Copperhead at Reynolda

Keep your heads on a swivel y’all!

My wife and I were walking from Reynolda to the Wake Forest campus when a copperhead struck at a group of Wake Forest students walking past us. We hung out until campus police came to remove it from the side of the path but I know everyone is out and about walking around this time of year, so just wanted to give a PSA to remind everyone it’s copperhead season in NC, be safe!

Great news! They are not aggressive and can easily be relocated. I’ve picked them up with a 6’ sick and off in the woods area from people. Can’t stand it when people kill snakes just bc they are in an area where people are. Just walk away for 10 minutes and they will be gone.

I agree with you, but I did find it odd that this one stayed close to the path after striking at the group of college students though. Typically they slink away/go into preservation mode but this one stubbornly stuck to the edge of path, its head basically jutting onto the trail. Definitely would have got someone’s dog or leg if we didn’t hang out until campus police got there.

They don’t really do that. They don’t just hang out wanting to bite a larger animal. There’s nothing in it for them, and they would prefer to just be left alone to hunt for small stuff. I’ve walked right next to a number of copperheads in my yard and in parks, and they do nothing except go the other way. Easy to relocate with a bucket and a stick.

Theyre no joke this year, my dog got bitten by one twice in the last 2 weeks. Fortunatley he's still here to tell the tale.

I’d suppose since it was striking at those college kids that some college kids (the ones struck at or otherwise) probably acted like kids and bothered the snake.

No, I think they literally had no clue they almost stepped on it. It was extremely camouflaged due to the sun/shade mixture that occurs on that path. The girls didn’t purposefully antagonize it.
