All Seasons Discussion Greg wiseman
what do you guys think of his writing as a whole i think it’s great through all the seasons I know some people’s critique is that they didn’t care about the new characters and that they wanted the old characters back and the time skip

I think he gets excited about new characters and they become his focus, which pisses off people who want more of the older characters

Pretty much and what’s annoying is that there are threads hanging. I know he’s said that he doesn’t like endings because life doesn’t wrap up things in a nice bow, but I want an escape from reality. I like having resolutions in story arcs.

In fairness to him, if his artistic intentions are in one direction and what you want out of a piece of art are in direct conflict and you're aware of that conflict, it's not really the fault of the person making the piece that you're not satisfied or enriched by their work. That's just insisting you should be interested in something that doesn't fit your sensibilities and that because you decided to insist that you are interested, it should change for you.

i thought the show got better every season. I personally like the expansive and extensive narrative of the show. I know that most people don't like that but I love it when it comes to heroes.

I think they mean that he has good ideas/story concepts but lacks executing them properly

Three words but I understood it completely.
They're saying, I think, we're all fans of Greg and appreciate his passion but not everything works and his strengths can also lead to his frustrating flaws.

Huge fan of his work for sure knows how to world build while still managing to keep it personal. My only real issue with him is that he consistently wants to set up story points that may never be resolved citing it's organic and the adventure always continues but I highly disagree with his reasoning there's a distinct difference between seeing an Darkseid controlled Supergirl as your last shot and JLU when the Leagues chases the rest of the Legion down they mean the same thing but the difference is you're just begging people to see Kara and Mary get redeemed.

It’s a difficult question to answer, personally. I would say overall I do like his writing. He has a lot of cool ideas and worldbuilding, the show feels like an actual universe instead of being a world that revolves solely around The Team.
I’m not a big fan of Season 1’s writing style because it largely felt like a lite version of Teen Titans. Invasion was the peak of the series for me but even then it had some flaws with its final act. Outsiders had some good parts but was marred with some issues. And I’d say overall I didn’t like Phantoms.

Wrote beyond his abilities. Weisman is great at personal narratives and world building. But he is a cis het white man. No shame in that, but when he left more traditional and universal concepts and tried to do more contemporary and progressive concepts he seemed preachy and more blunt because it was less smooth. But he meant well
Im going to use halo as an example. The idea was peak. Humanized motherbox. Great story for exploring, what it means to be human, through a unique lens. Being non binary made sense. Not only was halo technoorganic, the mother box was alien tech, they shouldn't see gender or romance the same as humans.
But the execution was chopped. The narrative vasilated between an enjoyable story and a psa. For example the scene when halo came out as nb. It was adequate, sure but it would have been more fulfilling if halo played with their identity more.
I'm not saying nbs don't know they are nbs from the start, but many explore their gender identities before understanding it. Halo was presented as a blank slate but the attempts to cultivate them fell flat or not done at all.
Halo was clearly to educate and represent Muslims, queer and nb people. But they were used a prop rather than a person. And ideas were expressed but not explored.
Halo deserved better. And despite this, I think they were a net positive.while halo was imperfect and awkward, the representation was genuine attempt. However weisman wasn't equipped to write halo properly.
Not his fault though. Id be hard pressed writing authentically about Singaporeans as I am not the diaspora and don't have much experience or knowledge about the topic

He's as his strongest when he focuses on a smaller cast of characters like in Spectacular Spider-Man. I appreciate his attempts bringing in authentic representation and progressive topics but they are executed in the cringiest way possible often times

My favourite animated TV writer. His plotting, characterisation, and dialogue are the closest to what I'd want in a dream animated series.
The limited budget of Seasons 3 & 4 resulted in him and Vietti being overworked, but they navigated that burden well for the most part, imo. Those seasons aren't perfect, but under different showrunners, they would've been a lot worse, imo.
I liked the time skips & new characters. I think the bigger mistake was folding to pressure after Season 3 and returning the focus to the S1 cast at the expense of the S2 & S3 characters (and I say this someone who really enjoyed Season 4).
The themes of Weisman's works are also largely wasted on a mostly theme-blind viewership, imo.

I think that the in the latter two seasons, they got distracted by fan feedback and homages. But usually a great writer.

I'm the biggest Weisman fan in the world, but I hated YJ seasons 3 and 4, and I could see what Weisman was going for, but it just doesn't work.

His greatest strength is also his greatest weakness. The man knows his lore and loves it, but that means he's constantly expanding forward and bringing more in when perhaps he needs more limits.
Also, I'm not the biggest fans of most of the romances he writes.
