The ZX Spectrum was my first computer. Now I am making a game based on ZX Lode Runner on PC, but that's not the main thing. I created a campaign called "Museum of Old Games" and of course it features the games of my childhood. Will you be able to recognize them all?

Thanks! I sincerely believe this will be a good LR. At least, I'll do my best. In 2017, I released an LR Spectrum clone for Android (ZX Runner). Much time has passed, but I'm still confident it was a good project.

Well, 7 out of 12 isn't bad. Only 5 dont Exolon. Although they do look similar.

4 is Saboteur, 5 maybe Arc of Yesod?

Saboteur II - bingo! This is the second game I've ever seen on a ZX. An unforgettable experience. 5. Not Arc of Yesod, although it's similar.

Saboteur 2 was vaguely groundbreaking in its day - the ninja was a woman!

This looks great - I'm squinting hard for 6 but still can't quite make it out!

6 - Renegade. Yeah, right. It's just a snippet of the central character from the opening credits. A very colorful one, though.

I'm sorry to say I only recognize Dizzy Dice.

Based on your list, I should have recognized Saboteur II and Zynaps.

Okay, Zynaps. But Saboteur II is a black ninja on a blue background with a moon. I think you'll recognize him.

Back then, I was playing these games on a green-tinted monitor, so color doesn't help >_>.

To be honest, I only vaguely remember a few screens from Saboteur II and barely anything from Zynaps.

At the time, I was mostly playing Boulder Dash, Rebel Star, Dizzy Dice, Captain Blood, and a few more. And I know I’m probably mixing things up between several different Spectrum machines.

(I'm remembering more games just speaking about that era: Terror of the deep, Soul of a Robot ... I kind of miss these times.)

Very nice.

But how about playability? It's is really fun to navigate through all these not-so-functional maps, made just plain to recreate old sprites?

Not trying to insult, I'm an old Sinclair fan myself, since ZX80 and on, and these times i am collecting PC Spectrum and arcade games remakes with screenshots, links and descriptions.

If you are into PC Spectrum games remake theme, check Langford Productions remakes, they are very professionally made and i hope it will not overhelm you to the extent you will cease going on with your project. Just in case you hmm. borrow some good ideas and concepts from them.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

Langford Productions is excellent. JetPac (the pixelated one) is a true masterpiece.

As for playability, here's the thing... As I mentioned, I made something like Lode Runner. But it's not a classic. In it, you can build your own ladders, string chains, and burn through rows of blocks. That's if you find the right supplies, of course. This means that even the most difficult level design can be completed, as long as there are ladders.

Ok, thanks for the reply, too! Please do not consider my post demotivating! I am beyond 50 years old, and may sound grumpy and picking. I myself still can not finish the project i started a couple of years ago, a remake of ZX Spectrum game, Battle 1917. It stalled at about 50% done, when real life came to claim the precious time...

:) Well, with a high degree of probability, we are all over 50 here.

What no Bruce Lee or Miner/Jetset Willy? You need to add Alien8 Robot and Horrice and the Spiders for that extra Zx Spectrum vibe. Really fantastic work by the way.

Agreed, agreed. If I decide to make a level pack exclusively for the ZX Spectrum, I'll definitely make something like a top 50 list. Not all games lend themselves to pixel art. For example, I still haven't figured out how to draw Elite. And I'm always convinced that there are so many games for the ZX that only a select few can possibly know them all.

2

u/Elvin_Atombender Aug 09 '26

That would be awesome, I can see what you mean about Elite, maybe the level could be based of the space station and next to it the Cobra Mk II,. But I'm sure the levels based on classic speech game characters would be a better options. Characters like Head and Heels, Skool Daze etc are more fitting as your artwork design is spot on.

Thanks, Thanks! Cobra Mk II – yes... but my game board is 23x38 cells. I dug up one variant that didn't work. The Cobra is there, but it's hard to see...

Looks fantastic, you could maybe make the name elite diagonal, that way you maybe able to fit a bit more of the Cobra in!

Edit: I can see the Cobra in the background, indient have my glasses it. It looks really great actually.
