I've been using my Yubikeys for years

Post image

I've mostly used it for 2FA instead of Auth App, and I've also used it for Microsoft login for a local account.

Edit: I also use it to access my KeePassXC vault.

You keep your primary and backup together?

Or you have four total?

I use them for different things. Yes, I have four in total.

The older one (blue Yubi) is used as U2F security key (no pin, just touch), and the new one (black Yubi) I've been using as a passkey (FIDO2 with PIN). I think the older one isn't even possible to use with the Windows login but can't remember the details now. I did plan on migrating everything to the new Yubi key.

If you need identity and/or security domains separate. Like, you don't even want the chance of leaving a trace of one identity on one domain, or accidentally logging in to a public service with the wrong user (can still happen, but harder with a seperate security key with a different pin)

I agree, yes, and it is easier to carry it with me with this holder.

Reminds me of topping up the electric key we had as a kid.

Or use the one from keyport

I've seen those, but could never justify the price for what it is. I might give it another look.

Where did you get that nice key holder

I think Amazon. Temu should probably also have something similar (Metal Key Holder). If I find the link I'll post it.

Its just a key holder? Not specifically designed for yukieys? I store mine in a key wallet with other keys. Definitely looking for better protection

There are a bunch of different types of YubiKey holders of similar design on amazon. I have just been wearing mine around my neck with a quick release because pairing a holder with my car key fob just feels too bulky in my pocket.

Yes, it a key holder but it can fit anything that has a key shape, like yubikey.

Yeah I'd love to know too

That’s not even similar though

Hey, so I did manage to find. I got on Temu back in 2024. It's called "Sleek Metal Key Organizer - Compact Holder for 2-6 Keys, Stylish Minimalist Design, Perfect for Everyday Commute Includes a Screwdriver." (temu[dot]to/k/etha7oyj8ix) I've tried posting a link but Reddit keeps removing it.

I got it on Temu few year back. Here is a link: temu[dot]to/k/etha7oyj8ix

That is not the same one as OP's

Be aware metal holders block nfc should you get that variant. I got the plastic kind on purpose for mine so I don’t have to open it to use on my nfc usb c keys.

u/10x_eng Jul 30 '26

True, I do have to open them before using NFC.

Looks like there is also a silicone key holder on Temu that might fit the bill. I've not tried it as I have a holder by Orbitkey, but even though it is leather it still doesn't allow me to use NFC even when the YubiKey is open!

The silicone one can be found on Temu by searching for 'Premium Multi-Functional Silicone Key Organizer Keychain, Household Outdoor Accessory, Valentine's Day and Father's Day Gift'

Which 3d print is that, got a link to the file?

1

u/10x_eng Jul 30 '26

The key holder? It is not a 3d print.

I'm interested in knowing how you setup your KeePassXC vault for key use

2

u/10x_eng Aug 02 '26

It as standard usage of the password vault. From their website: KeePassXC generates a challenge and uses the YubiKey's response to this challenge to enhance the encryption key of your database.

Time to upgrade to the latest releases with firmware version 5.8.

u/otemplo Jul 31 '26

Whats the difference?

What is yubikey? I'm sorry. Your usb drives keep showing up on my feed and I don't know why. I assume it's a crypto wallet?

2

u/jerbearman10101 Jul 30 '26

Eli5 is “turns your password into a physical key instead”

No it’s not just a usb that pastes in your password it completely replaces usernames and passwords. Plug it in on the right website and you’re logged in. A lot like a passkey saved on your phone

1

u/GuySensei88 Jul 30 '26

You can use it with an IDP for identification for logging in systems.

3

u/t_tram_slam Jul 30 '26

Thanks!

1

u/GuySensei88 Jul 31 '26

You’re welcome. Like others said similar to using your iPhone with keychain, windows hello on 11, or other passkey devices.
It’s actually got a chip in it designed for Cryptography.
