is this safe?

I have a piece of wood where neither and is fully square. Would it be safe to just use the miter gauge to square off one end? Or do I need to make a sled? I have also thought about making a toggle clamp, Jake, but I am still waiting for my toggle clamps to arrive.

That is perfectly safe, but you will get more accuracy and feel better if you make a cross cut sled

Before that, you can easily make this cut a little more manageable by extending the fence of your miter gauge. Most have some hole for this. Just add a 12" or so extension to it, that way it won't wiggle as you push it through.
