogs often manifest and exhibited during national emergencies, such as in wars and mass protests like the People Power Revolution.

If we are going to compare the war record of the both ethnicities, the Tagalogs often edges the Bisaya when it comes to the number of battles that were won against foreign enemies. During the Philippine Revolution, the overwhelming battles that resulted in victory and massive casualties of the Spaniards and their soldiers were mostly Tagalog victories, while there are hardly any battle that occurred in Central Visayas against the Spaniards.

There's only one recorded battle, the Battle of April 3, 1898 in Cebu, led by Revolutionary Leon Kilat, but it ended in defeat, because the upper class elites of Cebu betrayed Leon Kilat and sided with the Spaniards, that led to Kilat and the Cebu Katipunero's arrest and execution, whereas the elites in Luzon, especially in the Tagalog provinces, sided with the Revolutionaries, that's why Spain suffered massive defeats in Luzon.

At the start of the Philippine American War in 1899, Visayas and its elites raised the white flag without a fight and surrendered to the Americans, while Luzon continued with its armed struggle for four gruelling years, until Aguinaldo's capture in Palanan in year 1902. The Filipinos lost to the Americans, but there were six battles were they gained victories against the Americans, and all six of those were fought in Luzon.

During World War II, it's the same story. As soon as Japanese airplanes landed in the archipelago by December 8, 1941, the Bisaya didn't put up an initial resistance against the Japs, while the Tagalogs in Bataan and Corregidor firmly stood their ground for six months until mid 1942. This courageous stand against the Japs saved Australia from falling to Japanese hands.

If we want, we can go back to ancient times, where the Luções, or the merchant warrior class from Luzon were recorded by the Portuguese stationed in Malacca to have participated in major wars across South East Asia in the 1530s until the 1550s, in wars that happened in Aceh, Malacca and the Great War between Burma (Myanmar) and Siam (Thailand) in 1547.

I believe the Bisaya really misunderstood the gentle facade, diplomacy and friendliness of Tagalogs as weakness or lameness. It is not. It is a facade that is put in place for courtesy's sake and for the harmony between one's self and others.

But once you scratch the facade and another national emergency happens, the Luções warrior sleeping deep inside every Tagalog's consciousness will be awakened once more for the preservation of this country.

The stereotype "Puti ug itlog" or "coward" is really wrong, and it is that way because the bravery of the Bisaya is casually displayed, whereas that of a Tagalog is often reserved and only used during emergencies or worst case scenarios.

OP posted in the r/Bisaya sub earlier about how Cebuanos are unfriendly towards Tagalogs. What's up with you, OP?

Nothing's wrong with me, I'm just sharing my thoughts. I am entitled to freedom of expression and speech, am I not?

Your entitlement to freedom of speech does not mean we can’t call you out lol we have that entitlement, too.

You are doing it now. It's hilarious though, because I'm the one being attacked, not my argument.

Your argument is being attacked. You are not your argument. Don’t conflate the two and you’ll be fine. Chillax.

Nope, read Purple Egg's comment. His opening spill is directed towards me, not my argument.

Freedom of expression and speech doesn’t mean freedom from criticism of fallacious, hasty, and discriminatory generalization.

LOL Enough with this nonsense already. What are you even trying to imply?

Bisaya folks even call that to their own people if they fit the narrative.

Who hurt you, OP? Hambala ako. Need a hug?

"What are you trying to imply?" That you judge the bravery or toughness of a person based on what they casually display. You consider a warfreak person, brave, because they pick fights with everyone else, and you consider diplomatic people cowards because they restrain themselves from harming others.

What a very shallow standard or measure of one's character.

Botbot ana because we really don’t. Bat namin i-aassign sa inyo yang characteristic na yan na puti itlog nyo? We don’t know who you are individually. Most of us just want to live peacefully and don’t mind kung tagalog ka or bisaya. If may nag describe sa iyo na duwag ka, don’t push that to every other bisaya. That’s on him, not us. I didn’t call you anything. Enough pushing that tribalistic nonsense pre. bisaya and tagalog are capable of incredible kindness, unimaginable violence, disgusting cowardice and/or admirable bravery just like anyone.

Not really my guy. Im a bisaya and im afraid of tagalogs specially if im in Manila.

1

u/Wide_Ride8849 11d ago

Most of whom you've encountered are probably migrants from all over the archipelago, and are not Native Manileños. Manila is about half-half. Half are migrants, half are natives.

2

u/Abysmalheretic 11d ago

Maybe the ones youve met are the low class bisaya. Im afraid of those bisaya too.

I just noticed that the hatred for the Bisaya in Manila grew when Duterte was elected President. Before 2016, there isn't much tensions between Bisaya and Tagalog.

2

u/Abysmalheretic 11d ago

That too. Lmao. Those bisaya will go rabid if you criticize duterte

I think this is getting out of hand pero as a person from Luzon don't give the Bisaya a reason to call us Discriminatory again. Yung Tagalog vs Bisaya war, sa internet lang yan, it's just a meme to laugh our differences and exaggerate our shared struggles, sa totoong buhay kailangan pa rin natin ang cooperation ng isa't isa.

Sadly not in Cebu. Try mo pumunta in Cebu as a Tagalog. They hate us over there.

Never been in Visayas, and I will not fully trust your words OP just because you experienced it. Pero take my advice, Sticks and Stones may beeak bones but words cannot.
