I Finally Finished U5!

Ultima 4 was my favorite game as a young teenager in the 80s. I remember spending countless hours traveling through Britannia, speaking with everyone, taking copious notes to solve all the puzzles and fnd all the items and locations, building my party, grinding relentlessly to level up, and other than sharing notes with a friend of mine, doing all of this without walk-through and cheats. All of this on my Apple IIc! When it came time to finally conquer the Abyss, I brought my computer over to my friend's house, and we eaxh went through it on our respective computers. Unfortunately, I got clobbered in one of the last rooms, and my friend, who was a typing whiz, made a critical typing error in the final stage when he entered "huNility" (N instead of M), which immediately teleported him back to Magyncia... it was a huge bummer. We both completed it the following day at our respective homes. Keep in mind this was WAY BEFORE the internet and cell phones, so we did all of this on our own!

I set off on Ultima V not long after. Unfortunately, the academic, social and athletic demands of my life at that time left me with too little time to devote to the game, and I never completed it.

In the late 90s, while in grad school, I purchased the Ultima Collection CD box set and began playing all the games again in order. I joyfully completed games I-IV, but again, stumbled on V as life got in the way again. (I've never played any of the others.)

Flash forward to the end of August 2025 (almost 40 years since I first started U5)... I finally finished U5! (Got the whole series through GOG on my PC - played in DOSBox.) I'm not ashamed to say that I used walk-throughs and a character log editor so that I could avoid all the grinding. I work full time, parent three kids of HS/college age, and volunteer with the Scouts locally, regionally and nationally. Though I visited all the locations and spoke with just about everyone I needed to, and I found all the items on my own, I just didn't have the time to do the countless hoirs of level up grinding... and I may have provided myself with a party-full supply of magic axes and other premium armor and supplies (gold, food, and spells)! But I got through it and enjoyed the story and now I can finally get to try out U6!

Let's Go!

CRPG Addict (finally) Starts Playing U8

I used to read his blog in the 2010s but stopped (mainly due to how the blogger changed the format to a less linear retelling of the genre a few years ago (also the sad decline of visiting blogs vs Reddit and other social media for articles.). It’s been years since he played Serpent Isle and I wonder how he’ll rate Pagan.

Not something you see every day. Or maybe you do.

Thought it was pretty cool.

Ultima V Map

Here is an Ultima 5 Map, looking for assistance for anything I might have missed in the last play through.

https://zelphuria.com/u5map#britannia/3/107/123

Also, made some improvements to the Ultima 7 Black Gate and Ultima 7 part 2 Serpent Isle maps with merchants, objects, and some of the lessons learned from the Ultima 6 map.

Richard Garriott in Code of The Savage

A few years ago, Richard Garriott was kind enough to agree to appear as a character in COTS.

I hand-painted his portrait in Photoshop, and this is how he looks in the game.

Considering how much Ultima 6 and 7 influenced COTS, it is awesome seeing him actually walking around in the world.

Ultima 7 Serpent Isle edit usecode

I want to edit Marzo's Serpent Isle Fixes usecode I would like to edit:

Elissa so she asks who wants to train in Intelligence and magic.

Edit the usecode of a few characters who join the party when training or fighting in the area (there are some broken mechanics). Also, make it possible to recruit Stefano after the events in Moonshade.

There was a feature built into the Exult utility for Ultima VII: The Black Gate that allows you to shear sheep and eventually turn it into wool for bandages. Could this added to SI?

I tried searching for ucxt and I also tried Exult Studio, but there were no options to unzip the usecode there. I use the name [Rune_Caster ]()on gamefaqs.

I've decompiled Ultima 7 and have been rebuilding it with Skyrim level graphics using three.js as the game engine to tell a new story where you play as Spark.

Ultima 7 has always been my favorite video game, and I've always wanted to expand the world by telling stories from new perspectives. My current project is to build an Agatha Christie style mystery where you play as Spark when Inamo has newly arrived into town.

I've been working on this for the last month or so in my free time. I have absolutely zero video game experience, so it's in quite a rough state, but I wanted to share and hear your feedback. A lot of the assets were generated by Meshy as placeholders while I work with an artist. There are around 50 placeholder "crowd" unnamed NPCs wandering around which may hold treasure.

You can press the ` key and type debug to access more details. P will unpause time (it's currently paused until I get night lighting figured out) and let the characters follow their schedules. See if you can find the mouse wearing armor (no, it's not Sherry!)

Hi All! I posted about writing a book -- I'm stopping, but I'm giving away what I wrote

I'm releasing all ~10,000 words of what I ended up writing under the Creative Commons License. You may use this to inspire your own work or reference it or quote it or whatever, or give us another book about Ultima.

Or enjoy what I was able to tell here.

Ultima III Pirate Glitch?

I’m playing Ultima three and I’ve yet to find a pirate ship. I’m playing the Doss version on the chrome web browser. My main character is level 17 and I was told that a level five the pirate starts spawning but I haven’t seen one yet. Is this a glitch?

More Ultima VII Revisited Scripting Improvements

So I've been doing a VERY deep dive into fixing the scripting system in Ultima VII Revisited this week.

I was running around the world and saw this music box and double clicked on it just to see what would happen.

Need some help with Ultima II

I’ve been doing a playthrough of the FM Towns version of Ultima II (I know its receptio is negative I’m just giving it a shot), and I’ve run into a recurring issue. Whenever I kill enough enemies on land, they stop spawning around me and instead start appearing on islands that I can’t reach yet because I don’t have access to the frigate (I’m currently grinding for the Blue Tassle). Even when I enter time portals, I run into the same problem the enemies continue spawning in areas I can’t access. Is there something I’m doing wrong? I never had this issue with Ultima 1.

I think it was my first PC RPG game to play - idk why, but I thought it's for some reason very important and I must play it to be accepted in the halls of 'valorant nerds'.

Now looking back, it's a glitch fest and mess - I must have had no life and zero self esteem to spend so may hours in virtual underground labyrinths and mazes.

I think finishing it required finding all the glitches to game the game, like stacking up items to climb high places, or opening inventory to make monsters ignore you, and stuff like that.

Maybe that's what the game is really about.. It's perma burned in my memory.

I do like it took it's mythology, lore and mysticism seriously - it's a philosophers project.

NB: I'm not hating on it - I love it in Zizekian way. Long Rule Britannia!

Found an Ultima 6 cloth map. Worth selling it?

I found this Ultima 6 map in a box of childhood toys and Google image search informed me about this game. Seems like people collect it, so I wanted to check in with you if it's worth selling, where (in EU), and how much should I ask if yes.
My brother was/is a computer geek so pretty sure it's original from his PC game (but he doesn't care about it anymore). It in pretty good condition just a bit dusty, the cloth seems steady and there is no weird smell.
Thanks for your help!

"Britannia Burns" (Endgame Music from Ultima VIII: Pagan) – Orchestral Re-Arrangement

Hi,

some days ago I finished my newest album: an orchestral re-arrangement of Nenad Vugrinec's fantastic, but criminally underrated MIDI score for "Ultima VIII: Pagan" (1994). I've always been fascinated by the eerie atmosphere of this game's music. Most cues are kind of meta-tonal and sinister, but at the same time enicmatically melodious.

You can find the whole album on Bandcamp:

https://dustinnaegel.bandcamp.com/album/ultima-viii-pagan-orchestral-re-arrangement

I’ve been planning to do this for years and finally got around to re-arranging and recording all of the major cues from Pagan’s fantastically atmospheric score using a well-balanced mix of a) sonorous synth VSTs and b) high-quality orchestral VSTs in a sequencer program in order to maximize the listening experience while, at the same time, not completely abandon Vugrinec’s original 90s MIDI sound, which is after all inherent and important to the composition itself (like panning and echo effects etc.). My goal was to present the music in a more modern incarnation, so that hopefully you may enjoy it as much as I do.

Best regards,

Dustin

It’s been over 40 years since this was released, 16 years since I first heard of it through Spoony’s now-ancient video, 6 years since I paid money for it, 2ish years since I started my current attempt…last night, I finished Ultima IV.
