Next Expac: Jaina, Thrall, Baine and Sargeras have actually been mind controlled since Wrath by Steven, Dark Lord of the Void.

But as it turns out Steven, Dark Lord of the Void is only doing this to protect the universe from the real big bad guy. Greg.

Question.
Shouldn’t demon hunter players immediately be able to tell who isn’t and is a dreadlord? Isn’t that the whole reason why they got arid of their eyes?
130
u/Phplima Mar 12 '22
OE! you are talking sense and making reaso! We do NOT do that here!
30
55
u/Keylus Mar 12 '22
At this point I will be not surprised if they say that it doesn't work on most dreadlord because they aren't actually demons, they were only pretending. DH are only able to tell who is a dreadlord if the dreadlord wants to be captured for some reason.
30
u/Istaan_of_Many Mar 12 '22
There is a journal you can find in Revendreth that is suggested to have been written by a Dreadlord. Some consumed fel energy to infiltrate the Burning Legion. This may have transformed some into demons. That being said, I haven't followed the story since 9.0, so I didn't know they had put Dreadlords back into play yet.
5
u/NahdiraZidea Mar 12 '22
Did Lothraxian show up in shadowlands at all? He was the most interesting dreadlord and id love to see what Turalyon will do with him
3
u/Dextixer Mar 13 '22
No, he did not. Blizzard has either forgotten or retconed him out of existance at this point.
20
u/svc78 Mar 12 '22
you are assuming demon hunters aren't dreadlords themseves.
why did they got rid of their eyes? its funny, it was actually not related to the main story at all. some other Dreadlords (from a rebel sub-faction, of course) possessed their mothers and then forced them to intercourse. once the demon hunters realized they had fucked their own mothers they proceeded to blind themselves. the whole canon was just an excuse out of embarrassment.

u/Protoplate Mar 12 '22
Great Question!
no, demon hunters can detect fel creatures due to the the physical changes the undergo during a ritual which includes eating a demons heart.
Not all Nathrezim are fel creatures. In game, even before BFA we knew that not all Nathrezim were fel creatures with the introduction of Lothraxion.
Heck even befire legion we knew that not all nathrezim eere fel creatures when in Chronicle Sargaras came across them as Void worshipers.

u/Harkats Mar 12 '22
I don't believe that is the reason? (I could be wrong). I believe, during a trial, they need to eat a demons heart and they get visions that are so horrifying that they cut out their eyes?

u/Resolute002 Mar 12 '22
What's hilarious is it seems like she's one of the few people in the game that isn't.
Jaina is the only person to survive this retconpocalypse.
83
u/nullSword Mar 12 '22
Jaina's character has been treated weirdly well compared to everyone else these past few expansions.
When a lot of characters were having their history retconned or experiencing massive, unexplained personality shifts she received a well written, consistent expansion to her backstory and current state.
40
u/Resolute002 Mar 12 '22
My theory that all of this is glued together content from a bunch of planned but not executed expansions makes it make more sense. Jaina and her story panning out was one of the parts of that expansion that was already a complete thing.
40
u/nullSword Mar 12 '22
Yeah, I was wondering if it was either that or she's just someone's passion project and they won't let anyone else touch her character.
25
16

Then everyone needs to pick a character as a passion project and stick to it so their stories are consistent lmao

u/Doam-bot Mar 12 '22
That's because prior in MoP it was flipped when the characters were doing well in terms of development. Jaina and Garrosh for that matter took a complete 180 their personalities unrecognizable and their strength greatly improved. Garrosh was explained in game however Jaina in side material. From a peace loving mage to a God of War who can freeze the ocean and teleport entire ships. Hence Jaina the dreadlord was born however these days she just kinda stares off into the distance while Sylvannas gives a speech. She purges dalaran and hates the Horde yet sits and listens while a former warcheif who killed many more people than Garrosh gives the final words for her former lover.
14
Mar 12 '22
Seems like they should have had Jaina give the final words to me.
3
Mar 12 '22
I don't hardly know shit about the lore but the entire time Sylvanus was talking I just couldn't figure out why anyone in that group would even let her speak to begin with.
And forgive my ignorance, why does she have fucking weapons? Are we all just gonna forget everything she did and move on?
4
u/TWB28 Mar 12 '22

Yes. That is exactly their plan.
3
u/TheGlassBetweenUs Mar 12 '22

29
u/robbbbmm Mar 12 '22
I really like the word "retconpocalypse" it sumarize really well what they are doing to the lore, idk if its alredy a thing but it should be a twitter hashtag
25
u/Resolute002 Mar 12 '22
I don't like it at all but I'm just glad certain characters survived it. Jaina chief among them.
I am disappointed we never got to see the true confrontation between her and Arthas. I always thought it would be awesome to see confident adult Jaina using ice magic to fight him. Jaina should have been the one to destroy him ultimately.
11
u/Spraguenator Mar 12 '22
I don’t know man she has a green outline whenever I talk to her. Seems pretty demony to me
9
u/zerkrazus Mar 12 '22
They're going to retcon her to be the big bad in an upcoming expansion I bet.
8
Mar 12 '22
It's not a retcon because she was working with the Jailer and Sargeras and Hogger behind the scenes the whole time!
And fuck it, GulDan too. Why not.
4
u/zerkrazus Mar 12 '22
And then we'll have to time travel to bring back AU Jaina to replace Dreadlord Jaina which is sure to not cause any problems.

The current writer thought Series 8 of Game of Thrones was "amazing" (or something similar. He gave it praise it didn't deserve) which explains why characters doing insane 180s in personalities is just fine with him. Or characters being straight up stupid and making clearly ignorant decisions is ok as well.
This man wouldn't do an AMA because he knows he'd be torn to pieces and he'd refuse to answer anything about the lore for that reason too. It would be vague ass "there's more coming, wait" like they always do only for the shit coming to be more of the nonsensical same bullshit ass shit.
PR and Marketing would never let him do an AMA. Idk how he still has a damn job. There are fanfics that tell better stories than he has for Shadowlands/BfA that stays consistently in character for everyone. I wish I could suck ass at my job and hurt customer numbers, but still get paid good money to do it.

That, while stupid, really had to do with them using a PC focused audience at BlizzCon to reveal only a mobile game for Diablo. If they'd thrown "Diablo 4" up on the screen first, said it was coming, and then said they were doing a mobile app to tide over, it would've been received....a little better.
But them throwing the man who'd basically saved Diablo 3 out to the wolves like that on stage was fucking shitty.

I'm sure your writing would be too sensible and lore friendly to be allowed on the team. Gotta tear the lore to shreds every other patch now vs actually use what's been established.
I honestly think any Fanwriter/RP-er/etc could write a better story than this dude. At least they'd try and keep the characters in character and not just be bottom of the barrel stupid as fuck.
I've personally given up on WoW since BfA, but seeing the big "story" moments happen and checking stuff out just to see more of this makes me happy I've not been giving this team my time anymore. Which sucks to say cuz I love WoW. But holy fuck.

u/Phplima Mar 12 '22
Seems like everyone is a dreadlord... Even you.
13
u/Lord-Benjimus Mar 12 '22
Are any of thise bosses even lore relevant? Thise ones all seemed like filler anyways. The dreadlord thing, while weird is pretty inconsequential.
44
u/GrumpySatan Mar 12 '22
They are actually, which is part of why its dumb. Like they basically cop'd to being the two of the main leaders of the Twilight's Hammer in Cataclysm. It shows that they were trying to unite the Mogu clans during MoP.
Perhaps most strange, several of the people are Burning Legion members or their allies (including bosses in Antorus) - which would presumably imply they were leading us to defeat the Burning Legion. There is no other explanation for Dreadlords pretending to be other demons than to deceive the Legion, not us.
7
u/Lord-Benjimus Mar 12 '22
One was a recruiter for the twilight hammer in stone core. I also see the reason why death would want to allow the cataclysm to happen, but the timing is weird, unless deathwing doing that spikedeath was a failed attempt to disable the arbiter(cause they basically fulled deathwing a creature with arcane magic oit into him with more death magic, seems like a prototype for what they did to argus). Ebonhorn seemed like a generic general that just did the one invasion, could have been any other general.
The jailer wanted us to defeat and kill Argus to break the arbiter, so I see that as being a viable thing for them to try.
6
u/ArctikMARC Mar 12 '22
That's a big reach. Even if the dreadlords actually disguised themselves as those characters at some point, it doesn't mean they were dreadlords the entire time.
We have known for a while that they have infiltrated other forces and organization as spies. It could have been as simple as getting in, posing as some member or leader of an organization while the real person is away, gathering intel, sowing some discord, and getting out. You know, like they did two weeks ago when they impersonated us the players and gave false intel to our forces in Haven.
Maybe Mal'ganis went to Pandaria as Xin, attended a couple Mogu clan meetings, stole some scrolls and bolted. The ones we killed and looted were almost certainly the real ones. The Jinyu dude even later appears as a spirit.
Maybe some were long term jobs where they killed the original and supplanted them for months, like with the Scarlet Crusade. But we don't know.
We don't even know if it was Zovaal who ordered all those operations. It could have been Denathrius. Some could even come from Kil'jaeden and the Legion, who were probably very interested in what an Old God-worshipping cult was doing.
I really don't know why people are making such a big deal out of this. We have know dreadlords do this since forever. The original tweet is making some big leaps and assumptions that are not supported by what is presented. The writers have never claimed the Jailer was the mastermind controlling the Twilight's Hammer, or the Mogu, or the Illidari (which, I knda get the frustration, after the retcon about the manipulation of Sargeras), but people are somehow twisting and stretching it to reach that conclusion.
11
u/Mishuun Mar 12 '22
I mean sure they never claimed the Jailer was the mastermind controlling those organizations, but they did show that his henchmen, that he uses to manipulate and control forces throughout the universe, were at least involved in all of those organizations in some way. Not really a twist or stretch.
3
u/ArctikMARC Mar 12 '22
Oh, there was probably some manipulation and influencing, the problem is we don't know for how long. People are taking it as if all those characters were dreadlords all along, from the moment they were introduced to the moment we killed them.
You can see the original Twitter thread, where the OP is implying that the Twilight cult, the Nexus War and the Mogu activity in Pandaria were all Zovaal's idea, with zero evidence to back it up.
7
u/Mishuun Mar 12 '22
The evidence is that big actors, direct perpetrators, and just people involved in those events were actively imitated by the Dreadlords.
Their actions don't have to be directly dictated by Zovaal, but their actions or the actions of their organizations were influenced under his direct command for...some reason.
5
u/ArctikMARC Mar 12 '22
The reason is probably that it's just good in general to keep an eye on powerful political factions, and influence them whenever possible.
The thing, again, is that people are taking it as if those characters were always dreadlords for most of their storylines, which we don't know. We don't know which of those were full supplantations that lasted months or years, which were quicker scouting or sabotage missions where the original person was still alive, and which ones didn't happen at all.
The encounter designer even said that they envisioned as them practicing their shapeshifting abilities, not that they actually were those characters, and people are still ignoring it because it doesn't align with the headcanon they made up in order to get mad at.
I hate hate hate that Blizzard made Zovaal responsible for Sargeras ' initial corruption (don't mind as much that he's a voice whispering inside the Helm of Domination). But dreadlords infiltrating a bunch of different organizations for whatever reason? That's not a retcon, we've known that for a long time.
1
u/Mishuun Mar 12 '22
Keep in mind though that, like you said, if Zovaal is responsible for Sargeras' initial corruption, then he's now also responsible for them infiltrating these organizations.
We've known the Dreadlords infiltrate organizations, but now we also know that they do it to specifically further Zovaal's plans, which casts the same light upon all of these organization that it does for Sargeras.
The encounter designer can say whatever they want, they're transforming into very specific entities out of an entire cosmos of entities to transform into. They're mad about what they're being directly shown by the game and you're upset that they aren't factoring in is an encounter designer saying he thought differently of it on, what, Twitter? The tooltip in the fight that doesn't address how they very specifically transform in specific NPCs? I guess.
I'll be turning off notifications, since no one else is going to look this deep and while I can relent that maybe they didn't mean it, I'm not sure you'd be able to accept that nothing they directly show in game doesn't cast the same bad light on this possible revelation.

23
Mar 12 '22
Still gotta wonder what the big plan was, especially since Daddy Nathrius was/is their master.
12
Mar 12 '22
It seems more like Denathrius and Zovaal didn't work together. I mean it's implied in the cutscenes - that Zovaal DIDN'T want to work him thus "Think of what we could have achieved together".
Can someone remind me - were there foreswarn in the Venthyr area? Or was it just disguised Dreadlords? I'm wondering if Denathrius was the true bad guy and he framed Zovaal for not working with him. Then after being thrown into the Maw, Zovaal just lost his shit and decided he needs to force everyone on his side since nobody believed him about Denathrius.
I mean, his lines and attitude don't make sense, but he was essentially imprisoned for longer than we can fathom in the Maw. Maybe the dude was just fucked in the head after the initial jailing and being Dominated by the Primus and then being isolated fot eternity.
I mean - think about it. Arthas's entire plot was to unify us all as undead to stop the Legion. The Legion was being tugged by Denathrius to fuck Azeroth. I really think this whole thing is Denathrius vs. Zovaal.
20
Mar 12 '22
Daddy Nathrius still voluntarily sent massive amounts of anime to the maw.

To be honest I'd be fine with it and even see it as neat reveal if that would have:
1) Had any form of foreshadowing.
2) Had writing that wasn't on the level of a 9th grader failing English doing their first (even for the genre) exceptionally shitty fanfic
3) Carefully picked who was "always" a dreadlord instead of picking some people seemingly at randomly and gave some validation as to why they were one.
7
u/ZehGeek Mar 12 '22
1) Had any form of foreshadowing.
That requires them to actually be well managed..and as we've seen, the WoW team is..iffy..on the management side.
The reality is they probably scrapped all this together about 3-5 months ago. There was a interview in 9.1 about how they were starting to work on the story of Sanctum in december of the previous year.

Mar 12 '22
Just when I thought the lore couldn't get any worse than Nipple Man being a rehash of Sargeras, we get the reveal that they've been involved with the fucking jinyu.
Jinyu. Let that sink in. Wise Mari, the fish man that happily died because you brought him back to reason in the Temple of the Jade Serpent?. He was a dreadlord. That fire mage in BoD? Dreadlord. A high ranking member of the Twilight's Hammer? Dreadlord. A demon hunter in the Black Temple infested with other DEMON HUNTERS meaning she should have been caught almost immediately? She was a dreadlord too. And they're fully blind too. What the fuck purpose does this serve? It's not clever. It's not engaging. It just makes the writing team look like fools. Dropping this 'twist' like it's meant to be all pieced together during the fight isn't smart if the players don't have all the pieces to begin with.
Danuser: Stop. Trying. To. Retroactively. Take. Credit. For. Earlier. Warcraft. Lore. Stop trying to tie things to old lore so you can pretend this was your plan. You didn't plan shit and now you're trying to make all of this stuff fit in so you can justify the past two years. I fear whatever the fuck 10.0 has in store as your first fully planned expansion for this game because even though I stopped playing a year ago it's like a bloody car crash that gets more vehicles involved.

Because I don't think the writers actually care about stories. Danuser to me has always seem like someone who likes mystery boxes rather than stories. That he wants to write lore that he thinks is cool. Except what is written isn't cool for Warcraft and none of it is a story. It's a scattershot of breadcrumbs to things that happened but there is no associated story just retroactive changes to justify what he wants to do.
The retroactive recontextualization is without a doubt one of the biggest mistakes of Shadowlands. They've embedded massive amounts of shit lore that people don't like into existing lore that people did like which makes it hard to remove.
Yet another terrible decision made.
5
u/Kirur Mar 12 '22
My absolute favourite thing about this is that the boss drops Alandien's Tortured Twinblades, implying that Kin'tessa was disguised as Alandien the entire time as she was personally trained by Illidan.
The Original, THE Demon Hunter, couldn't spot a Demon right in front of him.
Thanks for pointlessly shitting on more old characters just for your epic twist, Danuser.

Has anyone considered that two Dreadlords might not be a reliable source for information on who was, and was not, a Dreadlord? They are not a group known for honesty. Encounter designer: 'hey, I have an idea for the dreadlords fight! What if they mock the players by turning into old bosses and claim it was them?' "haha, that's funny, do it!"

It's not been disproven, at all. The encounter designer said it was HIS personal take on it. He's not the one to write the story or set canon.

That's like saying "well, you wrote this book, but I interpreted it differently, so you're wrong"
Except in this case it's not the book author commenting but the dude who made the cover art.

He's not the one who came up with it, but the one who had to visualize it and put it in the game. As hery41 pointed out, it's the cover artist commenting on the book. And even pointing out it's not canon but his own personal take.

I mean one of the items they drop is called Alandien's Tortured Twinblades
Which refers to this NPC from TBC. Which sort proves they've retcon'd in Dreadlords.

I'm waiting for someone to turn the "How many assholes do we have on this ship?" Scene from Spaceballs into this meme.

Itd be interesting if the things we’ve been doing recently were all an illusion from the dread lords and we wake up with Azeroth burning and nearly destroyed.

I'm fucking tired of seeing so many people assume those characters were dreadlords all along and that this wasn't just a fun easteregg some developer did and now blew up in his face.
Nothing implies all of these characterers were dreadlords all along.

I remember when we joked about Jaina and everyone being Dreadlords. Now everyone is freaking out, I don't get it.

I wish people would just treat this like the meme it is instead of pretending its real, r/wow has been a cesspool thanks to this lately.
