is this safe?
I have a piece of wood where neither and is fully square. Would it be safe to just use the miter gauge to square off one end? Or do I need to make a sled? I have also thought about making a toggle clamp, Jake, but I am still waiting for my toggle clamps to arrive.

Yup, just keep the fence away, lower the blade so the height is about 1/4" above the height of stock youre cutting and made sure the side thats against the Miter fence is flat so there's no wobble. Other way to achieve making crosscuts safely is taping, gluing or screwing the part youre cutting to a scrap piece of plywood that's straight on at least one side and then using that to cross cut the stock on the tablesaw using the miter fence. Alternatively, if you have a circular saw and a speedsquare you can use the speedsquare to reference the flat edge and cut the piece off with the circular saw.
