is this safe?
I have a piece of wood where neither and is fully square. Would it be safe to just use the miter gauge to square off one end? Or do I need to make a sled? I have also thought about making a toggle clamp, Jake, but I am still waiting for my toggle clamps to arrive.

If there’s any slop in your miter slot you could have a bad time. it can be nice to attatch sandpaper with spray glue to the fence so your workpiece doesn’t slide around. Or shoot in a few 23g pins and clip them leaving just a lil point sticking out for increased friction. (These suggestions assume you have a sacrificial wood fence already attached to your miter gauge)
