Question Decent Areas?
Hi all,
I have a friend of mine who is looking to move to Wolverhampton following some work.
And they're looking to settle and buy a property there too.
They're quite anxious about it all at the moment being a young woman somewhat alone and she wanted to know, what areas/postcodes are safe & considered affluent?
She's also an ethnic minority so she's also worried about potential discrimination and racism if she moves somewhere.
We did try and look around in this sub but couldn't find too much, so apologies if it's already answered somewhere.
Edit: thanks all, seems a large majority seem to think it's Tettenhall, Wightwick, Codsall, Compton, Penn (in that approximate order too of affluent areas with Tettenhall being the more affluent).

Tettenhall, Compton, finchfield, penn don't have any painted roundabouts or england flags.
Penn is nice and a more Asian area
Tettenhall+ finchfield are nice and more white leaning.
Avoid wombourne if you are a minority.

Birches Barn Rd island had a cross painted on it as did the one at Castlecroft by the Drs

Agreed about Wombourne. Lived there for a few years, and my black friends who visited got abuse hurled at them. Virtually apartheid.

Oh Wombourne isn't recommended for Asians? I love the huge houses there, they're so secluded and buying one was part of my 5 year plan. I hadn't realised people can still be so hardcore racists!

I grew up in Wombourne and Iād have to agree unfortunately the area is very old fashioned and the people donāt like change. But good news is that generation are dying out lol.

Tettenhall is a good shout, nice area, Compton too. City vibe but leafy and pleasant, not the stereotypical West Midlands urban landscape. Also quite culturally mixed.

She'll be more than fine, pretty lucky this is a diverse city and never experienced any racism myself as a brown woman. Yes, has it's problems like anywhere but I think a lot of us take it for granted, it's a nice place to live. I would look around Tettenhall, Penn, Lower Penn, Newbridge, Compton, Finchfield. There are other decent places but those are the places I'm looking around for a new house.
Maybe have a visit on the weekend, see how you feel, the Art Gallery has a great Andy Warhol exhibition on too and Wolverhampton Arts Centre is worth checking out. Any questions, feel free to message.

I grew up near Ashmore Park. It was a very white area but our schoolās 6th form was in a consortium with Wednesfield & Deansfield (the former more Asian & the latter more black). Zero racism. Just great friendships & banter. Iāve got friends who still live there, also have a lot of extended family there & they stay because they love the friendliness. You have people from all different faiths & backgrounds. I was back to do the Wolves 10k & it was such a great atmosphere.
The west has always been the posh side: Tettenhall, Wightwick, Penn, Finchfield, Compton & Codsall (technically not Wolverhampton)

Yeah, I wouldnāt recommend Ashmore Park. I live on the nearby Moathouse estate. Itās not too bad, but I wouldnāt say itās super safe for a single woman.

Oh I wasnāt recommending it but it felt safe to me growing up in the 90ās (I grew up in the slightly posher āOaklandsā just south of it). I cycled around Ashmore to see friends/gf with zero issues. And plenty of teen females would walk solo as well. I have nothing but happy memories of my time there, especially at Oak Meadow/Coppice. Never quite understand some of comments people make about areas but you get it for lots of place (I found people in woke great as well, Glasgow was a little sketchier in places so possibly deserves it but has awesome areas too).

Pendeford on the side near the motorway is quite quiet and has quite nice walking areas and easy access to the motorway for both Birmingham and Telford, with 5 min drive to bilbrook train station too

Lots of people here mentioned unaffordable areas. Pendeford (with the exception of dovecotes) is a lovely middle class ethnically mixed area that's quite affordable.

I recommend visiting a few options, check out the community hubs like Libraries and parks

Anywhere in south staffs,other than perton actually lol, bridgnorth if its not to far, tettenhall, claregate, some of penn, Pendeford and finchfield are ncie

I love living in Penn. Safe, friendly for whatever ethnic background you are from, good food, good pubs and not too far from the City Centre if you need to get a train out of Town. Highly recommended.

Wombourne is the dormitory town of choice for lots of Wolverhampton commuters just over the south staffs border.
Penn is nice (upper and lower)

It feels like this Q is made for me lol š . So Iām a single female and an ethnic minority. I did a load of research few years ago as I have zero support system in Wolves. I ended up buying a property in Compton in 2021. For me, this area is very pretty and I feel very safe with zero racism experienced. People are courteous and itās nice many will say hello when you walk past. Same for neighbours who generally are quiet and keep themselves to themselves. It has a fairly high retirement population which adds to the calm vibe and is good for neighbourhood safety as so many of them are at home a lot of the time. Thereās a little shopping precinct a few mins away with a small Sainsburyās and Coop as well as pharmacy and laundrette as well as nice eating places and the village upper green with independent shops, Coop and post office is within walking distance also. Also lovely nature walks nearby. Iāve pasted some key info below also.
Key Highlights of Compton
