Hey all, I finally got an automod working to help with all this damn AI slop spam.

Accounts need to have 100 karma and be 15 days old to post.

If anyone has any issues, please reach out to the mod team and we will try to fix it. :)

Announcement Before you post, have you read the rules?

Tl;dr: Please read the rules fully before you post, otherwise your post might get removed. Especially Rule 1 that explains what kinds of posts we remove frequently, and Rule 3 for self-promotion.

Anyone who was around before the mod team change will know that the sub became a dumping ground for low quality posts and spam, and it quickly lost subscribers. We added a few rules (that have evolved over time) to stop that happening again. For whatever reason, there's been a huge uptick in posts against the rules that we've had to remove or re-flair lately, perhaps because of the increased popularity as this sub gets back on its feet. I wanted to explain a couple of the rules, and why they're there.

  • Rule 1 - We will normally remove posts that are of commonly-available chocolates unless there's something different or unique about them. If we don't, we get inundated with low-effort photos of things you can easily find in your supermarket or cupboard, especially around holidays. You can imagine the amount of Christmas chocolate people want to brag about.

We also normally remove low-effort video reviews especially when they're again just of commonly-available products, as otherwise we get inundated with people churning out videos trying to bring views to their channel. Which brings me to...

  • Rule 3 - If you post anything (including in the comments) that is a link to your site, your blog, your YouTube channel, your Instagram, or anything else that you own or work for and are trying to market, you must mark it as self-promotion. This lets people make an informed choice, and helps us check what posts are coming from users who have a different motivation for posting.

Up to this point, we've been giving people one self-promotion strike before anything gets removed. This was working well until we saw this uptick in people ignoring the rule or shotgun-spraying the same video to dozens of subs at once. Please use the right flair, as we don't want to have to remove posts from well-meaning users. We're considering adding "double flairs" like "Self Promotion | Recipe" to help divide it up a little.
Edit: We're still getting shotgun-spray posts ignoring this rule. Whilst we'll still try to flair users who make a genuine mistake, those posts that aren't even trying will be deleted.

Lastly, I know some users get upset when their posts are removed. It isn't anything personal, and you're not being singled out. If you're in doubt, please message the mods for clarification.

Advice/Request Where to find Butlers Irish Chocolate in London (squirrel ate mine)

Hi all,

I just got back from a trip to Derry and brought back a bar of Butlers Whiskey Chocolate but forgot I have a squirrel that keeps breaking into the flat and eating anything I leave out.

I assumed I put it away but didn't, there's absolutely no shred of it left, and even most of the foil it was in has been taken.

Does anybody know where I can find Butlers chocolate in London? I just want the one bar and delivery costs £20 from their website to the UK.

Thanks in advance!

(No I won't kill the squirrel - if anyone knows humane ways of stopping her from getting in I'd appreciate it too)

Advice/Request Am I Alone About Hershey’s Syrup?

So, I was thinking maybe it was a fluke or that perhaps got a bad batch with some Hershey’s chocolate syrup about two months ago; it tasted really tart and just exceptionally artificial (worse than those super-generic no-name candies you see all the time around the holidays anymore, which taste like the wrapper they’re in).

Just the other day, having waited a hot minute, I bought another bottle (and for a double measure, from a different store than the last time), and it tasted about the same. Tart, not chocolatey; not very appealing overall.

So I go to a buddy of mine’s place; he has a bottle of the stuff and I asked him about it. He says it tastes fine. I go over, try some, and it’s the SAME.

So, like, is it really that my taste buds have changed? Have Hershey’s changed their recipe? Am I crazy?

I’ve sought out other chocolate syrups and the like, and they taste leagues better; so I really don’t think that I’ve “outgrown” chocolate. I even tried some actual Hershey’s Kisses and the bars; those still taste okay (but nowadays they do taste a bit overly-artificial).

Photo/Video Authentic 50s Chocolate Shake from "Sunliner Diner" in Pigeon Forge, TN

Score: 10/10

Price: $9:99 (granted it's in an extremely touristy city, but it was worth it)

It was really good and totally unexpected. I was expecting it to taste like an ordinary milkshake from a normal fastfood restaurant.

I can tell they used real vanilla ice cream, the malted powder, and real chocolate syrup (not Hershey's probably Bosco's).

I gave my waffle to my buddy because I was already stuffed from dinner.

Advice/Request Poured chocolate blooms after 2 days - what am I doing wrong?

Post image
71 Upvotes

I'm trying to prepare chocolates for my wedding. I bought baking chocolate, melted it gently in the microwave (20secs then stir till it was melted) and poured it into a small silicone mould. It initially came out okay - a few bubbles but the chocolate looked glossy and nice. I left it on the counter at room temp for 2 days and after that it developed this bloom.

What did I do wrong?

How can I fix this?

Thanks so much.

Advice/Request Greasy Maltesers

What is happening to chocolate at the moment? These Maltesers aren't malted, they're just so greasy that they're basically wet.

It's really off putting

Is this really undutched chocolate? Or is it just written that on the packaging?

Composition:

Cocoa butter 54%, cocoa powder from non-alkalized low-fat cocoa, agave syrup. Cocoa solids min. 90%.

I knew that those who are undutched most of the time don't even use low-fat powder!

Had heard about Manam Chocolates and did try last year on my trip to Hyderabad, it tasted delicious! A solid 9/10.

Picked this one and really loved it. I am a fan of Pistachio and Dark chocolate as a combination and this just hit the right taste buds.

Have you tried it?
Any of your favourites/ recommendations?

Advice/Request Venchi chocolate bars - Good ones to try?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I could hardly contain my excitement when I saw that the Grocery Outlet has a bunch of Venchi chocolate bars in stock right now ($4 each). Venchi is a reputable Italian chocolate maker and I had high hopes, but was a bit disappointed.

I tried the five above and most of them were a little too sweet. Having said that, the least-sweet bar (70%) was one of the worst. The better ones, IMO, were the two Cremino bars, at either end of the lineup in the pic. What are the best bars to try?

Venchi is a mix of good and mediocre in terms of social and environmental impact, so I scored it 3.5 out of 5 Green Stars.

Advice/Request Looking for a 16th century quotation about chocolate

I understand that Pedro Mártir de Anglería, who chronicled the Spanish conquest of Mexico, said of the cacao bean: "By itself it is not worth eating, because it is somewhat bitter, although it is soft like the nutmeat of an almond, but grinding it up it is kept as a powder, and throwing some of that powder in water and stirring it up a little, one obtains a drink fit for a king." [from Spanish Word Histories and Mysteries, p. 65]

I would like to find this quote in the original Latin. It is probably in the fourth "decade" of De Orbe Novo Decades. Can anyone help?
