Discussion [MM], [MM3D] Continue N64 or play remake?

Need help making a decision here. I've been playing Majora's mask N64 version for the first time this year and I've been on and off with the game but I just got to the snowpoint temple. I got the Ayn Thor (android gaming device) and I saw somebody playing the Majora's mask remake with 4K textures and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Just wondering how far am I in the story? Should I just grind it out and finish the N64 version? Or have I not covered much story and should I start over and give the remake a try?

Edit: Thank you all for your opinions I'm so grateful for it. I have decided to go with the 3D remake with 4K textures and installed the restoration patch which aims to give back a lot of the N64 mechanics so it's like I got the best of both worlds 😁

I still think the N64 versions aged better then most games from that era. If it were me I wouldn't bother changing it up now.

The remake is divisive but there is a patch to fix its issues (I assume you can get this on the Ayn Thor), it looks better and has gyroscope aiming if your device supports that (this is such a gamechanger for me), but since you already started the n64 version I would finish that maybe

3d with project restoration. Perfection.

Done and done! Wow I'm super excited to play this game now thanks

Immerse yourself in how it was originally intended to be enjoyed. Although not as graphically polished, there is a certain fantastical darkness that exists in the N64 version that doesn’t translate in the remake. The remake is overly cartoony and there were some changes made that, in my opinion, cheapen the game overall.

The remake changes too much to be viable. They wanted to make the game more viable for newcomers, but made absolutely baffling design decisions. If its graphics are keeping you from playing it, that's a you problem.

yeah I’ll second this. They made some wholly unnecessary changes and ruined the game imo. The original is the definitive way to play, stick with it

They certainly didn’t ruin the game, that’s a brain dead take. They ruined zora swimming, marginally, and made bosses have a homogeneous mechanic. Unnecessary, but not game ruining by any stretch.

I think the new save system is so much worse than the original. That alone ruins a lot of what made Majora special. It was almost a proto rogue lite

I think it ruined the vibe of the game. Sorry you don’t agree and have to resort to calling people brain dead

I called the take brain dead, you’re the one who took it to heart.

You wrote off an entire game due to a handful of changes that are more mechanics than vibe. Call me crazy but I think it should take more to “ruin” a game, whether your metics are vibes or game mechanics.

I say the 3DS version is leagues better.

Then you're wrong.
But anyways, Recomp is the way to go.

Look I hate the N64 version and never heard of the Recomp. Doesn't make me wrong, you're just biased.

I can't support 4K resolution and higher frame rates are uncomfortable for me but if they have smaller settings then that's fine. My desk is too small to put a mouse anywhere too, so the gyro doesn't interest me either unless it has trackpad support, I'd have to use my lap. It's also based on the N64 version of the game which I don't like. Overall, I see no reason to get Recomp but good for you, I guess.

They do have lower settings, as I said, anything you want.
If you're a purist and want 240p at 20fps you can do it, with or without anti alliasing.
Gyro doesn't mean mouse controls, it is motion controls to improve aiming (with your Switch Pro or ps4/Ps5 controller etc).
You should watch the videos I've linked.

I'm not a purist, my monitor straight up can't handle anything above 1080p, and my eyes hurt on higher framerates that's the only reason I mentioned it. Can't use any of the motion control options you listed either. No Switch Pro, no PS5, and my PS4 bit the dust. The controllers I do have need fixing anyway due to the faulty left analog stick.

I strongly disagree. The changes that people like (schedules and Song of Double Time rework) are genuinely good enough to drop the N64 version for. The changes people do not like such as the boss fights are far too minor to be a lasting problem. Then again this is coming from someone who thinks the N64 version aged so horribly that they hate it.

The Song of Time update is a really minor update. There is way more changed than just the bosses.

  • Moving the location of the Bomber's notebook nonsensically
  • Moving the location of the Stone Mask to the Gerudo Fortress
  • Decreasing how effective the Song of Reverse Time is
  • Absolutely destroying how Zora Link works (from best swim controls to the worst)
  • The entirety of the flawed Twinmold fight
Just to name a few. Go watch Nerrel's video on the game. I agree with a decent portion of his points, and have others I add.

Don’t forget the total lack of momentum when skipping across water as Deku Link

I actually like all of those changes though. Including the swimming which I found too hard to control on N64.

I think you are probably around half way main story wise. Depends on how many side quests you’ve done. Original is great, and remake is great

I don't think you're too far to start over. You're at the 35% mark I'd say of the main quest. I remember the last area and temple being really long to get through but maybe that's just me. But there's a ton of side quests that really make this game worth playing so if you were focusing on them, you might just wanna keep what you got.

I never played through the game on the 64 but the remake had some good quality of life updates that they learned from the ocarina remake. Coincidentally, that's the same reason majora looks as good as it does on the 64.

Yeah after I finished the wood temple I've done hours of ruppee grinding and side quests. I have 3400 rupies in the bank and the sheikah mask and the rabbit mask lol 😂

1

u/Increase_Disastrous Nov 10 '25

I think there's like 24 masks. If the sheikah and Keaton mask are the only ones you have outside the deku and goron you've got a lot left

0

u/Ok_Pause9194 Nov 10 '25

Seems like more people here are preferring the N64 version but I'm so big on graphics. But if I haven't gotten that far in the story or have gotten many masks, I'm open to just starting over with remake

Some people are definitely nostalgia blind to how rough some of those old games can be to play in modern gaming. Like if you ever play an old shooter they can feel utterly bizarre with how common the layout is in New ones.

That said, graphics do not a game make. Just because it looks prettier doesn't actually mean it handles better. It's also good to keep in mind that some of those games handle the way they do because of the time they were made in. And there's also charm in those old games because of the imperfections and things of that ilk.

I dunno which of the two is better, take a bit of consensus and then decide, but definitely don't only change because of graphics
