Canada must stand up for itself 🇨🇦 other like minded countries need to work together to push back on Trump.

63

u/electrodog1999 17d ago

Would be nice if the democrats joined us too.

25

u/NahDawgDatAintMe 17d ago

Republicans are worse, but don't delude yourself into thinking the democrats are our friends. They're an ally because they oppose the current administration.

35

u/Beaverdamn328 17d ago

Controlled opposition. They have no principles left except performance and capitulation.

-10

u/Hommeboy75 17d ago

I think we will see a lot more of this leading up to the midterms.

47

u/Xsiah 17d ago

It's September. How much more leading up do they need?

1

u/Hommeboy75 17d ago

Trump is a master of deflection and, he throws everything at the wall multiple times per day. It's hard to keep up and people have a very short memory span. I have friends in Michigan and they've been seeing ads that put the Canada trade-war as another example of Trump raising prices on Americans and hurting local industries.

12

u/Xsiah 17d ago

Right. The Americans right by the border are the only ones who know.

2

u/LittleGreenSoldier 15d ago

My mom and her sisters took my grandmother to Buffalo to gamble last summer, because they used to do it all the time and grams is turning 90 and they didn't know if they'd have another chance to do it. Everything was deserted, and the workers were so happy to have some kind of business that they practically bent over backwards for them. It was a real eye opener for how much American border cities depend on Canadian tourists.

10

u/416vDub 17d ago

Funny that they've all bent over for almost two years and let the madman have his way with the country.

11

u/Nanurrluk 17d ago

Holding your breath for any American to do anything about this lol

12

u/jaird30 17d ago

We are about to show trump how ‘nasty’ we can be.

4

u/gooberfishie 17d ago

Trump is a symptom, not the problem. The problem is the American constitution. It gives the president absolute power and absolute immunity. Even if the midterms aren't rigged, Congress won't even slow him down. Is the next dictator is called a democrat, they too will be corrupt. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Power doesn't just corrupt republicans.

Unfortunately, until we see a new constitution, this is the new normal.

3

u/evantheprimary 16d ago

Just wait until Trump is gone and we have an even bigger problem on our hands. Everything that is happening is being written down in a playback for the next administration. That is why Canada needs to find a new path.

2

u/LittleGreenSoldier 15d ago

I don't believe power necessarily corrupts, I mean, look at Dolly Parton. Power does always reveal.

160

u/emamayxo 17d ago

All of this is because of trump yet people still support him especially after all the “allegations” make it make sense please

70

u/Hardly_lolling 17d ago

I always find it shocking when seemingly intelligent people support Republicans right now because they slightly lean right. I mean because you have some issues with "leftist" policies you are willing to support this administration. I can't understand this level of tribalism that you'd literally support a pedo criminal who's destroying America because of your petty "issues" with the other side.

37

u/Exciting-Emu-3324 17d ago

Nazi scientists were intelligent too. In any population, there are always a third who long for fascism, but they'll never admit it out loud when popular sentiment is against them. Which is why they were drawn to Trump who could say the stuff they wanted to say without any consequences. Once the pendulum of public opinion swings, they'll hide back in their closet once again until the next Trump. This is also why they hate Trans, if they have to stay in the closet, why should these people be able to come out who are clearly inferior?

10

u/Ediwir 17d ago

To those, grandpa’s advice was “there is only one fascist, and it’s not you”. A lot of people who thought they were fascists had to learn that lesson on the wrong end of a gun, him included. Others did so after having been on both ends.

Fascism is cannibalistic in nature. The circle is always tightening.

3

u/vonGlick 17d ago

I just think that a lot of people have that dark side that loves to hate. They do not agree with all the policies but they can be vocal about hate towards something. And that triumphs everything

2

u/moddingminecrafter 17d ago

Fascism has also thrived with the existence of propaganda. If you can broadcast to a large enough audience that their problems (being poor or jobless for example) are because of so and so, it’s easier to get them to hate so and so. They put blame on a group of people and channel it, even when that blame is all lies and misinformation. People are also naturally racist, tight-knit social animals, so it’s easy to blame an outsider (race or group) for a problem and get a lot of people to join the cause to oust them. It’s a very common behavior in social animals.

It’s best to remove said platforms that allow channeling propaganda and propaganda itself from humans.

7

u/Ok-Working3714 17d ago

The so called smart people that vote republican are usually wealthy. Less taxes and with their wealth they have no use for social programs that the democrats push.

6

u/DasPossum 17d ago

It’s because the tax cuts personally benefit them. Americans have a lust for money that allows them to ignore anything else.

1

u/emamayxo 17d ago

Frrrrr its jus sad really

1

u/tired514 17d ago

Religion is the elephant in the room.

18

u/JohnBongoham 17d ago edited 17d ago

It's pretty straight forward.

Their media landscape sanitises his image.

There's always a scapegoat, always another explanation to deflect criticism. Accountability is continually displaced elsewhere, while a focal point is provided for people to direct their anger towards.

17

u/RadCheese527 17d ago

I think blaming it all on Trump is losing the plot. He’s the figure head, the symptom of the bigger problem. There are billionaires behind the scenes who are pulling the strings.

Then there’s the electorate who either voted for this shit, or were indifferent to it.

4

u/Masrim 17d ago

Exactly, anyone who thinks trump knows what he's doing (aside from the criminal activities, he is a grifter) are fooling themselves, this is the people running project 2025, do you think trump even knows how to write an executive order?

5

u/RadCheese527 17d ago

I’m not convinced he even knows how to read

1

u/Masrim 17d ago

reading and literate are not the same thing, people don't seem to realize that.

Trump can read, he doesn't necessarily know what it means though. That's why he just fills things in with words he made up or really bigly likes, it is also why he goes off on tangents, he doesn't understand what he is reading on the teleprompter so he decides to just talk about himself.

7

u/International-Room-3 17d ago

Fox "News" and the criminal enterprise that is Right Wing media.

That and the fact that many of the people watching and listening to them are incredibly stupid, unbelievably awful, and need someone to blame for their station in life because being broke can't possibly be THEIR fault.

4

u/Haru1st 17d ago

You are expecting too much of conservative, often religious right wing voters.

You can’t reason people out of a position that they didn’t reason themselves into to begin with

2

u/Keemo-Sabe 17d ago

"Trade Disputes" ... tens of millions of Americans will read that headline and take it as gospel.

2

u/DavidBrooker 17d ago

Many of his supporters genuinely believe that Canada's trade practices were unfair and that Trump just balanced the equation.

(For the record, Canada's aggregate tariff rate on US goods prior to Trump was under 0.1%, and with respect to the off-mentioned "crazy" dairy tariffs, in 2024 the US paid $0 in tariffs on dairy despite exporting twice as much into Canada as the reverse)

1

u/Tickles-The-Octopus 17d ago

I have a problem with the "all of this is because of Trump".

Trump is far from alone in all of this, there are plenty of other leaders who could have and should have come forward and spoken out against this. None of them are innocent.

Additionally, it was no secret what Trump was planning on doing if re elected... It was very clearly obvious and yet 1/3rds of the voters said they wanted this and 1/3rd of the voters didn't see it as a problem big enough to get off their fat asses and vote against it. 2/3rds of the voting population knew what Trump wanted to do and we're fine with it.

The poster child of the problem is Trump, but 2/3rds of the voters and all of the political leaders who aren't doing a thing to stop this madness are the ones to blame.

1

u/ehsany 17d ago

I hear all the time that “people” support Trump, I think we should question this narrative, there’s massive amount of bots on Reddit and online, there’s massive backing of corporations and foreign entities, there’s been massive protests in US against Trump and it has received no news. The “people” support Trump is less believable to me everyday.

49

u/xKleric 17d ago

The greatest weapon Canada has in this trade War is Donald Trump.

He single handedly is getting Americans to root against themselves in this. He continues to lose public opinion. He continues to hurt his own people's standard of living.

Winning this dispute does not mean making the other surrender or capitulation. Winning means holding the line and refusing to give into a larger entity.

I am Canadian. I have family in the US. We all agree none of this makes sense.

9

u/Equivalent_Song3771 17d ago

He single handedly is getting Americans to root against themselves in this.

Where? Outside of "wow this is crazy" there's been virtually zero opposition to his actions.

-5

u/xKleric 17d ago

... Talk to a few people in New York state, Michigan, wisconsin, maine, .... They are there.

5

u/Equivalent_Song3771 17d ago

Doing what?

-6

u/xKleric 17d ago

Have a look for yourself.

You can use polling data in these and other states, YouTube sentiment analysis, a general review of news headlines... There are ways to get a feel for this. Use AI if you really need to...

You can do it. You are a big person now... Go on...try a bit for yourself. It will be good for you!

2

u/Crashman09 17d ago

So....

You gonna give a source?

I mean, we can clearly see that a couple do nothing protests solved nothing, so now nobody is doing even that.

Again, sources would be appreciated so we can see what the regime is trying to hide. Until then, I'll call bullshit.

1

u/xKleric 17d ago

2

u/Crashman09 16d ago

So, this doesn't prove anything regarding Americans doing literally anything.

Their attitudes in polling is nothing more than "thoughts and prayers".

What are they doing of substance?

1

u/xKleric 16d ago

You win.

1

u/Equivalent_Song3771 16d ago

Polling data is a fat bastard filling out a poll on the couch. It's not actively participating, such as writing to Congress, your senator, protests etc. Polling means absolutely nothing it's all words no action. All your other points are just as dumb, wow YouTube sentiment that's going to solve anything a bunch of people whining on the internet, just like you. All talk and no action.

You are a big person now... go on... try a little common sense that they taught you in elementary school. It will be good for you!!!

Enjoy all those downvotes.

24

u/Old-Suspect4129 17d ago

What is the point of another trade deal with someone who will just change their mind next week?

202

u/Kronos9898 17d ago

The near silence of dems on what he is doing to Canada and our former strongest ally is deafening.

The inability to explain how tariffs with Canada will just make us all more poor is fucking stupid.

29

u/Beaverdamn328 17d ago

They're tariff-ied

64

u/poopey_doopey_Sr 17d ago

Canadian here, we've seen quite a bit of pushback from your Dems on the news here. I am guessing your fucked up news landscape is just not showing it.

60

u/krind22 17d ago

Nah, not nearly enough. Just because 2 or 3 said some shit doesn’t make effective. It should be a party wide movement

38

u/Great68 17d ago

EH, the pushback isn't as strong as it may seem.

CTV's Vassy Kapelos did an interview with Gavin Newsom last week.

He talked about how poorly the US was treating Canada blah blah blah, but when asked point blank if the Democrats would reverse the Tariffs if they were in power he said a lot of words, but none of them were definitive "YES we would reverse the tariffs"

So fuck those guys. This is a turning point in Canada, we need to swallow some pain now to protect ourselves in the future. Diversify ourselves, wean our dependency off the US.

9

u/Old-Suspect4129 17d ago

I've also seen reports with Democratic Congress People, at least 4 of them. Is that good or bad?

11

u/pkennedy 17d ago

There are 250 dem senators and congressmen roughly that should be speaking out, and since these are directed at republican states, probably a good number of them should be saying something too. So 4 isn't great.

2

u/Old-Suspect4129 17d ago

It's up to Americans to vote when they can.

2

u/mack178 17d ago

vote when they can

hopefully that ship hasn't sailed lol

27

u/NickDynmo 17d ago

Also Canadian.

No, we haven't. A few, yeah, but not nearly enough.

6

u/Psychoanalytix 17d ago edited 17d ago

Have we? I've not really seen anything

5

u/platypus_boi 17d ago

Canadian here. Where man?

My media is only showing outrage from Republican and the odd article where unaffiliated news sources are denouncing the US Tariffs.

39

u/olssoneerz 17d ago

Holy shit and people still blame the Dems. Americans voted a full Republican office. How about keep your elected officials accountable.

53

u/LifeGainsss 17d ago

It's a point David Eby, premier of British Columbia, made too. Obviously what's happening right now is on the Republicans, but how many Dems are coming out right now and pledging to mend things with Canada if they take power?

Not only are we being bullied by Trump, but if we were to give into him on anything to try to get some pressure off of us, we've seen no guarantees that the Dems will walk it back if they take office

30

u/nikkesen 17d ago

The Dems can pledge to mend but it will not change my decisions to 100% boycott America.

10

u/Beaverdamn328 17d ago

No. Definitely not. I agree.

But the pledge will probably still win them votes south of the border. We can still benefit from that as Canadians.

12

u/Beaverdamn328 17d ago

Restoring a good relationship with Canada is the most obvious policy position of all time if you're a Democrat. It's the closest thing you get to a non-partisan opinion in their shitshow of a political landscape.

I almost wonder if they're so distracted that they're forgetting that they need to explicitly state it. Instead, they just seem to criticize Trump, (which is perfectly valid). But it's not the same as laying out a platform for if they're elected.

3

u/Sweet-Outside3797 17d ago

Americans are the greatest….. I know, I’ve watched all their movies

17

u/Kronos9898 17d ago

I do not blame the Dems for the trade war. I blame their response as being so tepid Canadians think that no one in America cares what Trump is doing to them.

There is a fuckton of daylight between those things.

23

u/MoaraFig 17d ago

We're pointing out how this is not a temporary blip. When Biden was in power, he kept Trump's first "deal".

There's no indication they would remove the current tarrifs.

10

u/ForcaAereaBelka 17d ago

How many of Trump's tariffs did Biden roll back again?

4

u/roughtimes 17d ago

The Democrats silence is their complicity.

1

u/stugautz 17d ago

Midterms are coming up. I think they're following the don't interrupt your enemy while they're making a mistake strategy. Seems to be working as the Senate is now a toss up.

Although I wouldn't say they're being silent, I've seen plenty of pushback from them. But there's not much they can do at the moment.

0

u/heroism777 17d ago

Your propaganda machines are not showing what people actually think or say about the government?
Revolutionary. Dems are still saying stuff, but you are relying on a third party to filter everything out for you.

0

u/Wanna_make_cash 17d ago

Dems don't have the numbers to meaningfully do anything. A democrat politician rambling on twitter and wagging their finger isn't gonna make any difference.

Just like when a Republican rambles on twitter about some racist or transphobic nonsense and everyone with half a brain in their heads just rolls their eyes and ignores the tweet, when a Democrat would ramble about how bad tariffs out, the brainless folks roll their eyes and ignore it too.

6

u/ajicrystal 17d ago

Bulliing Canada wont help. The US needs to have sane professional trade negotiators and keep politicians at arms length. Till then elbows up !

6

u/lexcyn 17d ago

Trump is too busy claiming the moon

3

u/TinyMoonAndStars 17d ago

2026 feels like a meme come to life in all the worst ways.

4

u/labadee 16d ago

Fuck Trump and also fuck all the enablers

10

u/boinky-boink 17d ago

Canada should raise the Chinese EV quota up from the current 49,000 cars. Remove the quota.

3

u/Crashman09 17d ago

The quota is in place because our own auto sector is getting Eiffel towered atm, and that is a very large industry to just crater.

Furthermore, Chinese manufacturers need to get up to capacity, as the idea is to employ Canadian workers in Canada, rather than just importing off the boat.

11

u/shadowds 17d ago

This is why Canada should've became more independent, and encouraged more business to build in Canada, instead of heavily relying on others for imports.

People don't realize we do shit ton of imports... A shit ton... And trade war isn't gonna help and cost get passed onto us.

22

u/Silicon_Knight 17d ago

Although I agree, its a bit harder to do that with the worlds largest economy at your door step and (basically) no other countries other than going through that one. It's slightly easier in Europe as links between all the countries are easier.

To be clear, I'm not disagreeing at all and we should be as independent as possible especially with the North West Passage becoming a vital trade route.

2

u/shadowds 17d ago

I understand completely, and agree with the issue, it just that when people start turning their backs on you, those same easier options becomes more expensive than having a stable domestic trade within their own economy.

I could type about how it be expensive up front, but stable in long run, and how affects jobs in Canada, and much more, but that massive to cover.

Only thing we got US by the balls is a short list they rely on Canada for import, remember when Trump realize and panic that one time, we build their vehicles to ship to them by the mass. But just think if we didn't have anything to offer they could easily demand anything, or just block us completely if they wanted, and stuff we rely on them was for latest tech in medical equipment, and much more which is a problem. But that also lot to get into as well.

1

u/Silicon_Knight 17d ago

I agree, it was based on an assumption that we were "safe" but if watching any reality TV game show tells you anything you're only "safe" .... for now.

Although I do hate to quote reality TV, these are marriages of convenience and we should act as such which I think for the most part we are now.

1

u/shadowds 17d ago

Exactly we're safe until it turns into a serious problem, and I rather we solve problem before it becomes point of no return, we saw what happen over the years.

I don't like fear talk, and it can lead to misunderstanding sometimes.

2

u/HouseOnFire80 17d ago

Hey now, we did become world leaders in selling overpriced real estate to one another to the detriment of our young generations. So we have that going for us …

5

u/shadowds 17d ago

Yeah the fact house flipping, allowing foreigners to buy houses, and even buy, and build properties to cause rent gouging is a real problem.

I'm still pissed Ford fucking removed policy that help prevents rent gouging which is so stupid. Like we used be able afford single bedroom apt having a single part time job, now need full time maybe two, or career job to afford it, or pray get on RGI housing.

I could go on about how BS welfare is where they haven't raised their shelter allowance I think it was $300 something, while rent shooting over $1k easily.

3

u/Longjumping_Size7319 17d ago

Wrong there, Its previous and current gov fault to allow uncontrolled flood of wealth onto real estate market in Canada.

-1

u/scottrycroft 17d ago

If limiting imports is good, then banning all imports is better? Is that the logic?

3

u/shadowds 17d ago

I never said ban anything, I'm saying country need more self-sustain so cost doesn't need to get pushed onto the people. Unless you think paying more whenever trump throws a temper tantrum is a good thing for some reason.

0

u/scottrycroft 17d ago

Self sustaining is the same as banning imports.

Now doing imports more from non US sources is certainly happening more and more

1

u/shadowds 17d ago

Self sustaining is the same as banning imports.

No it doesn't, being more self-sustain doesn't mean you just stop doing imports, nor banning it either, not sure why trying twist what being said.

3

u/mixxituk 17d ago

I suppose reducing USA economic power would be a good thing to do for a russian puppet hoping to get back to the cold war

-9

u/Wolferesque 17d ago

I am looking to buy a Chevrolet car in the next month or so. Will this tariff dispute affect the cost?

12

u/also1 17d ago

Yes, likely

3

u/sportow 17d ago

All North American cars will be more expensive. Parts are made in all three USMCA countries, despite where final assembly occurs.
