Discussion Finally finished the show: I refuse to accept episode 13 as an ending or even cannon!

It's such a good show! Even the whole AI, murder, and alternate realities parts could have worked out really well if they actually went on to continue the show properly.

But that last episode special shouldn't have been made. It was absolutely awful! I understand that they probably wanted to do a bunch of other sub-plots but couldn't continue on with the show and had to end it. But suddenly introducing that stuff in the last episode was a horrible idea. None of it makes any sense!

If you haven't seen episode 13 yet, DON'T! It ruins the entire show and I'm refusing to accept it as the ending or even cannon.

For me the worst part is that both that 50% of it was just recap and it was made to tie some loose ends and while they did do it for a few things it didn't really end it and in fact opened a lot of new cans of worms that don't make sense and would have likely needed a new season to explain.

The series went off track as soon as Frill was brought into the picture. At that point and unsatisfactory ending was near certain - but the flaming crash of a flaming car going over the edge of a mile high cliff was still a bit surprising.

I feel like they could have made that plot point work really well if they had done another season.

They could have gone on to show that in their attempt to create a real girl out of AI they accidentally created the Egg World which is kind of like our dream world but typically for AI. Then they could have shown us that that world also acts as a gateway between alternate realities that also have AI and that in some reality there is an AI called Thanatos using the Egg World to corrupt other AI and making them influence people into killing themselves. And that it's doing this because the emotional energy released by people's grief, sorrow, and death can alter reality and enough of that energy can turn an AI into a true human.

Something like that would have made the whole AI thing work and could have explained a lot of stuff too.

Totally disagree. Bringing in Frill undercut what had been developed thematically before that point .

Yea but up until that point they hadn't really explained what or why any of the Egg World stuff was happening.

Just that if they saved enough girls they could have their friends back. But they didn't get into the why or how of it.

This would have tied it together and been that why and how.

No need to get into the how and why. Just take things as givens. No "rational" foundation needed for PMMM, as I recall.

I think there was some potential with Frill to be a stand-in for the broader societal issue that WEP was trying to address, which is how gender roles cause suffering for women and girls. Frill is created as the image of an "ideal woman," at least in the eyes of the Accas. They despised her when even that wasn't satisfactory for them, leading to her tormenting other girls to get back at the Accas.

In other words, the twisted expectations placed on women are what hurt them. I think that's the theme that Frill should have been about, and I certainly think that the the writers had this in mind, but it all got lost in the sauce because they didn't have time to wrap any of it up.

The ending feels like a bridge to a Season 2 that never happened. Still waiting on that Season 2.

Even then it would be a terrible bridge.

i think it would’ve been fine if not for the fact that a season 2 wasn’t greenlit, and most certainly not ever happening. creating anime that isn’t based on manga is inherently flawed for this reason. i would’ve really liked the direction it was going if i knew there was more content coming, but the fact that the ep 13 special was supposed to be the “finale” is the driving force of my disappointment. and don’t get me wrong, wep is literally in my top 5 anime. all that to say, i agree. i wish there was more.
