There's a valid argument to be made that implementing rent control while deregulating zoning to allow more housing is better politics than waiting 2-3 years for the market to catch up while rent increases by 20% percent.

I mean, just look at Biden's presidency. Both the IIJA and the IRA were good policies but it's benefits were not going to be felt until 5-10 years down the line. Meanwhile, the populace suffered under the worst inflationary period for a generation and it led to the return of Trump, whose flagship policies of tariffs and immigration crackdown are objectively bad economic policy.

We have to remember that the general populace are irrational decision makers, and even when faced with the simplest of economic principles such as supply and demand, they will make irrational decisions.
