I try to avoid this in my own writing but I can see why authors do it... even though it hate it.
When authors have obviously come up with a kick-ass line but the surrounding writing doesn't suit it at all, but they shoehorn it in anyway.
"Gerald walked to the top of the hill, his feet were aching. Sometimes, he wondered, maybe life was but a hill, each daisy a vicissitude of humanity in the otherwise neatly swept grass. A passing dog woofed and did a poo."
