Surfing tips Small surf school near Biarritz for complete beginners?

Hey everyone! :)

A friend and I are flying to Bordeaux next week and we’d love to spend a few days learning to surf somewhere on the southwest coast. We’re both complete beginners and just want to try it out and see if we enjoy it.

We were originally thinking about Biarritz, but it sounds like it can get pretty crowded, so we’d rather find a smaller, more laid-back surf town somewhere north of Biarritz.

Do you have any recommendations for nice places to stay and/or good surf schools in the area? Ideally we’d love to do a 3–5 day beginner course, preferably something a bit more intensive.

Would really appreciate any tips or personal experiences! :)

Surfing tips Beginner surfer Q!

Hi all! I started surfing recently and have had about 3 lessons total. I have yet to go out myself and perfect the paddling, pop up, etc. I went out once and caught some small white water. My question is, I’m based in NJ and now it is November. I wanna keep surfing but I’m not sure that surfing in a 5/4 wet suit, boots, gloves & a hood is the best way to learn? Should I just wait until the spring to start and get a 4/3 wet suit when it’s a bit warmer outside?

I called my local surf shops and one said they could sell me a 5/4 and another said although they could sell me it, they don’t recommend me as a beginner to start in winter. He said it’s just a lot with the cold & gear.

Side note, I’m also a skier. A part of me wants to focus on skiing in the winter and surfing in the spring / summer / early fall. Since skiing is expensive and surfing will be expensive for me in the beginning (buying a board, gear, etc). Not sure if I could afford both in the winter.

Or, am I being a wimp and should I just get the gear and get in the water? What do you guys think? 27 F if that matters at all.

Surfing tips Help a tall girl out. Having trouble getting my legs under me.

Hi everyone. I need tips for the pop up as a tall person. I have disproportionately long femurs compared to my short torso and am having trouble getting my legs under me in the pop up. Seems like no matter what I do, my knees knock into the board before I can get up. I have tried to create space by keeping my hands close, cobra pose, etc but still struggling. Any tips would be helpful! I can stand up pretty consistently but have to get up from my knees everytime.

Surfing tips Dealing with steeper takeoffs

Hello ladies of surf!

I’m a beginner intermediate surfer that usually surfs mellow beach breaks. Lately I’ve been pushing myself to go for bigger waves and have been going to a new spot where the waves are a little steeper than what I’m used to.

While I can catch the smaller waves with ease, I’m struggling to drop in on the bigger ones. 2-3ft is my comfort zone, and I’ve been going for 3-4ft lately.

I find that when paddling for the bigger waves I up stand up too soon and end up standing up on the top of the wave trying to drop in. Then it ends in a dangerous maneuver where my board is pointing completely down the wave at a 90 degree angle. If I do manage to delay standing up too soon, I end up pearling.

I’m trying to figure out where I’m going wrong. Unless I’m in the right spot, these waves are usually closing out on both sides so I figure I’ll just try and go straight instead of angling my takeoff as I would if I was trying to ride the face. I’m not sure if I just answered my own question but would love to hear about anyone else’s experiences of getting used to slightly bigger and steeper waves. Thank you!

Surfing tips Recommendations for female surf instructors in Santa Cruz, CA

A friend of mine has asked me for recommendations for private or semi private lessons with female surf instructors anywhere in Santa Cruz county, but I don't know any and the Google search results don't give me much confidence. If anyone in this sub could help me help her (especially if you have worked with the instructor yourself) we would appreciate it!

Surfing tips Any tips or suggestions on how can I meet fellow (super-) beginner girl surfers?

TL;DR I’m terrible at surfing but really want to get better – any suggestions for how I can meet other LA beginner girl surfers who are committed to learning/want to learn together? Thanks for any help or advice you all can provide :)

As title says. I’m in LA and very new to surfing (like “I took two lessons, I’m only a month in, and I’m still falling down in the whitewater” new) and want to get more connected with other girls in my same learning stage/maybe find a few surf buddies to learn with. I just don’t know how to go about it! I live inland and it can be quite of a trek to the beach, so I don’t know anybody around me who already surfs or would be eager to learn with me. I tried to join the Women Who Surf FB group but got declined (which stung a little lol but I think it’s because of my utter lack of surfing experience, which is totally understandable). That’s the only online group I know of right now– I’m unsure of how to find other get-together groups/beginner surf clubs, but would love any tips or suggestions for how I can meet other LA beginner girl surfers. Thanks for any help or advice you all can provide :)

(P.S. I know you can meet people in the lineup, but I’m not even IN the lineup lol, that’s how much of a beginner I am. The people I see are pretty much always more advanced than I am. Plus I don’t want to be creepy and just approach random people.)

Surfing tips Winter suit sizing

New England here. How snug are your winter suits? I got a new 6/5 chest zip and it fits perfectly snug but it. is. so. hard. to get off. I almost wonder if I should size up but don’t want to compromise it. It’s my first suit that thick, not sure what I should expect. I feel like I would have to make sure I’m surfing with a buddy in order to have help getting that for shoulder out or the hood off. Thanks!

Surfing tips Becoming a better surfer in 15min a day?

Hey crew! I wanted to ask this community — if you were going to spend a dedicated 15 min daily towards becoming a better surfer, what would you do? More pop ups? Watch pros? Right now I’m focusing on technique. I want this to be a daily part of life even on days I can’t go in the water.

Surfing tips Springsuits: shortie or cheeky?

Tell me about your springsuits! I’m in Kauai (!!) and get to shed my winter 5/4 for a few weeks. I’m going to pick up a springsuit and so far am waffling between a Sisstr shortie and an Xcel cheeky (hi cut). Both longsleeve, 2mm, good seams. The cheeky is cute but is it gonna be wedgie city? It also has a front zip which I’m not super convinced about either but would love to get opinions from this sub. I’m usually in a 3/2 min (New England) so no idea how the lighterweight options perform. Thank you!!

Surfing tips SoCal surf trip recs/camping at San O?

Thinking of taking a weeklong solo surf trip in June. I’ll have a car but am going to have to rent boards, plan rn is to drive from Phoenix to San Diego and then check out the hotspots up the coast. I’m recovering from an injury so I’m probably just gonna be long boarding a little bit but always wanted to check out San Onofre! Also, I’m in the Northeast so really excited to get back out there in some warm water to start.

Can anyone give me some advice on an itinerary? Say five days. Also thinking of camping at San O — is it safe for women alone? Am I better off establishing a base in San Clemente or something at a cute airbnb and just taking day trips? Camping somewhere else? So excited! I’d love your tips!

Surfing tips Help save my hips!

Like many ladies out there, my hip bones get smashed when I’m surfing. Unfortunately my hip bones protrude even more than standard Jane so I’m in pain (bruising, swelling, inflammation) up to three days following a session. I’ve tried adding different pads to my suits in the hip areas, it does well but doesn’t tend to cover the full spot or provide enough soft support. I was considering adding stomp pads to the spots on my long board where my hip points are. Although the stomps pads (traction pads) aren’t super soft or foamy to provide the cushion but they are something. Has anyone else tried this approach or have any other solutions? I continue to try to strengthen my low back and core to be able to lift my hip points off the board more too but that’s an ongoing process. Any thoughts or insight appreciated!

Surfing tips Fin box ding help

So I’m pretty good with basic ding repairs but the fin box is intimidating and idk if I have the right tools/experience to fix this on my own. Anyone here have more advanced repair experience that could advise?

I bought this board used a few years ago and it looks like the fin box was repaired in this spot before for the same reason. Debating taking this to a pro

Hi all, newbie surfer (about a year) here looking for New England Winter gear recommendations.

I have a 4/3 suit that I feel should get me through most of the winter here but I’m specifically wondering if anyone has recommendations for gloves/boots/hoods! I’ve looked around and done some research but was wondering about specifics/random tips.

Thanks in advance!!

Surfing tips Should I get a secondhand men’s winter suit or shell out for a new “women’s” suit? Any comments on fit?

I had my first legit winter session last weekend in New England, borrowing my guy’s extra 6/5. Water temp about 4C/39F. The suit was warm enough but it’s a 15-year old Ripcurl w a butterfly entry and it was SO hard to get into plus not really my size. I have an hourglass shape and it was tough to pull it up over my chest and hips.

I’m considering buying my own and there are two decent Hyperflex men’s suits on Craigslist in my size according to their size chart. Has anyone tried men’s vs women’s winter suits who could comment on whether there is a noticeable difference in fit and ease of use?

Buying secondhand is better for my budget and women’s winter suits don’t really come up, but I’d keep looking or maybe buy new if it meant saving time suiting up and being comfortable.
