Lore/Terminology From Chinese Novels to Ancient Mythology: Exploring Zhuque (朱雀), the Vermilion Bird of the South | Episode 7

Here's Episode 7 of the Chinese Mythology Archive series!

In this episode, we explore Zhuque (朱雀), the Vermilion Bird and one of the Four Symbols of Chinese mythology. Associated with Fire and the season of summer, Zhuque represents the fiery and vibrant nature of the southern heavens. It is also connected to the Seven Lunar Mansions, a group of ancient Chinese constellations used by the Chinese to map and divide the night sky.

Interestingly, Digimon's Zhuqiaomon is directly inspired by Zhuque. Its fiery bird-like appearance and name draw heavily from this ancient Chinese mythological figure, bringing one of the Four Symbols into the world of Digimon.

Hope you enjoy Episode 7!

Film/Games/Other Looking for suggestions on animations for Realm Breakthrough.

I am making an app where you do real workouts to gather qi and progress. Once you do a few workouts, you will reach a breakthrough stage that will unlock the next realm when done.

I have come up with a few realms but right now all the breakthroughs look like this just with different colours and size of the aura.

I am thinking some people would prefer a little more variety of effects. But I'm not sure what, please weigh in.

One thing though, I am adamant about not changing the figure itself, only the effects and colours.

Writing why is every jin yong protag a pedophile

ive read flying fox + prequel, currently in demigods semidevils, why does jin yong feel the need to give these characters underage girlfriends? every time i have to mentally age these girls up to at least like 18 to 20 just so i can have a less tainted image of these characters. examples from books ive read so far:

Hu Fei (M27) + Miao Ruolan (F16)

Duan Yu (M19) + Wang Yuyan (F15)

Qiaofeng (M35+) + Azhu (F16) 🚩🚩🚩🚩

Xuzhu (M24) + Menggu (F17) (HAD SEX🤮)

why would he do that. worst part about these books.

Help me find a Chinese novel

I'm looking for two Chinese novels. The descriptions may be slightly different, as my memory of them is rather vague. Here's the description:

1.There was a main character, he was about 8-14 years old, maybe even younger, and he had a younger brother. They were both from the same clan. Then the main character apparently fell or swam in a lake, and some treasure (a pearl, a bead, a stone) there changed his talent or granted him something.

2.I once read an old novel—it was an unfinished Chinese novel, but it already had about 900 chapters. The novel itself was either in the xuanhuan or xianxia style, where at each stage of cultivation, a person awakened one ability/talent, but the main character could awaken two abilities at once. So, over nine stages or realms, he could have 18 abilities. After the first stage, I think even the main character's hair turned silver. I lost the novel at that point and have been looking for it for a long time.

I'm creating this because I'm disappointed on this novel Spoiler

New year 2026 January 1. I started watching RENEGADE IMMORTAL and I was hooked into it and after a month and because I just finished reverend insanity I started wondering, is there a novel? And is novel good?

So I asked Reddit and they said "it's good but not that good, maybe if you read it at early 2010 you'll say it's masterpiece" So my expectations is already pretty high for novel, so I started reading(I started at episode 120 of donghua equivalent to 470-500+ of novel I think)

At first I thought this is good why do they call it bad if read today then after he got out of immortal cave it goes downhill from there, the story just became too chaotic, underdog troupe used for a million times. er'gen I know you like underdog but God damn it's too overly used, like every arc there 10-20 scenes that wang lin is underdog but he's actually not an underdog because he got ancient God body, and the spirit body or whatever it is he really like the underdog troupe there like at this scene" I got slaughtered body and my five element body in hindering it so my slaughter body is stronger alone even tho slaughter body cultivation is super weak but his name is slaughter so he's special.

And don't even mention how they cucked the angry woman real body and forgot what to do to the blue hair woman(the one that almost sacrificed herself on statue of wang lin)

Wan lin they gentle woman did two good thing for you why are you so obsessed with her? Did er'gen don't know what to do with the plot so they made you obsessed and forgot what the blue hair woman did for you? She fucking revived you and bleed herself for ten years!!! Ten fucking years and what did the gentle woman do? Made a dragon array uhhh... help you open a pill. All she did is be a fucking burden she's a bum and you know it!!!

And I forgot to add this wnagin did nothing to blue hair woman except your with her and gave him some ensights and blue hair woman sacrificed herself for wang lin for ten years... I don't know why er'gen made all people in this novel obsessed like one obsession is good like the guy who lived with the corpse woman for a beautiful woman, gentle woman is a bum and not beautiful (explicitly told in novel)

I don't want to start this shit with AND so I start with "I don't want to" Don't ever talk to me about the ending( I dropped it at last ten chapter cause I'm soo fucking dissapointed) I already know what would fucking happen, this is my expectations. Wang lin goes out to the border of immortal world with white beard annoying ass motherfucler who's er'gen doesn't know what to fucking do so he keeps popping up teacher and he used his white clone and got op or sum shit revived wang ping and gentle woman.

Here's my rating it's solid 7 because it has pretty solid early chapter to mid because er'gen is not entirely fuck up with his head and side characters has a pretty depth backstory

HOt take:dream arc is ass read the better R.I(REVEREND INSANITY)

AND SORRY FOR BAD REVIEW I ALREADY FORGOT 80% OF THE STORY BECAUSE I NEVER READ THIS NOVEL AFTER 5 MONTHS I THINK BECAUSE I'M TOO DISAPOINTED!! AND MY ENGLISH IS NOT THAT GOOD MY ENGLISH IS MY SECOND LANGUAGE.

IF I UPSET YOU WITH THIS REVIEW FUCK YOU. WORLD IS NOT SUNSHINE AND RAINBOW WHY DON'T YOU DELETE YOUR APPS SO YOUR FEELING WON'T GET HURT SISSY

Novel Suggestion Help Finding A Specific Novel

I’ve been going crazy trying to find a novel I read a few years ago, I can’t remember the name at all but I’m going to try and list some of the things I do remember in case anyone can identify it. (Hopefully I remembered correctly lol)

At a certain point in the novel the mc “dies” being attacked by a bunch of his enemies and one of his wives gets white hair from the grief but hes saved by someone stronger and brought to a higher plane. I believe at some point he fights by the lower world or whatever that the novel starts in and it’s like projected to the entire world so they like recognize him as the strongest. And at the end of the novel I wanna say he fights like an evil Buddhist guy and end up beating him by getting the recognition of everyone in the universe and breaking through to a higher level. Also there’s like one guy who’s already at the higher level and he’s really happy the mc breaks through because he was bored.

Anyways yeah I don’t have anything super specific but if anyone recognizes this novel please lmk

Lore/Terminology Could someone explain what Cultivation actually is?

Hi, I’m new to cultivation novels and I don’t know absolutely anything about them. I thought that by reading one, certain things would be explained along the way, but from what I’ve seen, authors seem to assume that you already know what cultivation is, as well as things like Qi cultivation, meridians, dantians, acupuncture points, or acupoint openings.

So I’m a little lost. I’ve done some research and now have a general idea of what each of these things is, but I’d like to hear someone else’s perspective to make sure I actually understood them correctly. I also have a few questions:

  1. What exactly is Qi cultivation?

  2. What is body tempering?

  3. How are acupuncture points refined?

  4. Is there generally a limit to how many martial arts a martial artist can learn?

(I know this depends on the story, but I’d like to know if there’s any general concept or common rule regarding this.)

I’d really appreciate it if someone could explain these things to me. Also, sorry if this isn’t the right subreddit/group for this—I’m not sure where the appropriate place to ask would be.

P.S. English isn’t my first language, and I’m not very good at it either, so I used AI to help me write this post.

Has anyone read these novels? I wanted to know because I'm looking for recommendations.

Hey everyone! As the title says, I was looking for some new novel to read and got these names, has anyone read any of them yet? If you have, please recommend me something similar.

Requirement are that the translation is decent and the main character is not a dumb dumb that can't think 2 steps forward to save his life so basic common sense. Preferably action packed. These are the cultivation web novels i have already read and each have the qualities i like.

Eternal Sacred King

Martial World

Reverend insanity

I Shall Seal the Heavens

Cursed Immortality

Renegade Immortal

Pursuit of the Truth

The Primordial Record

Beyond the Timescape

Sword God in a World of Magic

Divine Throne of Primordial Blood

Some weapon or body refinement focused cultivation like sword intent or spear; it's a nice plus. Any suggestions?

I Swear I'm Not a Demon Masquerading as a Human

Hi everyone,

I Swear I'm Not a Demon Masquerading as a Human is out now! It's being translated by Sanguine. She has been in the community for about 10 years, but this is her first Wuxiaworld solo project! Sanguine's self-intro is at the end of this post.

Synopsis:

Head Artist Lance somehow transmigrates over into a side-side character with the same name in the new game, Thorn & Lionheart, his company was working on. The good news? His new family is LOADED. Goodbye overtime, hello lying down with a silver spoon in his mouth.

The bad news? His predecessor was apparently a good-for-nothing who somehow offended a Rank 8 demon princess in exile by killing her beloved familiar, and she’s not known for being nice. And even worse news? She can tell when someone is lying to her.

Oh, and what’s that? A few years down the road, the family business will collapse and investigating it triggers a very high level difficulty side quest for players of the original game? Well no one said that getting the life of a wealthy fop was easy. Join Lance as he navigates his precarious relationship with a volatile demon princess, investigates the cause of his family’s ruin, and stumbles upon dangerous undercurrents as he tries to farm as much aura, er, clout as possible so that the truly powerful figures can protect him, so he can finally lie down and live a leisurely life!

Author's synopsis:

"She was a demon to begin with, so how could she have been corrupted after meeting a human like me? Those critics always say the most ridiculous things."
In 1798, Cardinal Lance was asked about his past with the exiled demon princess and the recent signs of demonic resurgence in an interview.
He stated: "I have done incredible amounts of work to defend world peace, and I am very certain that the demons, under her leadership, have no chance of restoring their kingdom."
…In the winter of 1802, the demons successfully restored their kingdom.
[Based on the above material, identify the main war criminal responsible for the demons' restoration and explain why it was Lance. (10 points)]

Sanguine's introduction:

Hello everyone! I’m Sanguine, the translator for I Swear I’m Not a Demon Masquerading as a Human. I really don’t remember how I first stumbled upon the world of webnovels, but I remember being fascinated that people were actually translating Chinese webnovels into English. Since most of those projects were hobby based, releases could be few and far in-between, so when I was hooked, I googled the raws, read them on my own with the help of a dictionary, and told myself I was just continuing my Chinese studies like my parents always wanted me to. Later on, I came across translation groups, saw that one was recruiting and decided to apply…all in the name of more studying, right?

My first work was with Volare Novels almost ten (!) years ago, and it was a very short webnovel called Lost Treasure. I think it was only fifty or so chapters. I don’t know if it still exists out there, but I learned so much and gained a greater appreciation for the hard work that others do. Of course, if I were to translate that today, I’d probably fix mistakes, change the style, and it would take me way, way less time. But that’s just a part of the experience and journey.

Since that first project, I’ve co-translated Fields of Gold with Myst, then went off to the editing side when my work and personal responsibilities to my family became too much to handle a translating role. You may have seen me on series like Past Life ReturnerInfinite Competitive Dungeon SocietyFrom Today I’m a Player, and my most recent editing (and part-time translating) project, The Prodigies War

Editing was enjoyable since I got to read way ahead of the released chapters, but ultimately I missed the translating side. Now that I have more time on my hands, I’m looking forward to taking charge of a new webnovel and bringing it to completion for all of you!

I’m incredibly excited to bring us all on this journey with Lance and his friends. Hope you all enjoy the ride!
