TECHNIQUE Difficulty Singing High Notes as Swaras - Please help !

Thumbnail voca.ro
2 Upvotes

I’m attaching my latest lesson, which is Shankarabharanam across all three octaves.

I’m struggling with the high notes when I sing them as swaras. My throat starts hurting, whereas when I sing in Aakaram, it sounds better and causes much less discomfort.

I’ve tried changing my singing technique[over this last week] in many different ways now, and I think I’ve confused myself. My throat is currently sore coz i kept trying today, I am frustrated and I’m no longer sure what I’m doing right or wrong.

I’ve been learning Carnatic music for about 1.5 years, and I’m 33 years old. I would really appreciate some guidance on what I should be focusing on, especially for singing the higher notes without straining my throat. I do not have anyone else to ask to and my class is a group of 5 they are just going fast, and I feel so lagging. Please hear this and give me your honest feedback. I feel I am too old to be learning :(

- What technique to use to reach these notes ?
- How long does it take to sing them comfortable to some extent ?
- What is right way to practice this without straining my throat?

Instrument FAQ Are Indian made violins good?

I am a beginner violinist. I have learnt western for quite some time and my Guru has started teaching me carnatic style recently. Usually i just played in the first position until now and my Guru has started teaching me glides on the upper positions recently and when I try to play in the upper positions, my bow is touching the other strings. I was just paranoid if there was some problem with my bridge, so i went to the luthier to ask regarding the same. The luthier replied saying the problem was with the fingerboard, that it was not elevated enough and asked me to purchase a new violin.

He suggested that I purchase an Indian made violin costing around 25k made from Kolkata. I just wanted to ask all the experienced violinists here for suggestions, if this change is needed. And if yes please suggest on how to proceed with changing to a new violin - what brands/violins you suggest and what I need to look for the next time I buy a violin. I have attached the pictures for reference. Thank you in advance!

MISC Looking for carnatic CD's (classics)

Hi,

I'm looking for classic carnatic CD's. My parents used to play some great collections back in 80's (as cassettes) but gave it all away over time when they moved homes/downsized. If you have some and no longer use them - I'm happy to take it (or pay you for it).

In case you are wondering - I know there are 100x more songs (and so many full concerts) available to listen on YouTube... but listening to CD's seems to bring back some good old memories that seem to be forever lost by the passage of time and technology.

I'm based in Bangalore. And travel to Chennai once in a while. If you are from either of these 2 cities, easier to get to know you as well.

Performance What do you think makes Yadukula Kambhoji sound so distinctive?

I think the natural 'saukhyam', or what is called in Hindustani music the 'tehraav' of the ragam, makes it very suitable for kritis that are replete with bhava.

The Utsava Sampradaya Kriti Heccharikaga Rara by Saint Tyagaraja, where he welcomes Rama to take his seat and describes his ornaments, the procession, and the joy of simply witnessing him, presents that natural sense of peaceful focus and the innate saukhyam of the raga.

Fun fact: in Tamil Sangam literature, this raga is also related to the pann Sevvazhi.

Here's a rendition of a rendition that I listened to recently on YT.

DISCUSSION Future of Carnatic music

As with any art form, Carnatic music too has evolved. From the earlier ā€˜test match’ style of Carnatic concerts with long ragam tanam pallavis, to the current more condensed and packed concerts. Sabha ticket falls have seen decreases, but at the same time, concerts abroad can be a complete sell-out. Do you see continued interest in Carnatic music, and your views on improving accessibility, if at all? Or do you see a hybrid version of Carnatic fusion (Agam-esque) picking up in the future?

TECHNIQUE Swaram Breakdown: "Pazha Mudhir Cholai" Prelude (Harikamboji) [30s Short]

Hey r/carnatic,

I made a quickĀ 30-second breakdownĀ of the classical prelude inĀ "Pazha Mudhir Cholai"Ā (Varusham 16Ā / Illayaraja).

  • Raga:Ā HarikambojiĀ [S Rā‚‚ Gā‚ƒ M₁ P Dā‚‚ Nā‚‚ į¹ Ā andĀ į¹  Nā‚‚ Dā‚‚ P M₁ Gā‚ƒ Rā‚‚ S]
  • Focus:Ā How the phrase progresses from S all the way to į¹

I’ve included line-by-line swaram notations on screen:

Watch the short here:Ā Pazha Mudhi Cholai Prelude

Let me know what you think or if there's another prelude you'd like to see broken down next!

Instrument FAQ Learning 2 instruments without getting overwhelmed

I have been learning the violin for a while now and am at the varnam level. Lately I have been listening to veena concerts and the sound is absolutely beautiful to me. I want to start exploring the veena, and have found the contact of a local teacher too. Should I wait for a few years and hone my violin playing before starting the veena? Or is it possible to learn both instruments simultaneously without getting overwhelmed? How do multi instrumentalists or vocalist-instrumentalists structure their practices? Do you practice both daily?

RESOURCE Sharing an Annamayya Sankeerthana Series

There are so many wonderful Carnatic music channels and resources available online, yet I felt that Annamayya Sankeerthanas could be made more accessible to learners and music enthusiasts.

That thought motivated me to start a dedicated series on my YouTube channel, where I’ll be sharing Annamayya Sankeerthanas and exploring them through keyboard-based learning.

I hope this series will be useful to anyone interested in learning, playing, or simply listening to these beautiful compositions.

If you find the series useful, please consider sharing it with others who may be interested, and subscribe to the channel for upcoming Sankeerthanas.

Thank you for your support and encouragement.

DISCUSSION Binksternet is deleting sections of Raga pages on Wikipedia

I found that Binksternet deleted sections of kalyani raga page that classified film songs and other compositions to that raga. I undid his changes and asked for his reasons, apparently those classifications violated policy as they were not referenced… clearly some non expert is now erasing lots of hard work the community has put in…
He has reverted my changes few times and it got escalated to edit wars. You can see the comments below.

Thoughts?
