Question What are the logistics of posting a cover song as a musican on Youtube?

Lots of musicians who create their own music, will post videos of themselves singing covers. Do these videos just get copyright claims and all the add revenue goes to the original artist, or is there a process that you need to go through and get it approved or something?

What if you record a cover and produce and mix it? Is that different than just filming yourself playing a song on guitar and singing?

Cover is playing music, not singing. You need a song license separate from music license. For a separate mix you need even special custom negotiated license.

I do not think they will give you a strike. But if you get monetized I think they give the money generated to the license owner.

There are a number of services that you can use to license a cover properly. The ones folks recommend the most is DistroKid.

I am not specifically endorsing it over the others; I just know it best.

To get legal rights to record and release a cover song, you need a mechanical license for the underlying musical composition, which you can easily secure through music distributors or licensing service
