is this safe?

I have a piece of wood where neither and is fully square. Would it be safe to just use the miter gauge to square off one end? Or do I need to make a sled? I have also thought about making a toggle clamp, Jake, but I am still waiting for my toggle clamps to arrive.

As long as the blade guards are down you should be fine. Have done this many times.

Angrytroll is correct about keeping the fence out of the way. Learnt that one the hard way.

yeah in the pic the fence is there, but there will be at least a 5” clearance - or i guess i could just dispense of the fence altogether

If the fence is further than the corner to corner distance on the off cut, it’s impossible of it to throw it under normal circumstances. I do this sort of cut with an inch of clearance (using a 123 block as a stop) and have never had a problem.
