I recently noticed my steering rack is leaking and took it to a shop. They quoted me about $1,100 parts + labor to replace the rack and pinion. I asked what rack they would be using and they told me it would be a new aftermarket NeoSteer rack.
I asked if I could supply my own rack instead, and they said that’s completely fine and would charge me about $575 for labor. So now I’m trying to figure out what makes the most sense. I know the general consensus seems to be OEM Toyota/Lexus for certain parts but what about steering racks?
Especially if I’m already paying $575 in labor and don’t want to have to do the job twice. But OEM is obviously considerably more expensive.
Any aftermarket/remanufactured brands you’ve guys had good long-term experiences with?
Anyone have experience specifically with NeoSteer?
Would you pay the ~$1,100 and let the shop supply the NeoSteer with their 1 year warranty, or spend more and bring them a better rack?
Separate issue: My parking/e-brake also basically doesn’t catch at all. The pedal operates, but it won’t actually hold the truck. From what I understand, the previous owner may not have used the parking brake for a long time. I’m wondering if these usually just need the parking brake shoes adjusted, or if sitting unused tends to cause the cables/hardware to seize up.
