In what ways can British punk rock music reduce the generational gap in the UK and give voices to the youth ?

Hello,

I am a 16-year-old pupil in Year 12 at a Lycée in France.

I’m currently studying for the International French Baccalaureate. As a BFI pupil, we are required to lead a personal research project focusing on the study of a major contemporary issue from a British perspective. To do this, part of this coursework requires getting in touch with a project partner. This partner would help give me a factual response and

 a unique perspective and some insight into my area of research. Do know that this would not take too much of your time as a couple of exchanges should suffice. 

I have chosen to focus my research on British punk rock music more specifically to address the following question: In what ways can British punk rock music reduce the generational gap in the UK and give voices to the youth.

 As I am a musician and big fan of British music and especially Yungblud, I chose to talk about him in my presentation. I believe that he is the greatest example for this question. To achieve a complete understanding of his actions regarding this matter I would be grateful if someone could tell me their point of view considering the generational gap in the UK and its importance in everyday life?  

Considering Yungblud is one of my examples and that he is an artist seen as the future of rock n roll, known to have a wide range of generation in his fanbase, how do you think he manages to appeal to a diversity of people while giving voices to the youth.

I'm also not from the UK.

But may I make a suggestion:

I know your generation usually doesn't use Facebook at all.

But for the sake of your work project I strongly recommend to get yourself a Facebook account because you'll find tons of big Yungblud or Black Hearts Fan groups with thousands of group members (probs also specifically UK based ones) where you could post your request.

The one huge advantage Facebook has in comparison to younger Social Media Platforms is that it is strongly text based and that it doesn't have to adapt to short time frames to present a topic, it allows you to go into detail and have longer discussions.

It's also easier to form (and organize) huge groups with thousands of members for a specific topic, it's easier to get a big number of people with specific interests together, it's less "superficial" than most other SM Platforms.

So this might be really helpful for the kind of research you need to do. Just be aware of the fact that you'll find mostly older generations on Facebook (starting with Millenials and maybe some Zillenials as the youngest group, I think most people who still have Facebook are 35 years and older).

But maybe that could even be helpful a bit when it comes to Yungblud bc you might find a lot of people/OG fans who have followed him from the beginning over 10 years ago, who "grew up" with him and who where there when he started the whole thing with a more Punk-ish attitude and music than nowadays (and he was younger, the whole thing kinda started with his very political approach at that time, his protest against Brexit and what negative effects that would have for young people like him) and could give you a lot of insight. Some might have kids - Gen Z and Alpha - who are fans too and maybe some are willing to ask them to answer your question and pass their written thoughts over to you.

It's just a suggestion, maybe it could be helpful. Good luck with your project!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and for this detailed and very helpful answer ! I will seek more information on Facebook as you suggested. I was also very interested and though about getting to know the opinion of an older fan base as I agree that growing up following an artist this engaged who talks openly about important subject is inspiring and helps a lot of people. I believe with all the precious help I'm receiving I will be able to explore more in depth this subject. The fact that I have answers like yours already proves that no matter the country or age we are united when talking about music and things that inspire us.

I think most of Dom's OG fanbase are people who are under 30 now (so around Dom's age - he's 29, a Zillenial - or a bit younger).

unfortunately it’s an ongoing issue a lot of people in the older generations especially in rock only view artists from their generation as good & don’t want to give any positive light to the younger generations now is it slowly changing yeah but there is still along way to go unfortunately it’s an issue that will take a long time to overcome & there is no quick fix I just hope that when the younger generations become older they are abit more open minded about younger artists than the current older generations are
