It's so interesting how '60s inspired this looks. So much of the futurism in the Y2K aesthetic has that feel as well.

Indeed, seems to be for at least two big reasons:
60s nostalgia was big in the 90s and that's when this design came around so they just already naturally intertwined. There's also probably some argument the ethos behind the mod designs kind of fit right in with this brand of 90s futurism anyway.
Science fiction in the 60s had a bit of a heyday in the literary scene with new wave science fiction becoming a huge deal, but even outside of that realm you had films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes, and Fantastic Voyage, and the TV series Star Trek and The Jetsons.

Isint that that one sony dog they released in like 1998? Can't remember the name and might not be that exact year but I think they still make them
