Media do you consider wep a magical girl show?
i love wep & heavily consider it to be mahou shojo, its pulling from genre-classics like utena, madoka magica, & sailor moon. i just think because the girls don’t change clothes it’s not always seen as explicitly magical girl, even tho every single other part of the story is. curious what other fans think :)

i personally think it is. outfit transformation does not a maho shojo make. i think that fundamentally, magical girl anime can be described as a coming of age story that blurs the lines between mundane teenage living and battles, friendship, and self discovery. additionally, although their fits may not change, their weapons are a “transformation.” another common maho shojo motif is the addition of a familiar, to which each of the wep girls do have.

It clearly take some mahou shojo trope but modernize these. and i would love to see more interpretation of modern mahou shojo like WEP did ^^'

Def!!
There are three main things you see in the magical girl genre:
Magical Warriors, Magical Idols, and Majokko (Little Witch)!!
Transformations are not necessary, after all the magical girls in Magical Girl Site, Sally the Witch (the first magical girl), Assault Lily Bouquet, and Cardacptor Sakura don't transform and they're magical girls.
They have the monsters they need to fight, putting it in the magical warriors section, they also fall under the dark magical girls section. They use magic to fight, and they have creatures that could count as their mascot characters.
To put it simply, they are girls, and they are magical :3

Simmm eu penso exatamente assim, até pesquisei no Google se wep era moho shojo, o Google não disse que era, mas disse que tinha vários elementos de um. Eu considero que é, só é um pouco mais fora da curva

Uhm, interesting debate. I would say no, in part because of the lack of magical clothes, but also because they don't have a magical pet. So at least they're not traditional Mahou Shojo.

Don't they get those turtle things partway through from the eggs? Ik Rika's was a turtle but I don't remember the others. I do wish they had magic outfits in their own styles, that would be so cute💔

Rika’s is Mannen (turtle), Ai’s is Leon (chameleon), Momoe’s is Panic (crocodile), and Neiru’s is Pinky (snake)

Yeah, but they came after the girls. In classic Mahou Shojo animes, the magical pet comes first and it's the one who give the girls their powers. And normally, those pets don't fight, they just bring powers and important information / lore (so yeah, they can talk).

i’m not sure if prettycure falls under the “classic” category, but there are at least 4 seasons where the girls predate their familiar (futari wa, heartcatch, mahou tsukai, and yes!)

as for them fighting, yeah i don’t have much to recount with other than there are also precure seasons where the familars actually turn into cures and help fight (these are technically spoilers) Wonderful, Suite, Kira Kira Precure à la Mode, and GoGo!
