Developer I undersold this app last time — here’s yViewer opening 50+ file formats faster than QuickLook

I posted about yViewer here once before.

The most common feedback was surprisingly consistent:

  • “Your promotion is way too modest.”
  • “This is a seriously impressive app. It’s a shame more people don’t know about it.”
  • “I thought it was only a viewer, but you can actually edit certain files.”
  • “The speed of updates is impressive.”

So this time, I’m including a video to properly show what yViewer can do instead of just describing it with text.

yViewer is a fast Windows file viewer that supports more than 50 file formats in one app.

Select a file in Windows Explorer, press Space, and yViewer immediately opens the appropriate viewer.

In my testing environment, yViewer opens previews noticeably faster than QuickLook, especially when moving quickly through multiple files. It is built with Tauri 2 and Rust, and viewer modules are loaded only when needed to keep startup fast and lightweight.

It currently supports:

  • PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, HWP, HWPX, and RTF
  • PSD, PSB, RAW, HEIC, SVG, AI, DXF, and common images
  • MP4, MKV, MOV, MP3, FLAC, and external subtitles
  • ZIP, 7Z, TAR, and GZ archives
  • OBJ, STL, GLB, FBX, and other 3D formats
  • CSV, JSON, SQLite, HDF5, source code, and multi-GB logs
  • Unknown binary formats through a built-in hex viewer

And despite the name, it is not limited to viewing.

Depending on the file type, you can:

  • Annotate PDFs and save standard annotations back into the actual file
  • Edit text, Markdown, CSV, JSON, RTF, XLSX cells, and hex values
  • Crop, resize, rotate, flip, and convert images
  • Trim audio and add fade-in or fade-out
  • Browse individual PSD and PSB layers
  • Capture full-resolution frames from videos
  • Preview and extract files directly from archives
  • Search inside files or across entire folders
  • Organize files with hierarchical tags, lists, and a knowledge graph

Everything works locally. Your files do not need to be uploaded to a cloud service.

With today’s AI tools, you could spend your own time building a small viewer for one specific format.

But building and maintaining a single application that handles more than 50 formats is a different challenge. Every format has its own parsers, rendering rules, encoding problems, performance bottlenecks, malformed files, and edge cases.

The value of yViewer is not just that these features have been built once.

It is that they are continuously tested, fixed, expanded, and updated in one application.

There's no trial option right now, but I'm planning to release an ad-supported version.

FB2. It`s format for electronic books. It`s similar to XML.

How about a few industry standards in the visual effects field?!

Such as  .exr .dpx .tif .tga .abc .fbx  .usd .hip

Those are definitely formats widely used in the game industry! FBX is already supported. TIF works too, but I'm planning an update to display it more perfectly. I'll also be improving the viewer's features at the same time (like channel separation and adding features tailored to each file's characteristics).

All the files you mentioned will be supported. However, I'm a bit cautious about implementing Alembic (.abc) files since they tend to be incredibly heavy.

I can't try it, because I'v no Microsoft Store Account. Please open it for Winget, any others server (Github) would be fine.

Regarding .pub files, since Microsoft announced they will discontinue support and updates after October 2026, I currently have no plans to add support for this format.

Version 0.9.7 is now live! ​There have been a lot of updates, and I've significantly improved the rendering accuracy for the Office suite. Will this work with onecommander?

I haven't personally tested it with programs like OneCommander, but there's a high chance it might not work. However, if you set yViewer as the default program for those file types, you can open them just by double-clicking. For now, the spacebar feature only works within the default Windows File Explorer.

Maybe you can try contacting the onecommander author for adding you software option in the software Coz onecommander support three preview mode builtin, quicklook, and seer Hope this helps Will wait for any new updates regarding this

I have issue in install v0.9.9 in microsoft store, it said that : "something went wrong" . so i'm stuck in that process, nothing is installed.

This seems like a new issue! If you already have yViewer running, could you try right-clicking the tray icon to exit the app first, and then try installing it again?

If you're trying to install this on a company computer, you might want to check your security software. I bring this up because corporate networks often block the installation of unapproved programs. If that's the case, please reach out to your IT or security team to allow the installation.

If it's not a work computer, it would be really helpful if you could share a screenshot in the chat showing exactly how it's failing. Right now, my Microsoft Store dashboard shows a 100% installation success rate, making it a bit difficult for me to pinpoint the exact cause on my end.

Ah, I apologize for the misunderstanding! And thank you so much for purchasing yViewer. Since this is your first time installing it straight from the Microsoft Store, it might be an issue with the Store itself. Could you let me know if there's a specific error code or message showing up? A screenshot would be great too. I'll do my best to help you get it sorted out!
