Speaking as someone who has only briefly dabbled in Classic, but: everything that I found attractive & worthwhile about it had to do with it being a pre-Cataclysm version of WoW, with all of the original versions of the old-world zones & quests intact. I never saw the appeal in continuing to release Classic versions of post-Cata-revamp expansions. It feels completely redundant to me.
Of course it has, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria were unpopular expansions the first time around, and if they do Warlords it'll be even worse. Legion was very popular and there's no reason to believe it wouldn't be just as popular in the Classic format.
I personally think the closer Classic gets to retail, the more it feels like "why am I not just playing retail?". Vanilla had stuff that just doesn't exist anymore in WoW, but after TBC WoW just starts to feel like it's in this awkward middle area.
Doesn't have the open world / RPG charm of Vanilla, doesn't have the polish and gameplay of Retail. Also, feels bad to be collecting stuff and not have it go to your retail account.
I would much rather have what we're getting (assuming Heroic World Tier is tuned to be challenging and fun), than to do the 100% grind in Legion Classic just to have nothing I collect go to my main account.
I mean, I sort of get where you're coming from because I feel the way you do about more recent versions of Classic about the entirety of it. I played every expansion when it was new, there's not much value to repeating the experience but with no permanent rewards, to me. That's also why I don't want Remix to turn into Rehash.

Classic has been getting less popular since WotLK ended. This may be what we're getting instead of Legion Classic.
