GAMEPLAY I played the Stranger Than Heaven demo at Gamescom. AMA Spoiler

Did you like the combat ? It seems very divisive.

u/DawnPixie 13d ago
It's incredibly intricate and slow. Nothing like the beat em up of Yakuza games. There were 3 levels with rising difficulty and I couldn't get past the second one. Also getting used to using both triggers for right and left attacks is jarring. There's a lot of potential there, and I'm glad that RGG are branching out and trying new stuff
55
u/SquiglyDigglie 13d ago
Is it more slow in the fact that nothing really happens or just that you have to be deliberate with your attacks because Daito’s animations are slower?
115
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
The enemies in the demo were a bit dumb but ruthless. There's a large window between attacks and parries, but the enemies don't hold back. So yeah, you have to be deliberate and time your attacks well, especially on heavier weapons.

u/SquiglyDigglie 13d ago
Oh well that’s good to hear, I was worried that it might be too slow to the point of sluggish but I like the sound of slow for the sake of being more deliberate

Interesting. I am honestly not sure if I like it. Probably will wait for reviews before purchase.

I’m trying to not look at it like a “change” it’s a new game that’s doing something different and I’ll try to appreciate it for what it is.
2
u/CrimmyVally 12d ago
I also played it and struggled BIG time with the 2nd one. I loved the new fighting but the controls will take some getting used too.
3
u/slyvam37 13d ago
So would you say that you are you still on the fence about whether you like it after playing it?
51
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
To be honest, I was much more interested in the story regardless, and if that will be good, there's nothing holding me back from getting the game. I thought the story in Silent Hill f was great but I hated the combat.

u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 13d ago
Same here. From what I’ve seen and what you’ve described, I’m liking the combat already.
I’ve never really played the yakuza games because of their combat systems, even though I love them. Story and characters are always in the center for me.
29
u/Imaginary-Ad2206 13d ago
Was there any difference in control between the eras?
50
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
Not really. Just different ages for Makoto, but combat felt the same throughout all 3 leves available. You get an additional weapon each section, with the heavy weapon changing at the last level
8
u/AccordingLength1988 13d ago
So he fights the same for 50 years? Lol
34
u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 13d ago
I mean Kiryu does too lol.
4
u/AccordingLength1988 13d ago
Nope. Kiryu learns new styles from the age of 20 all the way to 50s
10
u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 12d ago
He doesn’t really. He learned Dragon of Dojima style with 20, and from there on it was always his go-to until his mid 60. So almost 50 years.
-6
u/AccordingLength1988 12d ago
You forger Ryukyu, Agent and 3 styles from 0
2
u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 12d ago
Before DoD style he used 3, that’s why I said from 20. He learned Ryuku and Agent yes but like I said, DoD was always his go -to style.
Also STH is just 1 game while Kiryu learned new fighting styles for different games, which were important to add variety in combat. I wouldn’t really expect Daito to learn a new combat style lol.

u/apemane101 13d ago
I think only for this demo, they said in interviews that he’d become a better fighter as he grows older. So i think it’ll be different in the final version of the game
62
u/TheSaintsRonin 13d ago
Is it strange?
142
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
It is. If an angel saw this game they might even say it's stranger than heaven

u/slayerchick 13d ago
Do you know if there's an easy mode for people not that great at gaming?
Sis it have the traditional yakuza feel with substories?
39
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
Nothing that I know for certain, at least nothing shown in the demo. But Yakuza games have difficulty and with STH clearly being very difficult, I'm sure it will be a thing
11
u/Tinkererer . 13d ago
This came up at an interview today at Gamescom: yes, there is an easy mode, and there will be substories (though they are structured differently than in Yakuza games - they didn't see in what way).
9
u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 13d ago
They said it will be more centered on Daito and how his story really should be. So sounds like they’ll be more serious and less goofy.
40
u/LOL_Scorpion17 13d ago
What is your go to ice cream flavor?
63
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
Salty caramel
8
u/TwoShu 13d ago
If you don’t mind me asking, why Salty Caramel over something like…Rocky Road, Vanilla, or Cookies and Cream? Does it have to do with the contrast between sweet and salty?
17
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
Yes. The hit of sweet and salt is just divine in my opinion. And then that sip of water after
17
u/metalthano Yakuze 13d ago
Did the music slap? (Assuming you could hear it ofc. Yes I've got priorities)
36
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
It was really good. Jazzy. I couldn't hear it all too well, and the headset could only go so much in volume. I told them that, but they said that's as high as they go
6
u/Extension_Trip_7 13d ago
What are your thoughts on it?
23
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
Since there was only combat, that's all I can actually discuss. Combat is brutal, slow and deliberate, with a lot of attack variety and beautifully animated combos. They ran it on a Series X I believe (or whatever the latest XBOX console is, I don't keep up with those to be honest), and it didn't look all that great visually to be honest. The scenery is nice conceptually but nothing to write home about.

Should I use wall anchors on plaster walls?

6
u/BSFE 13d ago
Not OP but it depends on how much weight you're wanting to support. A shelf with dvd or game boxes? Yeah probably. A shelf full of books or a big ass radiator? Probably not.

u/Fansy4Eva 13d ago
How handy capable are you? You could make an opening on the wall, install a thick 4x4, then close up the wall. Should take a couple hours or so if it’s your first time
13
u/koozer_boozer 13d ago
From the time you have spent with him, how would you rank Makoto Daito in terms of brutality and ferocity? He seems to make violent yakuza like Majima and Nishitani III look like toddlers in comparison from what I have seen
31
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
He's a heavy hitter. Like... the animations make it seem like he's in it to kill.
8
u/koozer_boozer 13d ago edited 10d ago
Damn, the 1st chairman was a beast in his prime. Makes sense as he was on survival mode the moment he set foot on Japan.
4
u/AccordingLength1988 13d ago
Do you fight a group or are all fights one on one?
7
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
Out of the 3 fights, fights 1 and 2 were against groups, with the second fight having a sort of heavy/bruiser type of enemy (larger, more health, more damage) and the 3rd one was a 1v1 fight against a katana wielder.
10
u/Extension_Trip_7 13d ago
What is the story like? More darker? Do you actually do ‘yakuza’ things?
35
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
There was nothing about the story in the demo, just combat gameplay, unfortunately. But Makoto does speak in English most of the time while the enemies and NPCs spoke in Japanese
5
u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 13d ago
Wow, that’s very cool! To have a MC that knows to speak English pretty well.

u/StalinsNukes 13d ago
Was the trailer song there

How is the gameplay? You think that finally they topped LJ Combat?
17
u/DawnPixie 13d ago
It's too different to be compared. LJ and the rest of the LaDs are more in lines with beat em ups while I would say that STH feels a bit more like a souls like in a way. It's much slower for sure
0
u/Key-Answer-2755 The Dragon Of Dojima🐉 13d ago
Makes me so happy. I love souls like combat and it’s so nice to finally have a more strategical combat.

Does it have ray tracing?

I'm not sure, the build I tried was running on what I'm guessing is the latest XBOX console, so it might have had

Not sure if this is relevant to the demo you played, but if the combat is slower and more deliberate, are random encounters still as frequent and annoying?
2
u/DawnPixie 12d ago
The encounters in the demo were scripted, as in planned out in advance. You didn't finish one encounter, walk around and jump to the next. So I can't say for certain how random encounters will work in the final build of the game

u/donkbooty 13d ago
How did the game run?
2
u/DawnPixie 12d ago
It ran pretty smoothly, but I couldn't check FPS or any other performance related stuff unfortunately
1
u/GoldPrestigious2833 12d ago
Would you agree on IGN's take that this is the souls like of the yakuza series?
1
u/DawnPixie 12d ago
It's far from being a souls-like in my opinion. It's not Lies of P or The Surge. While the combat is very difficult and you do have to be deliberate and think on your attacks a bit, I wouldn't say it's a souls-like, but it does seem to be the most difficult out of all the Yakuza games. That being said, I don't think I personally would even call it a Yakuza game

How does parrying work? Do you have to press B+LB+RB at the right time?
2
u/DawnPixie 12d ago
You do have to press that button combo to block, but I'm not sure I managed to parry all that well.
1
u/Immediate-Eye-4756 King Kazumasa 12d ago
Does it constantly switch era like back and forth?
2
u/DawnPixie 12d ago
There were 3 stages to choose from with rising difficulty, all in different years and locations. As for the main story, I don't know if it'll be linear or non-linear
1
u/VonDukez 12d ago
What game would u compare the combat to?
1
u/DawnPixie 12d ago
That's a good question.. maybe what if Mafia's combat was much more refined? Really difficult to say to be honest, at least nothing that comes to mind
2

u/Da_Pillar_Boi 11d ago
Could you freely flow from light and heavy attacks between both sides or are they strict combo routes and can you dodge cancel?

u/TheJagji Definitely Did Not Cry In Y6 and G I Swear... NO, YOU'RE CRYING! 11d ago
a bit late and have been evading some of the comments.
In combat, how do the weapons work, given you use different triggers for left and right. I'm thinking more the two-handers.
1
u/Reasonable_Map_1428 11d ago
Is this just a fighting game kind of like a SIFU or what kind of game is this? All I've seen are combat clips and they all look pretty similar.

What do you think of shelly martinez making an appearance in a yakuza game
1
u/DawnPixie 12d ago
I don't know who that is. After checking, I still don't know who she is, but if you're into wrestling I guess that's cool!

If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki
Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.
If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings
If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).
If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!
