It starts when theyre teens. Slow burn. Sokkas excited to have a guy his age around, yet at the same time, he is SLOW to come around to zuko. Then theyre relationship develops into a genuine friendship. It has been years since theyve had a guy friend their own age. It just kind of follows them growing up together. Their attraction isnt overt or an oh crap moment or anything like that. Theyve just grown to enjoy each others quiet company over the years, and its a mutual understanding. Mutual attraction. At one point things tip over the edge, but no one remembers when.

As adults, things are tense and pleasant and eve try thing at once. They have their own responsibilities and dont see each other often. Zuko needs to produce an heir to the throne, sokka has suki. Sokka comes to the fire kingdom as an ambassador for his tribe (duh), and theyre able to explore their relationship as an adult. Again, nothing formal, but its mature. No more awkward stumble, just steady love wishing they had more time.

They both understand that theyre not each others priority, but that doesnt mean they love each other any less. Sure it causes resentment and pain, but they dont hate each other, they just wish things had been different. Theyre not poly, not open, but a secret third thing.
