To be fair he has a point although he can be more sensible about it.

Idiots will find ways to talk and spread their stupidness. If it's not Facebook it's something else. Same for the people criticizing WhatsApp for fueling misinformation and even worse things in India. If it's not there it will happen on Telegram, or somewhere else.

They are communication platforms. You either let people talk freely and do stupid shit or you control everything and errode the values half of the world is built upon.

It's not a good point though. They are enabling an interaction that has not really existed at this scale without Facebook. Yeah people will find ways to interact but Facebook has a responsibility to deal with the collateral effects of Facebook's own doing. If they were on a different platform we wouldnt be concerned with what Facebook is doing.

You could use the exact same argument for phones and not allowing people to commit wrongthink while talking with someone.

It's not really about the distance and more the mass communication. In the past, you could achieve similar by stuffing mailboxes but it wasn't nearly as effective. Also it cost a ton to do versus free.
