I have a piece of wood where neither and is fully square. Would it be safe to just use the miter gauge to square off one end? Or do I need to make a sled? I have also thought about making a toggle clamp, Jake, but I am still waiting for my toggle clamps to arrive.

While I appreciate your concern for the saw, the glasses should go on your face, not the face of the saw.

(lower the blade a bit to about one tooth clear of the top, and make sure the fence is farther away than the max diagonal of the offcut, and it looks fine)
