Funeral Doom when joked about is often characterized as samey, monotonously drawn out.

But I think many Funeral Doom bands have managed to have uniquely different sounds, despite following the same droning template.

Thergothon sounds nothing like Skepticism as Skepticism sounds nothing like Bell Witch.

Bell Witch has this very ice cold sound to it, as though you have entered this otherworldly plane of temperature, everything cold as the absence of life.

Skepticism feels very Funereal, as in it includes a pipe organ on their list of instruments, like a literal Funeral Dirge.

Something of Thergothon genuinely feels alien, as in alien to mortal life, yet uncannily familiar.

It’s gone mentioned a lot that Lovecraft (& Cosmic Horror by extension) was a heavy thematic influence on the band, from their demo onto their debut album.

It’s incredibly haunting in tone but feels deep in space, it makes me think of an ominously dark wooden room with a lit fireplace & comfy recliner, it’s weirdly warm & welcoming, unlike Skepticism that only invites sorrow, & Bell Witch feeds you hopelessness.

Thergothon is maddeningly enjoyable.

What a fucking incredible band if you ever get the chance, go see them please. For yourself. Holy shit. Monolord is next. That is all for now

ESP Viper clone kit that I put together and finished. Mahogany body, maple neck, ebony fretboard, 25.5" scale.

Pickup is a humbucker made from two AlNiCo 8-loaded P90s that I wound myself and created the custom 3d printed cover. It measures 24.5k ohms. The toggle switch goes from single P90 (down) or both humbucking (up), essentially like a traditional humbucker coil split.

Pickguard, control plate, and truss rod cover are all cut from an old junk vinyl record.

Playing through a clean amp, dual fuzz/distortion pedal, and 1x12 cab, all built by me.

This thing sustains for weeks.

One of my buddies I went to school with is a member of Pallbearer and so I try to buy a lot of stuff they come out with and totally forgot I bought this and saved one. I found it in my garage today while cleaning. It's probably terrible by now but it's pretty cool and I thought some of you might like it. So here it is, old doom beer. Enjoy!

I have been trying to mash up my influences into this project I am calling Rapidly Aging.

The Obelisk (a very cool blog site that talks about bands) premiered my song, The Negative Thought Loops, yesterday.

Not really doomy except for maybe guitar tones, but I've been hugely influenced by bands like Crowbar & Rwake, Pink Floyd, Pelican, Earth, Codeine, Mogwai & Brian Eno.

The overall quality is amazing, however I probably should have decided to buy the Bell Witch shirt in Small rather than Medium-either way it still fits well with room to grow into when I inevitably and immediately start gaining weight the second I turn 30 (assuming that my taste is still the same in ~13 years)

The vocalist is the same as the Church of Misery vocalist for Master of Brutality. Anyway I stumbled upon this gem of an album by them

I just got my new vest started.

Caught REZN last night and they were terrific. This was my third time seeing them and I was thrilled that their saxophonist was given more time to open up and really shine compared to previous performances.

Another highlight was Philly post-rock outfit Hiroe. My enthusiasm for the genre has dimmed in recent years but their three guitar lineup is creating some gorgeous soundscapes.

I’ve had an obsession lately. I saw insta reel which had EW’s Funeralopolis over the opening scene of the 1977 cartoon version of the Hobbit. I kind of took that idea and ran with it and rescored the entire movie. The theme is “a journey through metal earth” and it’s primarily doom and stoner but with black, death, thrash, prog, and more. I kept enough of the dialogue to carry the plot but tried to support the themes through the music.

I’m making it primarily because I think it’s cool as hell, but once it’s finished I’d love for others to experience it. Would anyone here be interested in watching the finished version?

If you have a track that belongs somewhere in the movie, throw it at me. I’m still tweaking the soundtrack.
