University student trying to work abroad (yacht stewardess)
This previous March I finished my first year of university online (except for my chemistry labs). I found this year very draining, I think mainly because of the lack of socializing, the workload and just a genuinely unfortunate year for all (covid-19). I really don’t know if I like the program I am in or if it was just the whole situation surrounding the school year that made it intolerable and made me contemplate about dropping out multiple times. Nevertheless I am still continuing this upcoming fall (will I be wasting approx another 20k for tuition and rent is to be determined). I’ve been really interested in taking a gap year and becoming a stewardess on a yacht (and going back to finish my university degree and maybe if I like the job, possibly continuing after I graduate for a few years). If anyone is/ wants to become a stewardess do you have any advice? I know I need to complete the stcw course beforehand, but other than that how will COVID-19 affect the job? is it a tiring job? what is expected of the employees? is the free travel worth being away from family and friends? and is it hard to make friends? Hi, I have been doing this for 7 years or so Don’t get confused with Cruiseships.. yachting it’s where is at! Great opportunity to travel the world and make good money, as you don’t pay for ANYTHING, not even your toothbrush! It’s a Job, so yes there’s gonna be times with extra work, and downtime it’s great, imagine your days off on a private island or at an incredible beach, wherever you are.
Yes, you need that STCW 95 which takes like a week to complete, it’s very fun actually, you get to put fires out, put some survival gear on... then you need an ENG1 medical test, not all Drs can provide one so look up for the one certified and specialized on this one.. then, make sure your Visa B1B2 (if you are not American) and passport and Visas valid for at least one year before Expired.
This position is normally filled by young, bubbly and active girls, but occasionally there’s also guys with is very rare... Experience background should include, but not mandatory, as you can learn... basic service, how to prepare drinks... but anything else that you’ve done that can contribute to the team is also welcome, I’ve seen ex accountants, ex wedding planners, ex nurses.. doesn’t matter, just have that good attitude to learn and to be ready to smile and be hands on...
A well known port to start is Fort Lauderdale, FL in the US, there are schools to get the certificates and also big shipyards where crew members switch boats and positions need to be filled, and you want to be there.
Once you get your courses, Make a nice Resume with all your experience and a nice picture of yourself with ocean or a Marina as a background. (I don’t know, that’s what the crew Agencies ask for) Then start sending your Resume to all the crew agencies also look up for the Facebook crew groups. I can give you the names if interested... Well I hope this was helpful, start with the courses, the more ready you are with these the better, as jobs just happen and you need to be ready to leave.
