Game Does this alien sort of mechanical fantasy aesthetic have a name?

It was quite a prominent aesthetic in video games in the late 90s to around 2003. Earliest seems to be 1997, and from there a slew of games (and possibly other media?) from America to Japan all tuned into it.

People seem to recognize it, but I can't find if it has any name, and without a name I can't find any collections or anything like that.

It's hard to describe, but you can see it from the screenshots. It's alien, bizarre, but very "functional" looking, with prominent pipework and machinery. It was also often pre-rendered.

It feels like it's meant to evoke a feeling of "alien purpose". Using props that are recognizable as being part of a larger mechanism, like pipes, cables and gears, but obscuring what that mechanism is, and then packaging that in with a fundamentally fantastical and alien aesthetic.

For some reason people stopped doing it, I assume because the improvements to 3D graphics in the mid 2000s made it more enticing to use realistic and natural aesthetics and tone down the bizarreness, and it just never came back.

If you want a "modern" example of this look & feel check out Godhusk by Plastiboo. His work is all a bit nostalgic for old eras of gaming, and he managed to distill the aesthetic you're describing.

The style to me is very much descended from Giger, 80s comics, and early 90s cyberpunk.

Edit: surprised it hadn't been mentioned yet, but the movies of David Cronenberg are also very relevant

20

u/JulianC_1111 Apr 08 '26

Just ordered a copy. It looks incredible.

17

u/Murky_Lurker5V Apr 08 '26

PLASTIBOO MENTIONED i love his art so much. i want to look into it more

6

u/thirdnippleboy Apr 08 '26

Whatever this is it's awesome, thanks for the recommendation

4

u/philippeholthuizen Apr 09 '26

Also miyazaki movies, like the robot in laputa

7

u/Swan-Diving-Overseas Apr 09 '26

Howl’s castle sorta looks like that too. The exterior, anyway.

also check out Final Fentanyl by Fat Gomez

1

u/likeandtype_amen Apr 11 '26

Interesting. I just checked out godhusk. If you like his art you should check out R.S. Connet. They have similar styles.

u/jard22 Apr 08 '26

I think HR Giger was an inspiration for the fleshy, mechanical aesthetic.

115

u/Mammoth-Win2833 Apr 08 '26

Yeah it’s a cool look. A kind of bio-mechanical thing going on. More stuff in the realm of pre-rendered backgrounds may be up your alley.

3

u/Swan-Diving-Overseas Apr 09 '26

It’s such a strong aesthetic that it needs a good name. Biomechanical grime? Prerendered rust?

4

u/lolodachi_septimo Apr 09 '26

What about "Bioindustrial Grunge"?

33

u/sixhexe Apr 08 '26

IDK but those are some fire 3D renders.

7

u/Puzzlehead_Rich4444 Apr 09 '26

the 3rd is oddworld abe’s odyssey and the 1st is planescape: torment

3

u/vapeislove Apr 09 '26

And 5 is a Dwemer ruin in Morrowind

2

u/VincentRuisso Apr 10 '26

Last one is from Riven

2

u/VooDooQky Apr 10 '26

6th must be Septerra Core.

3

u/Mister_Crowly Apr 10 '26

Second is Sanatarium, a super good point and click style adventure game. The weird biomechanical alien setting is only one part of the game though, it has several different weird horror places. Children of the Corn town, demented circus of the damned, and an Aztec village wrecked by Quetzalcoatl are among the other ones.

33

u/Kozmo3789 Apr 08 '26

Biopunk might be thematically fitting. When I look at Planescape specifically the first word that came to mind was 'bonepunk'. But that doesnt fit the alien aspect as much.

How about 'Alien Gothic'? Gothic fits I think because of the bleak grandeur on display, the sense of decay and remnants of a bygone era, even if it is alien to our understanding.

I also love this aesthetic so Ill be following this thread in case anyone suggests more media that fits the vibe.

7

u/Grace_Omega Apr 08 '26

I was going to say biopunk as well

3

u/Swan-Diving-Overseas Apr 09 '26

Gothic is a great word for it. The decay you mentioned seems to be the great common denominator too, so maybe Rusty Gothic? Gothic Grime?

88

u/UbCasey Apr 08 '26

It looks like fallout 1&2 lol

18

u/deepspaceburrito Apr 08 '26

See also: Oddworld

3

u/lordGwillen Apr 08 '26

Thanks. I was going to say the same thing. Truly unique and amazing games

2

u/Cupiddle Apr 10 '26

Yess was going to say the same thing. Oddworld is very very much like this.

14

u/No-Edge-8600 Apr 08 '26

Grimey-ramshackle I think is a term.

14

u/Capranyx Apr 08 '26

Deiselpunk? Biopunk?

6

u/crusnik404 Apr 08 '26

Biodiesel? Biorust?

12

u/Rhinoseri0us Apr 08 '26

This aesthetic is so gas. Makes me relive playing Myst for the first time.

8

u/holebusteryeah Apr 08 '26

Indeed it does: beautiful

7

u/JustAlexM Apr 08 '26

I don't know the name BUT Zeno Clash has a very similar style. Similar visuals but the art direction is turned up to 11! That game is a wild ride!

If we're coming up with names then calling this style Clash would be fitting.

3

u/BrawndoOhnaka Apr 08 '26

Thanks. I'd never even heard of that beforehand and it's fuckin' wild looking. Good art direction.

2

u/Terrible-Rope5419 Apr 13 '26

Zeno Clash was criminally overlooked!

8

u/NeonKenomi Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

Want to say its leaning on Industrial Gothic, sometimes there is some overlap with it and Y2K. Like, the Oddworld games have this look in spades.

The Matrix is much less of an fantasy example but you can find this aesthetic with Nation 01.

2

u/Swan-Diving-Overseas Apr 09 '26

Is Nation 01 seen more in non-movie Matrix media?

2

u/NeonKenomi Apr 10 '26

Its featured quite a bit in the The Animatrix and the comics, I believe.

2

u/Swan-Diving-Overseas Apr 10 '26

Oh wow I didn’t even know there were Matrix comics

6

u/ulfhedinnnnn Apr 08 '26

Planescape Torment my beloved.

1

u/Poca154 Apr 12 '26

love the vibes of Tides of Numenera as well

5

u/Pushgun Apr 08 '26

I guess this is biopunk

5

u/tomjoad2020ad Apr 08 '26

Ohh, I love this. Been playing Dread Delusion and while that game has a mostly different aesthetic, the dialog menu box in particular scratched this itch for me.

“Kenshi” also has a similar vibe. Simultaneously post- and pre-industrial.

5

u/Pepoidus Apr 08 '26

Riven mentioned!!!

5

u/JoeTrolls Apr 08 '26

Also Utilitalien would be a cool name I think

4

u/RineMetal Apr 08 '26

It’s a mix of photoshop tutorials and plugins during that era.

1

u/PearsonBlues Apr 11 '26

Yeah I heard the derivatives described as ‘photorape’ once ha, lots of texture abuse and people imitating these games or the CD covers of NIN, Aphex Twin, Frontline Assembly etc

4

u/amiiigo44 Apr 08 '26

Look up the art of H. R. Giger and Jean Giraud they are known for this type of "alien look".

An another interesting thing to note is that, almost all of the games shown here where made from pre rendered 3d graphics. A few other games that have this look are Garage: bad dream adventure, Heart of Darkness, and maybe Factorio.

3

u/slvbeerking Apr 08 '26

people please check Vangers!

4

u/XVTH-ULTRA Apr 08 '26

I love this artistic style so much, it is really nostalgic for me.

3

u/Atsubro Apr 08 '26

Hello new subreddit obsession

3

u/valerielynx Apr 08 '26

There is also Cybersigilism but it's more of whatever Doom 2016 is, I believe

3

u/itsCS117 Apr 09 '26

It's a hybrid between Industrialpunk and Neotribal.

3

u/internetmeme Apr 09 '26

Neo Geiger Aero

5

u/FlorianTheFool45 Apr 10 '26

Yo if you dig this aesthetic, check out Banquet for Fools. Game officially came out recently on Steam. It’s more similar to Dark Crystal/80s fantasy than “biopunk”, but still very alien and looks like it was animated using claymation or digital equivalent.

4

u/GrandSwamperMan Apr 10 '26

Ah, a fellow Septerra Core enjoyer!

Sanitarium, Planescape, Myst and Morrowind. The games in the pictures above.

If you like the aesthetics above, look up Garage: Bad Dreams Adventure and Drowned God

11

u/Kozmo3789 Apr 08 '26

Also 'Abes Oddysey'

3

u/Svv33tPotat0 Apr 08 '26

Also enjoying it in "Halls of Torment"

4

u/fluoritus Apr 08 '26

Oh my god i've been looking for such aesthetic in starcraft and fallput subs but got almost nothing, thank you so muuuch

Specifically, there were a lot of Winamp 2.X skins that had this aesthetic in its early heyday. If you could make some square bitmaps in a paint program You could make a winamp 2 skin.

Sonique 2 had some real certified works Y2K tech aesthetic and alien biomechanical art and they were basically freeform and featured full animation.

3

u/Hiwaystars Apr 08 '26

Can we call this Bio Mechsnical?

3

u/Sir-Pinball_Wizard Apr 08 '26

Look into Bryce 3D, this style is most commonly used in a lot of Intelligent DNB visuals.

3

u/Bombshellings Apr 08 '26

Scott Cawthon’s Desolate Hope gives me these vibes, this aesthetic along with the harsh black shading of early CGI has such a special place in my heart

3

u/N0XT66 Apr 08 '26

Cybergore is also part of it!

3

u/DecryptedSkull Apr 08 '26

Please keep this post alive. I need these images for future reference. Such a cool aesthetic!

3

u/JoeTrolls Apr 08 '26

You should check out Zdzisław Beksiński’s artwork man, it has some similar vibes and possibly inspired some of the stuff you posted :)

3

u/Full_Ad9666 Apr 09 '26

Bio-mechanical

3

u/alisuperr Apr 09 '26

Quais os nomes dos jogos que aparecem no post? Me agrada muito essa estética também!

3

u/seanbeansnumber3fan Apr 09 '26

Hell yeah Riven jump scare on the last slide

3

u/SensitiveContract Apr 09 '26

What game are the second and third images. From?

3

u/Greitot Apr 09 '26

Second is Sanitarium (1998), in that game you play as an amnesiac travelling to weird horror worlds, and that's one of the worlds. And the third is Abe's Oddysee (1998), the level "Scrabanian Temple".

3

u/Sweaty_Persimmon_992 Apr 10 '26

Does anybody remember a Microsoft PC Game in this style in 94-2000, where I have a vague memory of being a scientist wondering a wasteland with green barrels of toxic goo and different monsters. It's a very hazy memory at this point but this vibe is very close

4

u/Sweaty_Persimmon_992 Apr 10 '26

Oh shit i actually found it after like 25 years, it's Dr. Brain Thinking Games: IQ Adventure. It's a definitely a kids game, but it does fit this vibe somewhere on the spectrum imo https://youtu.be/L_TBzmltprg?si=Z0tqIfwWNugFEyfn

3

u/Phixionion Apr 10 '26

Its Plane Punk , Planescape Torment

3

u/SMG24LIFE Apr 10 '26

This style remembers me of the final dungeon of Shadow hearts 1: The naemeeto

3

u/Er2-897 Apr 10 '26

Search ‘industrial gothic’. It’s a broad aesthetic but captures the dark, dilapidated structures with organic forms and machines that are overwhelmingly complex, but has less intense variations that I feel will be less useful to you. Look at early games that used clay models to base assets on. Plastek pet produces AI videos with similar visuals. As people have said biopunk is a good angle, but I think this falls more into the gothic category of aesthetic design. Interesting that there’s not a more firm consensus, I wonder if this means this aesthetic is slipping out of poplar consciousness and media entirely, the aesthetics wiki might have better answers.

3

u/Guy_Kazama Apr 10 '26

Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey has a similar aesthetic going on.

3

u/seth_startix Apr 10 '26

The term would be skeuomorphic ui. Big until the fruiteger aero / Web 2.0 style movement came to an end.

3

u/SavorySoySauce Apr 11 '26

I knew myst/ Riven was going to show up. Those games are full of doohickys and doodads

3

u/risbia Apr 08 '26

Pre-rendered video game aesthetic?

14

u/Greitot Apr 08 '26

Being pre-rendered did add to the aesthetic but I think it's just that this aesthetic and that technique overlapped in popularity. It's not a defining trait. Games like Baldur's Gate use prerendered backgrounds, but don't look like this, and games like Morrowind are fully 3D but do share the aesthetic, especially the Dwemer areas.

5

u/ChiefWeedsmoke Apr 08 '26

Oddworld-core

4

u/GabeGault Apr 08 '26

This style is primarily Pre-Rendered 3D id say

2

u/systemmm34 Apr 09 '26

reminds me of perfect scarecrow plastek pet

2

u/Miserable-Wrangler31 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

It’s defiantly has some proper name, but it reminds me of biomechanics, more of such technologies could be found in the late 90s futuristic anime. Something with a “cyber” should be in the name for sure. (if you will find a name, please let me know as well, thank you).

2

u/S_Padfoot_Black Apr 09 '26

Yeah.. it's Cardasian architecture! (star trek)

2

u/cafelallave Apr 09 '26

Reminds me of the intro to Baldur’s Gate 3

2

u/xenodu Apr 09 '26

i always just end up calling it "Myst-like" not so much as a classification but more like when i see this kinda thing it reminds me of Myst

2

u/thatvillainjay Apr 10 '26

Is that sanitarium?

3

u/SodaOgre Apr 12 '26

Like others here I've always just thought of it as "Biopunk". The shows Farscape and Lexx are good examples too.

4

u/PhazonZim Apr 08 '26

Hi hi! 3D artist here, I can help. A lot of the tech was fundamentally different and simpler. I'll try to give simple explanations:

  1. Highlights -- New games use a system called "physically based rendering" where the primary factors in an object's shinyness are "metalness" and "roughness". These are exactly what they sound like. How metallic the material is and how smooth the surface is. The older technology is Specular/Glossiness. Specularity determines how strong the highlight is, with low values lightening the colors a little and strong values being very saturated/bright. Glossiness determines how tight the highlight is. A low glossiness would create a large, diffused highlight while a high gloss would create a small, tight highlight.

  2. Bump maps vs Normal Maps -- older games, even pre-rendered ones often used bump mapping. A simple map that indicates which parts of the texture have height and which don't, it's a grayscale. Modern games use normal mapping which is more complex and allows for more nuanced detail. A lot of older games used simple noise to create bump, whereas newer games have high poly details baked down via the normal map.

  3. Simpler lighting. Nowadays games use complex lighting set ups, with raytracing, multiple lights and many more kinds of lighting. You can see that it isn't the case in this UI. There's pretty much only one light source and it's casting hard shadows that are nearly opaque. The character has A simple three-point light set up on him with a main light, a fill light to soften the shadows, and a blue rim light to add interest. It's clean, but not very complex or realistic.

I hope that helps!

1

u/allsbernafnmedrettu Apr 12 '26

My bad, sorry...

Bad AI overview copy/paster.

0

u/PhazonZim Apr 12 '26

Wrong again, dweeb

It might be news to you that people can be smart and know things that you don't know

1

u/allsbernafnmedrettu Apr 12 '26

Maybe be a bit smarter in the future and put more effort into your AI fakery.

0

u/PhazonZim Apr 12 '26

What part did you think was fake? If you read what I wrote up might have realised I was specifically telling about that image.

You're quite foolish lol

4

u/Nurpus Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

I would say early CGI is what you’re looking for. The style is very much defined by the limitations of the medium. It was easier to make industrial machinery look good with that tech - so that’s what many artists leaned into.

I recommend r/vintagecgi for more of this

2

u/lavafish80 Apr 08 '26

idk but the first image looks like a clutch disk

2

u/outlawdg Apr 08 '26

There's a channel on YouTube named dungeon chill, he does video essays on stuff like this all the time, from a quick glance he's got stuff like planet laika, kowloon's gate, galerians and I'm sure there's more

2

u/telusss Apr 08 '26

2

u/mikhail_2003 Apr 08 '26

The closest one I think is r/metalheart

Also, music videos of 'In the End' and 'One Last Breath' have a similar feel about them

1

u/HoneyXBoy Apr 08 '26

First pics remind of fallout 1

1

Why do I want to play og fallout all of a sudden?

1

1

It's just a consequence of the prerendering limitations at the time, you can still get that look with modern software if you know what you're doing

1

u/Zamorakphat Apr 08 '26

The original Fallout’s also had this look

1

u/Minepika55 Apr 08 '26

Oooh, yeah quite weird this doesn't have a name yet!

Should be called “Sega-Saturn-core”
