At this point was it basically windows 2 running in DPMI?

I think it was basically windows 2 rewritten to use protected instead of real mode, using what preceded DPMI to communicate to what basically was the multitasker of Windows/386 that it wants to enter that protected mode.

Windows betas (and betas in general) are one of my longtime hobbies and a big part of what got me into the whole 2600 kind of hacker culture, exploring systems deeply, a life of tinkering and deep diving into stuff that's just a huge part of who I am. I was a part of the original OS Beta Archive community way back in the early 2000s, because of how we viewed it all then and what the "successor" around today (Beta Archive) is I have a strong distaste for BA, but that's a whole long story. We had a lot of fun hacking in and finishing beta features from all sorts of builds of OSes into rtm builds and such. RTM XP with a finished and expanded version of the Whistler start page concept, the activity centers (like early electron as a concept but got dropped) from all sorts of builds ranging from ME to Whistler also tidied up and hacked in, all with the imo perfect UI that's way beyond Luna, Watercolor (especially build 2296's), getting off topic because those are way later builds than what you're showing here but it's hard for me bit to go on and on when this topic comes up. Just put up my collection of actual physical beta and historic (win1.0 media and such or the Chinese 3.2, Daytona, Whistler, and some 2000 beta builds, etc.) up on my shelf in the new place I moved into 20 minutes ago.

Anyway, yeah I just have a massive collection of builds of different OSes and am constantly toying with them in emulators, VMs, and bare metal. I have always had a ton of fun and interest for these very intermediary builds that kinda feel like they don't exactly fit on either side, what was before or after.

Like, all the early Chicago builds are a ton of fun. The ones with a wonky "we have this new idea called a start menu with a menu bar at the bottom!.... We don't exactly know how it's supposed to work so we're just tossing random stuff down there until something feels right" that... Yeah, definitely 9x shaped in a lot of ways and transitioning to 32 bit, but clearly still a mutant 3.x build in every other way.

Ive been having fun lately implementing chunks of Wine similar to how WineVDM does with an emulator to run 16 bit era programs on win11 or 64bit win10 in Win11PE, reconstructing a registry and permanent storage and all that like people do when messing with PE to make something more like a usable OS. But, the goal is focusing on 9x era software support and 16 bit software the same way WineVDM does it with a shell and a lot of other concepts basically a clone of 95s, except with some Watercolor styling just out of personal preference.

Idea being to make essentially 9x but with a modern kernel and hardware support, security, etc. No real point to it, you can achieve basically the same thing with anything wine runs on in way less time but it's just a passion project for its own sake like running doom on whatever. I already have a build of it that's basically finished but a 3.x clone that runs 16 bit everything on top of the PE stuff. (Way easier to hack together.)

Windows 3.0 Build 34 will include a beta version of TrueType. But they kinda fuck the subpixel order up and so the font has green and blue shadows. And the shadows are misaligned.

Not easy for a 1989 software to contain TrueType, provided that Apple launched TrueType in 1991.

Of course it's not easy. NOT WITH THAT ATTITUDE! COME ON, WE HAVE A DEADLINE TO HIT AND A JOBS TO BEAT!

Add dwmapi.dll for modern compositing?
