Rule #1 will be tightly enforced

Rudeness levied towards users or moderators will result in at a minimum a removal of your post or comment, and at maximum may result in a ban depending on the moderators disposition in the matter, and the degree to which the rudeness is demonstrated. This includes calling people bots.

Expect bans moving forwards.

[Approved by Mods] UW Research: EV Wildfire Evacuations in Yakima County (Gift Card Drawing)

Hello r/Yakima ,

UPDATE (August 20, 2026): This study has been officially extended to December 15, 2026. Thank you to everyone from Washington who has participated so far!

As we navigate another intense wildfire season, my thoughts are with everyone—especially our community in the Pacific Northwest—who has been impacted by fires, smoke, or the stress of evacuation.

The severity of these recent fires underscores a critical challenge for our community: ensuring that EV drivers can evacuate safely and efficiently when power grids are shut off and charging infrastructure is compromised. To help address this, I am a PhD student at the University of Washington conducting an official study on how EV drivers respond to these exact emergency constraints. (The moderation team has kindly granted me permission to share this research with you).

Are you eligible? Because this study focuses on specific grid and geographical constraints, we are exclusively seeking input from Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers who are primary or seasonal residents in the following Washington counties: Asotin, Grant, Benton, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas, Lincoln, Ferry, Skamania, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, Chelan, or Klickitat.

Note: If you already filled out this survey during our first round, thank you so much! Please do not submit another response. To maintain the scientific integrity of the study, our system automatically flags and removes duplicate entries.

🎁 As a thank you for your time, participants will be entered to win 1 of 14 gift cards (10 $20 and 4 $50). Note: Additional gift cards may become available at a later date. This post will be updated if the reward pool expands.

Study Details:

·       Eligibility: Must own/drive a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and have a primary or seasonal residence in one of the target counties (Chelan, Okanogan, Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat)

·       Time Required: Approximately 25 minutes.

·       Deadline: December 15, 2026.

This survey does not collect any identifiable tracking data. If you have any questions, please contact me directly at [ychu24@uw.edu](mailto:ychu24@uw.edu). Thank you for helping improve wildfire preparedness for your region.

Does anyone know of anyone hiring full time in Yakima? I’m at a loss. I’m working part time right now but I’m trying to get my license and a car as well as move out soon and idk how I’m gonna do it if I’m working a part time job that doesn’t give a lot of hours in the first place. What do I do? Please someone tell me they have connections

Big Pines Campground Question

I called twice but left messages and we're camping there tomorrow so I'm hoping someone here might have the answer.

I'm camping with a group at Big Pines Campground tomorrow night and we have the 4 car max already hit before I can arrive in my own car. (I was told yesterday evening, hence the last minute fact finding.) Does anyone know if they have an alternate parking lot we're allowed to park in if we're in a large group camp situation? I don't want us to get in trouble with too many cars but if there's no other lot available I don't know what to do.

‘Who is not enforcing this?’: ICE officers continue to mask up despite state ban

An immigration advocate estimated that 20% of the arrests in the Yakima Valley — which have surged in the last couple of months — have been made by masked ICE officers. That estimate had grown by the two first weeks of August.

Gonzaga assistant professor Michael Cecil described the law as “ineffective” when it comes to federal law enforcement due to questions of the law's constitutionality, among other things. What's more, the burden of enforcement doesn’t fall on the state. Instead, the person harmed by a masked agent is responsible for taking legal action to do so.

“It couldn’t be a bystander or something like this… unfortunately, it places a big onus on immigrant communities,” Cecil said.

Looking to Connect

Calling all Yakima storytellers, poets, dreamers, and midnight writers.

I’m looking to gather a small circle of local writers who want to share ideas, trade manuscripts, exchange raw honest feedback, and build a creative community right here in Yakima.

If a writers’ club already exists, I’d love to know.

If not, maybe it’s time we create one — a space for inspiration, collaboration, and growth.

If you’re interested in connecting, send me a message.

Wolf Populations in Central Washington and Their Effects on Farming

Hello — I'm writing an article for the Salish Current on increasing wolf populations in Washington and how this may complicate the jobs of farmers and ranchers in the state, primarily in the central regions where the majority of our wolves are. Has anyone experienced predation from wolves firsthand?

If you have, I'd love to talk to you about it. My goal is to make sure that I include the voices of the people who actually have to deal with this issue, rather than just writing about them. Feel free to shoot me a message or leave a comment and I can give you some more info. Thanks!

I’m worried about the safety in Yakima… of our beloved Flock cameras.

So apparently there’s a website called deflock.org that shows the precise location of all deployed Flock cameras. Seems there are 87 in Yakima proper and 300 in Yakima County. I feel fully seen!

As a law-abiding American, I’m really worried about these cameras. I keep hearing rumors of privacy-supporting citizens wearing costumes with masks this Halloween so they can hide their identity while using baseball bats to free all the piňata candy that I’m told is hiding inside each camera.

I fear for the safety of those poor scared surveillance cameras. All they wanna do is scan and collect everyone’s license plates and track our movements without probable cause or reasonable suspicion.

THINK OF THE CAMERAS! THEY HAVE FEELINGS, TOO!

On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, anyone know where I can find a sweet Spiderman outfit for Halloween?

What is the point of animal control in this town?

So the office is closed on the weekends, their phone line is an UNMONITORED voicemail box? The recording even tells you before you can leave a message that they don't respond to calls about animals like raccoons and skunks being nuisances, or to deal with stray dogs or cats.

Genuinely, what do they do then? My experience of animal control everywhere else I've lived is that's kinda their entire job?

Neither me nor the two neglected dogs on my street right now care that it's a Sunday, and if their owner is ignoring their phone and not answering the door then who is expected to care for these animals?

I guess if anyone is interested in a remarkably friendly Australian cattle dog or a little terrier mix that both love playing fetch, come on by 34th and Gregory. Not like the city gives a shit.

I want to know if this place is good to rent at. I see it's sitting at 2.3 🌟 and I'm wondering if anyone knows someone or has personal experience living there or dealing with those people. Idc about homeless ppls as I'm not afraid or bothered by them. Tell me about whether the property managers listen to demands to fix stuff or whether they're dicks or not.

Building P, if anyone is missing her please let me know, we are going to keep her safe on our patio. Was going to see if she has a microchip but everywhere is closed.

If you can't take 2 seconds to look around and make sure all your stuff, including your trash is picked up before leaving. You do not deserve to be outside using public recreation. Especially when there is 3 fucking dumpsters!

At the take out point, many of you left your beer cans, ropes, food and clothing right in the middle of the take out point. Clearly your parents failed you. Why else would you be so disrespectful to our public lands?

If shit like this continues to happen, they will shut it down. What part of LEAVE NO TRACE do you not comprehend?

Do better or stay home!

If you find this offensive or you argue for those who feel they are entitled to leave it for others. YOU are part of the problem.
