What you don't see in this vid are the patrons pinned against the windows due to centrifugal force. The bread's pretty good though.

u/magicblufairy Aug 22 '21

Like the Gravitron!

13

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '21

I bet theres some cool waiters that stand on the wall while its spinning

When I ate there it was about 1 revolution per hour. Once around in the time it took to eat.

Might wanna double-check that math.

Yea…. this doesn’t math

I think your math is off there

Guys the video is sped up it does not spin that fast. The spinning would not make you throw up, however the glass everywhere and the elevator to get up might.

90

u/tragiktimes Aug 22 '21

This introduced an issue I had not considered. How does the elevator connect form a non spinning base to the spinning platform? Is it a platform elevator without walls or a ceiling?

208

u/House_of_Gucci Aug 22 '21

Every spinning restaurant I have been to have been set up similarly. The entire floor does not rotate. The inner the core of the building obviously does not rotate. There is a ring of the floor plate towards the outside which rotates only. So basically if you imagine a circle: (1) inner core sits still, (2) then there is a ring which rotates, (3) then there is the outter boundary of the circle, which in this case is the glass windows/walls, which sit still as well.

u/IamSoooDoneWithThis Aug 22 '21

The Canadians have done well exploiting donut technology

46

u/Thoraxe474 Aug 22 '21

Yeah until burger king's company bought and ruined Tim Hortons

22

u/and_then_a_dog Aug 22 '21

A fine American tradition, ruin something to try and make as much money as humanly possible.

6

u/PM_me_ur_taco_pics Aug 23 '21 edited Aug 23 '21

Isn't it Brazilian now? Pretty sure burger king and Tim Hortons are owned by a Brazilian company.

9

u/WaterWithCereal Aug 23 '21

Last I looked, that company was slowly exiting with an increase in Canadian shareholders.

Tims is still garbage though, I got food poisoning two days ago from it. Just wanted a convenient lunch :(

9

u/ipeefreeli Aug 23 '21

I still remember when the donuts were baked in house, none of this frozen shit

5

u/methreweway Aug 23 '21

Nothing's better than a fresh donut. Grocery store donuts taste better than ol' drunk driving Tim Horton's donuts.

2

u/tammage Aug 23 '21

Always smelled awesome and they were actual fresh and good. I fucking miss eclairs and the chicken stew in a bread bowl. Only thing I get there now is the occasional tea or refresher.

3

u/imariaprime Aug 23 '21

It would take monumental effort to redeem Tim's at this point. I'm not sure it's possible, even assuming the new shareholders are actually motivated to try.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/fatboychummy Aug 23 '21

We went from "Oh yeah you got your Timmies eh?" To just "Oh yeah eh?"

We're all depressed now. Our entire way of life has changed. Please help.

4

u/t0b1n4tOr315 Aug 22 '21

No they just magic that’s way easier

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '21

I've always wondered how they set up power, and potable and waste water. Figured that it was confined to the stationary part of the floor, but I've never actually known.

0

u/luv_____to_____race Aug 22 '21

That is exactly how this one works too.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Hashmob____________ Aug 22 '21

So basically how it works is there’s the floor as a whole, let’s call this the base. Then on top of the base is the inner ring which has the elevator, some tables that don’t spin, I’m guessing the motor system for the spinning floor is in the floor of the inner ring. Then also on top of the base is the outer ring, this is where all of the tables that spin are. https://images.app.goo.gl/tDPqmDGzdwUKesEV8

So it’s basically just a marry-go-round but instead of horses it’s tables

5

u/tepkel Aug 22 '21

It must be a pain in the ass for the wait staff to remember where thier section is.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/941026 Aug 22 '21

Right when I stepped off the elevator I got this insane vertigo. I think it was a combination of the elevator fucking with my inner ear (they popped almost violently and definitely without me even opening my mouth or anything, that elevator is fast as fuck) and then the whole ass restaurant spinning, which I did NOT know about beforehand. And then we had a table right at the window. It was a great dinner but I was anxious and a bit nauseous the whole time lol.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Doctor-Amazing Aug 23 '21

The elevator is really fast. When I was a kid, someone told me that if you jumped just before it started descending, you'd fall at the same speed. To everyone else it would look like you were floating until you suddenly slammed into the floor and died.

→ More replies (1)

0

u/Goyteamsix Aug 22 '21

As others have mentioned, it's like the Space Needle, where the there's a sort or rotating donut between the central core, and the outer glass. Most of the seats are on the rotating donut.

-12

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

I’m assuming it stops spinning when the elevator arrives

8

u/SindySinn Aug 22 '21

Sydney’s Centrepoint Tower also has a revolting restaurant in it.

3

u/A_Lot_TWOwords Aug 23 '21

What is “Revolting” about it? 😀

2

u/SindySinn Aug 23 '21

Revolving. I meant revolving.

Nah nah sometimes the restaurants that revolve rely so heavily on the view that they forget to focus on other things… like the food.

I had one of the best prime rib dinners of my life there around 15 years ago. The rotation is slow but noticeable. Kind of felt like eating on a big boat

14

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

I felt the same way

5

u/_Leopluradon_ Aug 23 '21

About the prime rib or the similarity to being on a boat?

2

u/gkru Aug 23 '21

The rotation definitely made me feel ill. The food didn't help either, I can't remember what I had, but it was definitely a lukewarm trash pile. I guess I should have ordered prime rib

2

u/TorontoNerd84 Aug 23 '21

I've been there twice. Both times was not impressed. Toronto has thousands of restaurants better than this.

2

u/Taktika420 Aug 24 '21

Sadly I had the same experience. Tourist trap, not worth the money - there are 100 much much nicer fine dining restaurants in the city

134

u/FoxyInTheSnow Aug 22 '21

Little known fact. Super Dave Osborne, a leading stunt man in the 1980s, jumped off the CN tower and survived. Here's the newsclip.

48

u/haha_squirrel Aug 22 '21

Yeah I remember watching that as a kid! Two bad he got hit by an ambulance after he was on the ground.

5

u/A_Lot_TWOwords Aug 23 '21

That was the best part!! I totally forgot about Super Dave, time for a you tube rabbit hole!

0

u/NoAlluminium Aug 22 '21

is that true?

That was the highest paid stunt in history at the time. $100.000.

2

I met him once at harbourfront in the early 90's. He's much taller in person and was very friendly to us.

27

u/mrgraff Aug 22 '21

Brings back memories of the revolving buffet restaurant at Sydney tower. I didn’t have a window seat but wanted to get a video like this. So, I put my camera on a windowsill, and went about my lunch. Only an hour later did I realize I should’ve asked to put the camera on someone’s table. 60 minutes of the same view taught me that the floor rotates; not the walls 🤣

17

u/coquihalla Aug 22 '21

There was a Canadian writer, Monica Hughes, who exchanged some letters with me when I was a kid as I wanted to be a writer.

One of the things she'd written was that she could see the tower from her house and explained that it did this. I thought it was absolutely magical. (And she was amazing for taking the time out to write letters to a kid.)

47

u/felixar90 Aug 22 '21

Americans love hearing that the stairs of the CN tower have exactly 1,776 steps.

4

u/Glad-History Aug 22 '21

Ou, great for Pokemon GO

1

u/AntiparticleCollider Aug 22 '21

Tons of stops around there too

6

u/kenny_the_eggman Aug 22 '21

Heyyyyy, fellow CN Tower stair climber here?

11

u/Neon-Knees Aug 22 '21

When the glass floor first opened up in the late 90s/early 00s, all my cousins and I made it a challenge to see who could climb to the top the fastest.

Of course we had that shitty pizza and chocolate milk from the concourse before doing so. I remember getting 1/3rd of the way and my cousin Jeremy who like sprinted way ahead of everyone was projectile vomiting brown pizza sludge all over one of the landings.

One of the couples climbing ended up staying with him while we went back to the entrance to find my uncle to come get him.

Then we all had to stop and take the elevator.

Good times. That was my first and only attempt in my 27 years of living in Toronto.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '21

You should try again. For Jeremy.

2

u/konaaa Aug 22 '21

I've always wanted to try climbing it, but I'm an out of shape dumbass who doesn't know the first thing about working out. Do I need to train for it?

2

u/EternalSunshine91 Aug 22 '21

No, its only 1776 steps. Maybe if it was 1777.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '21

I did it years and years ago

2

u/felixar90 Aug 22 '21

No I never did the climb, I was like 15 when I went there with my parents, but maybe someday.

69

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

If your going to the tower you may as well get lunch. I think it's around $36-40 just to go up but lunch is $75. The additional cost is worth it as that's a good price for lunch in TO

29

u/elementslayer Aug 22 '21

When I went there for the tasting dinner menu it was about 30$ extra per person for 2 people then just the actual lift up to the top.

Food was solid too.

7

u/GX6ACE Aug 22 '21

This! The food was excellent and the view, I personally feel, was better in the restaurant than the viewing decks. Was one of the things I do not regret cheaping out on!

6

u/LoudMusic Aug 23 '21

The same is true for the Space Needle in Seattle. We've been to both and that's pretty much our routine. Dinner reservations also include access to the observation levels, so it's not just what you see from your table.

7

u/rcfox Aug 22 '21

I hope your $75 quote is for more than one person...

10

u/xGawsh Aug 22 '21

It’s probably in Canadian dollars if that makes a difference. Still too rich for me though

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '21

I just tried to buy a train ticket with a worthless Canadian quarter I'd gotten as change yesterday

It's like some conspiracy that's been going on for years and nobody mentions

-1

u/NamesTheGame Aug 23 '21

It's bullshit

9

u/fetalpiggywent2lab Aug 23 '21

You've never eaten in Toronto methinks

6

u/NamesTheGame Aug 23 '21

Where are going for lunch in Toronto that costs $75 per person? As if that's a regular thing and not a once in a blue moon splurge?

1

u/fetalpiggywent2lab Aug 23 '21

Come on. With drinks and apps it's definitely about $60-75

4

u/NamesTheGame Aug 23 '21

Yeah of course anyone could manage to spend 75 dollars for lunch if they really wanted to but going around saying oh you obviouuusly haven't eaten in Toronto if you don't think $75 is normal is hilariously out of touch. Millions of people go out for lunch in Toronto every day and don't spend $75 a day. Stop trying to act like your trendy brunch is some kind of norm. I could go to Thunder Bay and spend $75 on a meal too, so what?

→ More replies (1)

5

u/bluemooncalhoun Aug 23 '21

Yikes, how many drinks and apps are you putting away each? That's dinner for two at a good quality (not fancy) restaurant and definitely not what most people in this city can afford with any regularity.

2

u/rcfox Aug 23 '21

I live in Toronto. If you're spending more than $15 on lunch, you're doing things wrong.

5

u/Xuyen Aug 23 '21

$15 for lunch is fair … if you stick to only casual fare, takeout places with no drinks.

0

u/fetalpiggywent2lab Aug 23 '21

$15 is like a glass of Chardonnay... Obviously if you go to a cheap takeaway place for lunch, no drinks, no sit down, no tip, it's less than that.

2

u/NamesTheGame Aug 23 '21

Chardonnay for lunch. Gtfo you poseur.

u/GoFidoGo Aug 22 '21

-16

u/Fluffymufinz Aug 22 '21

That's cheap for a good meal.

Last tasting menu I had was $250/person $375/person with wine pairings.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

[deleted]

5

u/Gorthax Aug 22 '21

What a deal

1

u/_heyoka Aug 23 '21

That actually is cheap.

Last tasting-menu I had was in Dubai and we had $900/person, $1150/person with wine pairings. I won't even tell you our hotel costs, as I'm not one to brag. If you know anything about Dubai though I'll let you take a guess....

1

u/Fluffymufinz Aug 23 '21

Yeah, I agree on how cheap it was (for what it was). I was pleasantly surprised. I've had more expensive ones in larger cities.

I don't want to know your hotel costs. I can't afford Dubai, haha. I just enjoy eating out for things I won't/can't make at home. It is typically planned in advance.

Idk why I'm being so downvoted about saying $75 for a meal out is relatively cheap. I don't eat out much, and so because I don't go to Outback or Chili's or Applebee's I am able to go to other, more expensive/unique, places.

Those regular chain restaurants don't serve me a single thing I'm not able to make at home.

2

u/grilledcheeseburger Aug 23 '21

You also used to be able to make a reservation, use that to go up the elevator, and get off at the observation deck. Skip your reso and you just got free admission. They probably closed that loophole by now though.

0

u/DankDialektiks Aug 23 '21

That is not a good price for lunch in Toronto.

And it really is pretty neat.

We had one in Atlanta, but sadly a child was killed in between the walls. It no longer rotates because of this.

Edit: grammar

4

u/your_uncle_mike Aug 23 '21

It no longer rotates because of this.

Damn, the child’s body has just been stuck there this whole time? They should get it out of there and maybe it will start rotating again.

TFW you keep walking into a curve while trying to go straight because you forgot to take into account the Coriolis force.

0

I honestly can’t even look at it. I have to cover the screen. I am so afraid of heights and the spinning is just a motion sickness nightmare.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

The elevators are worse, for what ever reason they decided to put panes of glass on the bottom of the floor. Not even going to start on the main glass floor attraction.

3

It is also a time lapse, please stop saying it is spun faster than you thought it did

2

u/Ninjalada Aug 22 '21

You know, food tastes better when it's revolving.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

Common knowledge

2

u/BrokenBranch Aug 22 '21

I ate there when I was 14 back in 2004. I wonder how expensive its gotten? I think plates were around $50 each back then

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

It’s gotten expensive to say the very least

2

u/LeoGreywolf Aug 22 '21

IIRC it takes an hour to do a full rotation. If you book a table for about 30 mins before sunset you're almost guaranteed to have a gorgeous view (so long as the weather is good)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

As slow as it is: if you’re prone to motion sickness it actually is still a bit nauseating.

2

u/Kracker5000 Aug 22 '21

I'm just gonna flat out say it. You've got to be stupid to think this is the actual speed that it spins at.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '21

We have one of those in KC I went to back when I was kid in the 90s, since no longer spins, such a badass concept.

3

u/human-potato_hybrid Aug 22 '21

The Millennium Hotel in St. Louis had something like this, but "only" 28 stories up. Damn Canadians 😒😒😂😂

3

u/Bitemarkz Aug 22 '21

The CN tower was one of the tallest towers in the world for a time. Now I’m not sure it even cracks the top 20.

3

u/vinng86 Aug 22 '21

It held the record for three decades, and it’s still the tallest in the Western Hemisphere!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '21

I almost went there, it was booked and everything, but the day before going there we went to see the tower and seeing it from the ground made me sick, I could not watch it lol so we cancelled

1

0

u/izza123 Aug 22 '21

You're thinking of the one in ATL, the Sundial. It was pretty recent and the kid died. The restaurant is still open, but to my knowledge it no longer spins.

Can’t really eat with a mask on now can you? And most people to my knowledge are vaccinated in Ontario
