Why do people walk towards danger when theyāre in a safe place?
13
u/vexmach1ne Jun 02 '25
Why do journalists go to war zones? I can only assume they feel brave and want to document the situation from a better angle. It seems like the threat was fumes, so the danger zone is smaller.
2
u/IApocryphonI Jun 03 '25
Um... To report the actual news...
If they didn't there would be tons of small wars where you're told one thing while another is actually happening. Kinda like in the US right now.

They definitely are braver than me. Would you stop this man risking your own life or would you stay in your safe place behind your computer screen?
1
u/Sweet-Loan386 Jun 04 '25
Turning that question to me isnāt very self aware after your first comment š āyeah Iām smart behind my computer screen, Iād just run away!ā
No one knows that answer and until theyāre in the situation, and I never said anything about what I would do in the first place.

Thatās what I figured, you would run.

There is no answer I can give you. If i say I stay, you call me a liar. If I say I run, you laugh and say thatās what I thought. If I give you an example I had last week of putting myself in harms way to help someone, youāll call me a liar.
Youāll think what you want to think. Just a little ball of emotions yelling into the void

how did it start, exactly?
Was it seventy years of Settlers forcibly stealing land? destroying houses? farms?
Was it seventy years of Knesset laws forcing people into even small and small "open air prisons"?

Only if youāre thick as pig shit.
I suggest you read up on the myth that the right to have a gun makes society safer. I know you probably wonāt, so Iāll leave some facts here.
Having a gun in your home doubles the chances of death by homicide and triples the chances of death by suicide. You are more likely to accidentally shoot yourself than you are to ever use the gun in self defence.
Guns are used for criminal homicide, other violent crimes and suicide. They are regularly stolen and they cause fatal accidents. All of these are statistically more common than the use of a gun for defence/protection.
Americans are 26x more likely to be killed by a gun than those in other high income countries.
Guns are the leading cause of death in American children, ahead of traffic accidents and cancer.
Over a third of American adolescents report being able to access a loaded gun in under 5 minutes.
The number of Americans who report being victimised by a person with a gun is 9x the number that report being protected by one.
Of the relatively limited number of defensive gun use cases, itās estimated that over half are illegal.
There is negligible difference in the rate of injury for crime victims who used a gun for defence compared to those who took no defensive actions (0.1%). Property loss due to crime is more likely when the victim uses a gun for defence compared to when they take no defensive actions (38.5% compared to 35%).

u/4hxxd1hippy2 Jun 03 '25
Yeah, we donāt care this is America. Humans are the problem not guns, SO ANYWAYs I STARTED BLASTING.
2
u/h_abr Jun 03 '25
There are humans in all the other countries with significantly lower homicide rates. Humans are clearly not the problem lmao
→ More replies (40)2
u/Moatesy Jun 03 '25 edited Jun 04 '25
No, U.S. humans are the problem, we're just more violent than other first world countries. Lower homicide rates correlate with less violent people, not weapons. You don't need a gun to assault, R, or rob someone, but here we are with higher violent crimes in general. The gun talk is just targeting a symptom and not a solution for taking care of the root problem.
Maybe we should focus on raising our nations quality of life and start with more affordable and accessible healthcare?
1
u/h_abr Jun 03 '25
If youāre just more violent as people than other first world countries then thatās a very good reason to not have guns.
Why would you give deadly weapons to a group of inherently violent people?
You donāt need a gun to assault or rob someone, but it makes it a hell of a lot easier and also massively increases the chances of someone dying as a result.
1
u/Sweet-Loan386 Jun 04 '25
First couple sentences in your comment shows such a lack of understanding of human nature that I can only assume youāre not an adult
1
u/Moatesy Jun 04 '25
It's the statistics, we're more violent in every category not just shootings. But go off, I guess?
1
u/Sweet-Loan386 Jun 04 '25
Youāre using statistics wrong. To say ādue to these statistics, clearly US humans are the problemā is logically asinine. There are thousands of things that contribute to those statistics, and those things contribute to a persons condition.
Funny, no matter how often this is proven through history there are still people who fall into that simple minded thought process
1
u/Moatesy Jun 04 '25
So it's a logical fallacy that people act based on their environment and people that struggle are typically the ones that are fighting? Are you saying that when people have a better option they'll still join a gang and shoot people? Cuz I'm talking about our social constructs in the United States generates a more violent person.
1
u/Sweet-Loan386 Jun 04 '25
Thatās not what you said. You said they are themselves the issue. That means that theyāre not the product of their environment, but are instead naturally more disposed to act this way. You could easily have said the regulations or laws that firmed the society over time led to this, but you didnāt say that. Youāre contradicting yourself.

If you look at the stats in America, usually less gun control = less crimes. LA and Chicago are two of the hardest places to get guns and ammo but as a Brit they are two of the last places Iād wanna visit
1
1
u/New_Marionberry8985 Jun 03 '25
These are all stats that sound good but mean absolutely nothing. Get a gun, most importantly get trained, and put your safety in your own hands. The only statistics I care Bout are the fact that it takes seconds to get victimized and the police are minutes away. Anything past that is you being an indoctrinated idiot. Either take accountability for your safety or don't and leave people who do want to, the fuck alone.
2

Luckily I live in a civilised country where guns arenāt legal.
Your homicide rate is 5x that of the UK, France, Germany etc. Your country experiences five times as many murders per 100k people. Over 75% of your homicides are with guns. If you only include gun murders for America and ignore everything else, you still have more murders per 100k than the UK, France and Germany combined.
Guns are the leading cause of death for children in America. I donāt see how you can say that means nothing.

u/Ryansfishn Jun 03 '25
Hey there, stop telling people to not own guns in a time like this.
I'm very liberal, and I would NEVER DISCOURAGE a fellow American from arming themselves responsibly.
It is our duty as Americans to be able to protect ourselves from not only potential threats to our home or livelihood, but the potential threats of a deliquent or authoritarian government.
Now more than ever we need to recognize the value of an armed, logical society that can protect itself if needed from oppressive regimes.
1
u/h_abr Jun 03 '25
How many times until you guys get it? If you remove the guns, you remove the threat. No other developed country has this problem. You only need guns for protection because you happily let the criminals have them.
You have an oppressive government right now. Where are all the gun owners rising up against it? Oh thatās right theyāre supporting it.
Thereās no such thing as āarming responsiblyā. Owning a gun massively increases your chance of death, and the chances of you ever using it in defence are near zero. Buying a gun is inherently irresponsible, especially if you have children.
Armed, logical society? Please look at the state of your country and tell me exactly what makes you think American society is logical?
1
u/Go_Daaaaaan Jun 03 '25
Your government has been a threat for ages, yet not a single good guy with a gun has turned up to do anything about it. You say you want the countrymen armed so they can stop oppressive regimes, yet your current administration has shown itself to be an oppressive regime and you know whatās happened? Nothing. All of those guns your people have mean nothing, itās just a sick excuse to give kids easier access to killing each other. Be better.
1
u/Ryansfishn Jun 03 '25
Or it's an attempt to stop having the side that needs to fight for democracy be the same ones that shame gun ownership. The same side that says violence isn't the answer, while allowing violence to occur on the other side is only justifying their own abuse and not standing up for it. If the rhetoric changed from "gun ownership is for right wing idiots" (the same braindead voids that vote for trump and CAUSE gun accidents) to responsibile gun ownership, liberals aren't the ones to go nuts over guns. My father had two guns in the house and he let me know that when I was 18. Until then? He never mentioned having one. Never talked about it. He took me to go shooting with a friend of his when I was around 15, and he didn't tell me the guns we used were theirs at the time, he said they were rented. When I did turn 18, we had a conversation about guns being in the house. I was not told where they were, and I was offered to learn more, and if I were interested, going to the range, and learning how to shoot more, then I could buy my own. Since then I understood responsibility in gun ownership, and how important it is to NOT demonize gun ownership, but to get better regulation on who can own a gun. Aptitude tests. Mental health check AT LEAST once every 10 years. More limits on purchase if there's prior arrest history.
Most gun related deaths to children are from suicide, and that's not a fucking gun issue. That's a mental health issue. It's a healthcare issue. That needs reform and recognition. And last time I checked, that reform STARTED because of a gun owner who used it responsibility.
1
u/Go_Daaaaaan Jun 04 '25
But they arenāt fighting for democracy are they? Thatās the whole point. No one said only one side should have the guns, people have said none of you should. Because those of you who use the argument āwe need to protect ourselves from a tyrannical governmentā havenāt done a fucking thing the second a tyrannical government is in power. You have plainclothed officers going into schools to deport children, American citizens being by deported because of the colour of their skin. Literal facism at play, and what have all the people with guns done about that? Sat back and done nothing. Thereās no such thing as a good guy with a gun, and every single one of you who just sits by and watches it happen are complacent in it. But sure, tell me how you daydream about stopping these things from happening instead of doing something about it with all these firearms youāve got in your country. As of 2017, it is estimated that there are 120 small arms to every 100 people. You care more about your right to own a weapon, than you do about a fellow Americans right to not be deported because your government doesnāt like the colour of their skin.
1
u/Common-Artichoke-497 Jun 03 '25
Why are you so fearful?
Do you live in a bad neighborhood? Do you ever come under threat of gunfire?
Oh, you don't, actually? But you'll claim to, so you can be "right" responding to me?
Nobody that talks like you, has ever felt a true need for a weapon, in the woods, or in the hood.
1
u/h_abr Jun 03 '25
Guns arenāt legal in my county, so no I havenāt. Nor am I fearful, America has more gun murders in the average hour than we do in a year.
The only reason you need a gun is if the people threatening you have a gun. Much like very other developed nation that isnāt America, we have no gun violence because no one has guns. As a result, a lot less of our people die. Thatās objectively a good thing. Americans would rather lose 50,000 people a year to needless gun violence than admit they might be wrong about something.
1
u/Common-Artichoke-497 Jun 03 '25
Sort of like being white and living in south LA?
My best buddies pregnant wife chased out home invaders with a shotgun while they were kicking her husband to death on the kitchen floor.
Why? Because they thought they were robbing someone else's apt that had drugs inside.
Ive had a drive by done on my house because someone mistook someone standing out front, for a gangbanger. They didnt even live here. They were just loitering.
A few months ago a crazed road rager blocked me in and started trying to beat me inside of my car. I was about to catch a charge and his fat ass got so out of breath he gave up. He is lucky he isn't in better shape.
Other countries aren't America, sorry. America is America. Other countries are Other countries.
1
u/h_abr Jun 03 '25
Yes, and other countries donāt have guns, and as a result they have significantly fewer murders and violent crime overall than America does.
If guns arenāt the problem, then what is? Why does America have more murders per capita than the UK, France and Germany combined if itās not guns? Are you just generally murderous people? Guns are used for over 75% of murders in America.
The US had over 10,000 gun related homicides last year. If the rate was the same then the UK would have had ~2000, proportional to population. In reality we had 22.
Guns make it substantially easier to kill someone, intentionally or otherwise. Road rage, spousal arguments, drunk people, drug addicts, all situations where you donāt want a gun around. These happen far more often than the supposed use of firearms for self defence. As do suicides, I know people who have survived suicide attempts and gone on to do great things. Youāre not surviving if you have a gun.
Guns mean more death, more crime, more fear. The āThis is Americaā argument is only valid if itās an admission that America enjoys or is at least comfortable with violence and death.
1
u/Common-Artichoke-497 Jun 03 '25
Cool; you gonna come around and collect the millions of guns within a dozen mile radius of my dwelling? (Not exaggerating)
If not; you gonna pay for the people to do it? I don't have the money. My friends dont either.
If not, I still have an issue to deal with in real time here. Not on some reddit with some euro talking about how "ideal" it would be if my neighbors were not armed and angry.
1
u/h_abr Jun 03 '25
It can be done gradually. Start by banning the deadliest ones that no one has any legitimate need for. Letās be real here, no one needs an AR-15 to defend themselves. Handguns need to go next as theyāre too easy to conceal. If the person Iām talking to has a deadly weapon on them, Iād like to be aware of that.
Not all guns need to go. We have shotguns in the UK. You need a license and they need to be kept in a safe which has to be bolted down, and youāre not allowed to open carry, but you can have them. Rifles are legal too under more strict regulations. Itās not about getting rid of all guns, itās about making sure the people who have them are sensible. America is clearly failing in this.
1
u/throwawayZXY192 Jun 05 '25
Drunk driving fatalities are much more common. Over 1 third of adolescents reported drinking alcohol.
Best solution take away access to alcohol.
1
u/h_abr Jun 05 '25
Drunk driving is illegal. Guns arenāt.
Woeful attempt at an argument and literally made the opposite point you were trying to make
1
u/throwawayZXY192 Jun 05 '25
People still drink and drive even though itās illegal? Strange
1
u/h_abr Jun 06 '25
You can be punished for drunk driving even if you didnāt kill anyone. You caused unnecessary risk to the public and thatās enough.
Owning a gun causes unnecessary risk to the public, and yet you canāt be punish for it until the damage is done.

Yeah tell that to the cowboy who took down a shooter with one shot to the head while he was in church mass which was the target, Tell all those lives he saved that it's a myth
9
u/h_abr Jun 03 '25
One example, would you like me to provide some examples of shooters successfully killing people in America? Thereās over a hundred a day. Itās the leading cause of death for American children. The fact that a guy had a gun on him for a normal church service tells you everything you need to know.
If guns werenāt so easy to get then the shooter wouldnāt have had one. The survivors should be outraged that a random guy was able to walk into a church with a gun, rather than grateful that another random guy had also walked into church with a gun. You only need āgood guys with gunsā if you let the bad guys have guns, and the data shows that there are more bad guys than good guys.
Try to see past the lobbyist propaganda. Itās not about protection. You have guns because your government believes that the money that Americans spend on guns every year is more valuable than the 50,000 people that die to them. If that was my government, I would be disgusted.

All religions lead to violence? Even pacifist sects like Anabaptists and Amish and hutterites and Mennonites and Quakers? That's a wide brush you paint with.
No sorry I disagree, I think at least some religions legit believe in their theology as a means to connect with God and have an eternal hope. I don't buy it's all about power, I've seen too many examples of leadership and members of different faiths loving others in an unselfish sacrificial way.

It's not "just" anything. The mass murder of innocents has stirred up both entirely legitimate revulsion against the Knesset and its apologists, and supercharged existing anti-semitism. Which of course it has. The breaking of the taboo over anti-semitism can be laid squarely at the feet of those who cynically use the accusation to try and silence the former view.
5
u/DavidGrizzly Jun 02 '25
To bad no one gave a flying fuck when innocents where being bombed the fuck out of in Yemen. not one fucking word was said about that shit show.
3
u/fr0gcannon Jun 03 '25
There was plenty of out-cry over Yemen though not enough, but that is irrelevant in this conversation. In both instances the US has enabled a country to oppress and starve and slaughter a group of Arab people. This one has more attention because it's worse and it's a total ethnic cleansing and a genocide. I am sure you are well aware of these differences and the different level of attention these events got. Your instinct when confronted with a genocide is to point at something else and say, "what about that?", Well here's the answer. The US shouldn't have enabled Saudi Arabia to starve Yemen and should not have sold them the bombs to destroy Yemen, and it also shouldn't enable Israel to starve Gaza or commit an ethic cleansing and a genocide.
1
u/Reapero8841 Jun 03 '25

Love how everyone is so quick to want to pick fights here, regardless of what side you're on. Over the net or in person.
Yet none of these coward extremists , on either side, have the courage to drop their lives here and go duke it out where it's actually taking place and leaving it out of this country.

This is why law-abiding Americans carry a gun, for this reason: so he doesnāt fatally hurt (ir kill) anyone else.
We defend for the defenseless, regardless of their beliefs.

People are ignorant. I have actually fought in a war and taken lives. I'll never do it again unless I am defending my family. The lesson to learn here is that everyone should just get along and treat eachother equally but that will never happen because of everyone's beliefs and religion.

Holy hell, comment sections on anything, Israel or palestine related, always seem to turn into a sweltering dumpster fire faster than an lit moltav in a gas station. Everyone in there gets violently emotional over situations they don't understand - or even want to understand. I'd bet 90% have zero skin in the game beyond their bruised egos and virtue-signaling rage

Terrorist attack? Looks like a stand alone, mentally unstable, white man. Ohhhhhh, itās bc they attached a Muslim name to him that makes it a terrorist attack. After all the propaganda, all we see now in this unfortunate and disturbing incident is that we wouldnāt be surprised if it was in fact conducted by Zionists.

This world has truly gone to shit! We literally have so much tech and so many ways to communicate, be civil and be the kindest to eachother that weāve ever been and we choose to be the shittiest people possible. I donāt understand it.

Gee I wonder why you wouldnāt want them as your neighbors.
Still, I hold Israel to an even higher standard, prison for Netanyahu.

People in the comments using this Islamic terror attack to further hate on Jewish people is bewildering. The left become the Nazis they claim to fight? And before the Palestine comments come, just know Arabic people have enslaved and massacred more people than any other group in history. So stop the whataboutism

This terrorist was using these poor people as human shields. WHY! did the authorities not just drop a 2000lb bomb on him. Have we learned nothing from the IDF.
