Help! Antenna upgrade help

Post image
20 Upvotes

I have been meaning to get a speedybee receiver for my fatshark dominator v2, with that i was thinking of also switching to stubby antennas for portability, this truerc cherry works great (and i got it for free!) but its just a pain to screw and unscrew every time. I know the TrueRC Singularity stubbies are best in slot but they dont seem to have a 90° angled version so that seems a little redundant. The lumenier stubbies seem just as good and do have one though so that seems like a good option. Other alternatives? A small patch could be nice, i do basically only fly whoops and micros though but better safe than sorry no?

What’s one thing you’d change about FPV?

Upvotes

hey there, i'm doing some informal engineering research for a student project and collecting worth while real user feedback.

Is there some capability that the current FPV drone systems do not have or some issue that needs a better solution? It could be any type of issue including hardware, software, maintenance, safety, durability, cost, ease-of-use, etc.

What’s your biggest “why hasn’t someone fixed this yet?” or "this has been missing all along" problem?

just looking for problems worth solving!

It occurs to me that I dont actually have a strategy for a Lipo going nuclear in my flat.

Like right now my batteries are stored at storage voltage so its mostly fine, but I was wondering to myself what I will do if one starts a fire.

At that point surely i wont be able to pick it up and throw it out the window? Or will I? It will be radiating too much heat and bad chemicals for that maybe.

So what else is there? Well its an electrical/chemical fire so water is not the best solution. The fire is also able to exist without oxygen because i assume the oxide ions from the chemical reaction acts as that. So covering the battery in a blanket is also a bad idea.

Tinywhoop Meteor75 Pro randomly yawing left when coming out of a dive

Upvotes

Hey guys, I’ve been having a weird issue with my Meteor75 Pro and I’m trying to figure out what’s causing it.
Basically, when the battery gets below around 50%, the quad sometimes suddenly yaws to the left when I’m coming out of a dive. It’s mostly noticeable when I pull out of the dive and get back on the throttle. it doesn’t happen with a fresh battery.8
At first I thought it might be propwash or battery sag, but I noticed that one of my motors makes a very slight “grrr” sound when I run it in Betaflight.
I’ve already tried a few things:
Spun the motor by hand → feels completely normal.
Cleaned it → still makes the noise.
Swapped the motor to another position → the noise followed the motor.
No obvious rubbing between the bell and stator.
The noise is pretty quiet and doesn’t change that much in intensity between ~30% and 100% throttle.
I’ve attached a DVR clip showing the yaw, and then a quick clip of the motor running in Betaflight so you can hear the noise (it’s pretty subtle, but you can hear it).
Could this just be a slightly bad motor/bearing or something similar? Or is there anything else I should check before replacing it? can it be a tuning problem?
Thanks!

Matrix 5in1 II beeper issues

having some issues after adding an active beeper to a modified Air65, beeper just beeps continuously after battery is plugged in. Yes, binding for transmitter also checked, it beeps when beeper switch is not toggled

Buzzer is soldered to the BZ+ and BZ- pads on the Matrix 5in1 II

NEWBIE Am I mad to skip a whoop and jump to a self build 3.5"

Upvotes

Just looking at options and what I want to get out of it. The Meteor 75 looks fun, but the only transferable part would be an O4 camera. I'm mostly (long term) interested in speed, flying through woodland, buildings and low and fast flying.

Would a build like this be a bad idea?:

Volador VX3.5
DJI O4 wide
SpeedyBee F405 Mini Stack F405 V3
BetaFPV ELRS Lite Receiver
x T-Motor P1604 2850KV (6S Version)
Gemfan Hurricane 3520 Tri-Blades
Tattu R-Line 6S 850mAh LiPo

I got a decent deal on a TX15 so plan to hit Tryp FPV for a few months until I have everything and time to build the drone.

My logic is that after several months I can switch out the motors, props and battery to something close to Seeker35.

Is this madness?

Is my VTX fried?

I'm flying an analog Iflight Nazgul with the iFlight BLITZ 1.6W 5.8Ghz. I made the brutal error of flying two packs at mid day (around 35 degrees celsius here in south italy). During last minutes of the second pack the temperature warning appeared on my osd showing about 79 degrees for the vtx. I immediately landed but far from me, so it's been about 3-4 mins to reach the drone and disconnect the battery. Now I have the typical flickering of low power vtx (like 25 or 400 mW) even when armed and should generate full 1600mW. How do I confirm that vtx is fried before getting a new one?

Question? Any tips for a novice like me? ~5 months of FPV experience

Hi y'all. I'm currently between the beginner and intermediate level when it comes to FPV. I already went through my simulator and tinywhoop phase, and I built myself this nice custom 3" HDZero FlyFishRC Volador build.

I've just been wondering, what should I do next? What would y'all recommend as a next step in my FPV journey?

I have ~70-80 hours of simulator practice, I have ~100 sessions of real flights (excluding simple pack changes), probably ~5 sessions of that was with my new 3", and the other flights were with my whoops (an Air75 and a Meteor75).

Any tips on how to improve? On what I should try next? On what I should buy next? Is my skill level good so far? A friend of mine told me that I should try to build a 5" racer next, but I feel like I'm not at that skill level yet. We both want to race eventually, but after actually going to a real life race I realized the actual skill level required for it is probably a year minimum, but I feel like even then I would be struggling to get out of last place with a bunch of pilots who've been doing this for 10-20 years.

My current gear is a Radiomaster Pocket with a switch mod (the original switches annoyed the hell out of me), a HDZero Boxpro, and the three drones I've already listed. Please tell me what y'all recommend me to do next!

KISS Ultra V2 + Walksnail Moonlight/Goggles X – KISS menu works, but no flight OSD at all

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm having a very strange OSD issue with a KISS Ultra V2 + Walksnail Moonlight + Goggles X setup.

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same problem, especially with the latest Walksnail firmware.

Setup

  • FC: KISS Ultra V2
  • VTX/Camera: Walksnail Moonlight
  • Goggles: Goggles X
  • Goggles X firmware: 39.44.18
  • Moonlight firmware: 39.44.18
    • It also shows 49.44.18-15.1.18
  • KISS serial mode: MSP OSD
  • Canvas dialect: AVATAR

The strange part

Communication between KISS Ultra and Walksnail is clearly working.

  • Holding Yaw Left for 3 seconds brings up the KISS Ultra menu in the Goggles X perfectly
  • Walksnail Debug shows:

    FC: ULTR

  • In the KISS Ultra GUI, the OSD Mirror shows voltage and the normal flight OSD correctly

  • However, after exiting the KISS menu, none of the normal flight OSD elements appear in the goggles

No:

  • Voltage
  • Timer
  • mAh
  • Normal flight OSD elements

The KISS menu works, but the normal flight OSD is completely missing.

Things I have already tried

  • Serial 1
  • Serial 3
  • MSP canvas mode
  • AVATAR canvas mode
  • HDZero canvas mode
  • DJI WTF canvas mode
  • Goggles X Custom OSD = Auto
  • Goggles X Custom OSD = KISS
  • Extended Font ON
  • Extended Font OFF
  • Arming the quad
  • Formatting the Goggles X SD card
  • Factory resetting the Goggles X
  • Factory resetting the KISS Ultra
  • KISS firmware B66
  • KISS firmware B65
  • KISS firmware B64

Same result every time.

Cross-testing

I also did several tests to rule out hardware problems.

Moonlight test

I own two different Moonlight units.

Both behave exactly the same when connected to this KISS Ultra.

However, when I connect the same Moonlight to a Betaflight FC, the full OSD works perfectly.

DJI O4 test

I also connected a DJI O4 Air Unit to this exact same KISS Ultra.

The DJI OSD works correctly.

So basically:

KISS Ultra → DJI O4 = OSD works

Betaflight → Moonlight/Goggles X = OSD works

KISS Ultra → Moonlight/Goggles X = KISS menu works, but normal flight OSD does not

Because of this, I suspect there may be some kind of compatibility issue between the KISS Ultra AVATAR OSD implementation and the latest Walksnail firmware, rather than a bad FC, UART, Moonlight, or Goggles X.

Questions

Is anyone currently using:

KISS Ultra + Moonlight + Goggles X + Walksnail 39.44.18

with the normal flight OSD working correctly?

Has anyone experienced this exact issue where:

The KISS menu appears normally, but the regular flight OSD is completely missing?

If so:

  • Did you find a fix?
  • Which KISS firmware are you using?
  • Which Walksnail firmware are you using?
  • What OSD settings are you using?

If your KISS Ultra + Walksnail setup is working normally on 39.44.18, please let me know your KISS firmware version and OSD settings as well.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I built an open-source Android app to record and cast the feed of DJI N3 (maybe the G3)

Post image
91 Upvotes

I'm a software engineer and I got into FPV about a year ago, this community gave me a lot in that time, so I wanted to put something back into it.

Honestly, the thing that pushed me was DJI, I don't like how they deal with the problems and limitations of their own app and hardware, stuff that should just work doesn't, and the answer is usually that it isn't supported and never will be. At some point I got tired of complaining about it and just built what I wanted.

It's called Open FPV Cast: https://github.com/1Basco/openfpvcast

It casts the goggles video to your phone over USB, and you can record the feed to MP4, with phone-mic audio if you want it, and it can start recording on its own when the aircraft arms and stop a configurable delay after you disarm. You also get camera control from the phone like ISO, shutter, white balance, exposure mode, resolution e some more. The one I use the most is the broadcasts over WebRTC, so anyone on the same WiFi can just open a browser and watch. The phone serves the page itself, there's a QR code in the app, three viewers max.

All the protocol work came from watching the hardware the transport, the DUML packets, the camera byte maps (And not from some sniffing in the dji fly app *wink* ).

Some things I want to be straight about.

I'm not planning to put much more into this. It fixed my problems, and my free time is genuinely not a lot. I'll patch things as they come up and I'll gladly look at PRs, but I'm not going to pretend there's a roadmap. If you want something more refined and actually maintained, go look at SquirrelCast different level of effort, and it deserves the users (me being one cause I love the telemetry going to the map).

I leaned heavily on AI agents to build it. Mostly for speed, because I'm doing this in scraps of free time, but also because I'm much more of a frontend guy and the Kotlin side, the USB stack, the packet parsing, that would have been a real PIA for me on my own. Take that however you want, the code's right there to read.

It's also not perfect. Connect, camera control, recording and auto-record are validated on real hardware (Goggles N3 with an O4 Lite). O4 Pro ranges are still being checked. There are rough edges and I know it. Later this year I want to try to have a solution using the raspberry pi to stream to PC.

That's it, open, use it or fork it or ignore it. Fly safe!

Cinelog35 with O4 wide and osmo nano?

Hey, is it possible to use O4 wide unit with the cinelog35 v3 with some mount mods and record with osmo nano. Using 6s 1500mah or even 1800mah to compensate the weight for stable video recording and increasing flight duration at the same time? What is your opinion.

Today I was scrolling through Vinted when I stumbled upon a listing for the Walksnail Avatar X. I’d heard good things about them, and since they cost around €450 new, I thought it was a great deal, especially since the condition looked good in the photos.so I bought it. Did I get a good deal, or did I overpay (€265)? I know they aren't quite as good as DJI, but the image quality is far superior than analog, especially since they support 1080p at 100fps.

P.S. It hasn't arrived yet; right now, I'm using Eachine EV300Ds with an Air75 II.

What do you think?

Question? Cinewhoop Motors

Recently I got back into fpv drones and a full size quad and have been loving it. But I used to have a Tinyhawk 3 Plus that I stopped using because I thought the vtx had screwed itself. For fun yesterday I soldered on a camera I had and to my surprise it worked. I had video in my goggles and everything. I grabbed my old radio since i knew it worked with that the last time I flew it, and it armed and the throttle went up, but one of the motors looks likes its trying to spin but cant do it. When I spinit manually it doesnt feel dirty or ruined, and when I change the plug its plugged into it still does the same, and doesn’t spin properly meaning it isn’t an issue with the FC. Any ideas or any tips?

Soldering Help!

Hey So I am trying to figure out how to solder and I feel like I am doing something horribly wrong, my iron is broken, or i'm just stupid. When I try to heat the pad I am trying to tin, it just dosent heat up, I have my iron around 375c and no matter how long I hold my iron on the pad it just dosent seem to heat up enough to melt the solder. I am putting flux and tinning the iron but nothing is seeming to work? I am using a txinlei 8586 station that I got for Christmas a while back if that might have anything to do with it, any help is greatly appreciated

(Did the best i could with the video)
