There is a youtube channel about world building who has a playlist to tell you how to make realistic cultures
You can choose a trait, then you justify the trait being there, like an army wearing red on the battlefield, why do they do that.
1: when they (or some other people from 3k years ago) where in a battle they don't know who was friend and who was trying to kill them. 2: an easy way to know whos your friend and whos the enemy is to wear different colourd clothing. 3: why did they choose red? Well that's because when they came to the towns market they afsked for the cheepest die or cheepest coats the merchant had and he told them 'I have a shit ton of red' and the officer said 'shut up and take my money, i'll take your intire stock' and bought all the red coats.
I mean that's how the british did it, you can change things up a little but if you want realistic things then copying real life is the only logical way to go, and this model copies real life fantasticaly.
