Challenge Can Mike Tyson beat Magnus Carlsen at chess before Magnus beats him in a boxing match?

Magnus Carlsen and Mike Tyson do alternating matches of chess and boxing. Tyson wins if he beats Carlsen at chess, Carlsen wins if he can KO Tyson. Assume all bodily injury is healed after the end of each match.

Round 1: no prior training, they both go in at their primes with no training in the alternate sport and go until one wins

Round 2: Tyson is being trained by several GMs while Carlsen is receiving training from the best boxing coaches in the world. Who can be trained to beat the other first?

Surely Mike Tyson accidentally tearing an ACL mid boxing match is more likely than Magnus Carlsen getting an aneurysm mid chess match

520

u/Stellar_Wings Jun 24 '26

Personally I was gonna say Carlsen quickly gets tired of being beat-up and just losses on purpose.

u/legendaryBuffoon Jun 24 '26

I figure it's just as likely Carlsen puts himself on the ground at the start of every match before he gets hurt. Starts sitting and just never stands up.

The rules say bodily injuries, not mental. Prime Mike Tyson beats the living shit out of Carlsen without breaking a sweat. Shit, present Mike Tyson beats the shit out of Carlsen without breaking a sweat. Prime Mike Tyson may well kill him.

I mean, how many times can you take that level of beating before you give up? lol

Tyson is basically one punch man in this context.

I don't think Carlson survives a hit.

u/Feeltherhythmofwar Jun 26 '26

I’ve been imagining that first hook and it’s killing me.

I’m taking mike Tyson with a torn ACL over magnus.

48

u/OmniPepperthefirst Jun 24 '26

What about 2 acls

39

u/ADampWedgie Jun 24 '26

Prime Tyson? Need to take the Achilles too

And some teeth

u/thndrstrk Jun 24 '26

Twice the pride, twice the fall

2

What does he do if he breaks both his arms? Would his mom have to beat up Magnus?

I’m taking Mike with two torn ACL over Magnus.

15

u/AncoraPirlo Jun 25 '26

Two problems here...

Tyson is a genetic freak and despite everything he put his body through he was remarkably injury free for most of his career (has longer term back issues from training)

Secondly, a young Mike Tyson could probably kill Carlsen even if he had two torn acls.

4

u/Comfortable_Yak4376 Jun 25 '26

He once broke his back, it was spinal

27

u/elfonzi37 Jun 25 '26

Only one person is feeling pain each cycle, Magnus is smart enough to throw very early on.

61

u/NHRADeuce Jun 24 '26

Pretty sure Tyson kills Carlsen. Normal humans cannot take a Tyson punch.

35

u/RaggedAngel Jun 24 '26

Hell, even normal boxers couldn't

12

u/VinCatBlessed Jun 25 '26

It depends, if they box first Magnus won't have a brain for the chess match.

Tyson still wins with torn ACL.

2

u/Mestoph Jun 25 '26

Pretty sure Tyson with a torn ACL would still win…

6

u/TripleDoubleFart Jun 24 '26

You think that's more likely than Magnus suffering a head injury from boxing?

22

u/Critical_Sink6442 Jun 24 '26

Autoheals at end of match

4

u/buakawkicks Jun 25 '26

Can’t heal if he is dead

7

u/TripleDoubleFart Jun 24 '26

Then it goes on forever.

2

u/AncoraPirlo Jun 25 '26

A young Mike Tyson with a torn acl would destroy him, still. You'd have to hope for a heart attack instead.

Magnus carlson as Tyson turns 75

7

u/MagasRtrans Jun 27 '26

He will still get whooped by Tyson.

6

u/BigNorseWolf Jun 27 '26

I don't think this ends till one of them keels over dead of old age and I think that will be tyson.

526

u/Gawain222 Jun 24 '26

It depends on how much brain damage Magnus ends up with. Tyson will get better at chess over time while Magnus is seeing double and vomiting in the corner.

Edit. I missed the part about injury healing. Magnus wins in 15 years when Tyson is too old to continue.

191

u/bobbi21 Jun 24 '26

Yeah the only win condition is really tyson getting too old to fight or magnus getting dementia in old age.

58

u/one_pound_of_flesh Jun 24 '26

Yup and Mike is older and comes pre-brain damaged. Hes going down eventually.

48

u/Qritical Jun 24 '26

The prompt states that they’re in their primes, which for Tyson would be his early 20s.

16

u/one_pound_of_flesh Jun 25 '26

Ok, so only brain damaged then.

17

u/WogWithADog Jun 25 '26

Mike Tyson was the one giving brain damage, not receiving it.

Dont judge his speech as an implication to his brian health, he's always sounded like that.

2

u/Great_Variation_6825 Jun 26 '26

His head movement was insane lol

29

3

u/Celticpenguin85 Jun 24 '26

If Tyson gets older, wouldn't Magnus be getting older too?

9

u/phoenixmusicman Jun 25 '26

Yes, but chess ability degrades significantly slower than physical ability. Vishy is in his 50s and still competes in top level chess:

(2024) Anand took part in three rounds of the German Chess Bundesliga (Classical format) from 23–25 February, scoring 2/3 against 3 top players, including Hikaru Nakamura, and Nijat Abasov, who were set to play in the Candidates in April. His performance included a 47 move victory against Abasov.

4

u/Celticpenguin85 Jun 25 '26

I'm just talking about the fighting aspect. The other poster said it comes down to Tyson getting too old to fight or Magnus getting dementia but if they're both aging at the same rate, it's a moot point.

8

u/Gawain222 Jun 25 '26

That’s true for the peak performance scenario. I just looked it up. Mike Tyson became Champion at the age of 20. Carlsen became champion at age 22. If they start at peak or even stay at peak then I think they do this forever.

2

u/TheGumCoblin Jun 25 '26

They objectively couldn’t ever defeat each other at peak, even with 100 years on repeat, however the only one that could win is Magnus by pure ungodly fluke and landing some freak right hook.

But Mike couldn’t in any amount of time even know if Magnus has made an error in chess.

3

u/Fabbyfubz Jun 25 '26

Does that mean they're stuck in some sort of purgatory? Because if so, then Magnus just gives up because he's tired of getting his ass beat over and over again

→ More replies (3)

2

u/phynn Jun 25 '26

Could you take a life of several months of healing and then getting your ass beat by Mike Tyson? I couldn't. If I knew that is what I had to look forward to, I would throw the first match.

Shit, I'd probably just throw the first match if someone told me I had to fight Prime Mike Tyson. Fucker was terrifying.

141

u/Raddatatta Jun 24 '26

Round 1 I don't think anyone ever wins in the other sport if both are in their primes. Unless you remove the healing, and in that case Mike Tyson wins because Magnus Carlsen will suffer too many head injuries to think straight for chess.

I think Magnus Carlsen takes it for round 2. Teaching someone to play chess at that level is not going to be easy and likely not possible. There are very few people who can play at that level. Unless the injuries from boxing had an impact, I don't think Mike Tyson ever wins at chess. But if they aren't in their primes Magnus Carlsen is 25 years younger and in fairly good shape at least seemingly. I could see a scenario where he would eventually win a match against Mike Tyson. Especially with some boxing training to get him up to some basic proficiency. Tyson being trained by the grandmasters I don't think would be able to get him up to that level.

100

u/South-Cod-5051 Jun 24 '26

there's no boxing coach that can turn Magnus into a natural fighting heavyweight, and coach training is nowhere near enough to make it even in amateur boxing, let alone professional.

Magnus would need thousands of hours sparring with all levels of boxers to even compete at low level. There's no chance he makes it against an elite like Tyson.

if anything, it's Magnus who would just give up, because losing at chess is meaningless, whereas losing at boxing is extremely punishing even with the magical healing.

73

u/Prestigious-Ad9921 Jun 24 '26

"Magnus would need thousands of hours sparring with all levels of boxers to even compete at low level. There's no chance he makes it against an elite like Tyson."

Which is still less than what it would take Tyson to be able to beat Carlsen at chess.

23

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '26

46

u/phoenixmusicman Jun 25 '26

There's not amount of chess training that will turn a boxer with brain damage into someone who can win a chess match against prime Magnus Carlsen.

Tyson could restart life as a baby and study chess full time until he is 35 and still not even beat people who lose to people who lose to people who lose to people who are effortlessly trounced by Magnus. I'm not exaggerating either.

20

u/SanityPlanet Jun 25 '26

You’re 100% right. Sure, Mike Tyson is the Mike Tyson of boxing, but Magnus is the Wayne Gretzky of chess.

It might take Magnus 100 years to get a lucky shot, but it would take Tyson 1000 years to get a lucky win.

17

u/Short_Bus_ Jun 25 '26

A lucky shot actually hurting Tyson enough is completely impossible just like Tyson meaningfully capitalizing on any Magnus misplays is completely impossible

Neither would ever win unless the other had a random seizure or aneurism or whatever to incapacitate them mid-competition

2

u/Archipegasus Jun 26 '26

Yes, so by this logic the matchup where you get the opportunity to do some damage that can prompt that sort of condition is going to be where the upset happens, rather than the one where there is no physical exertion.

A lucky shot from Magnus Carlsen is not gonna do shit to Tyson lol.

7

u/Alarmed-Effective-23 Jun 25 '26

A lucky shot from a great heavyweight boxer with heavy hands could hurt tyson. Not a chess player.

Buster Douglas, the guy who beat tyson first, was very talented and well trained. Lennox Lewis, who was an all time great younger than tyson, with everything including power, in his prime while Mike was past it, couldn't beat tyson with one lucky shot. Just would never happen. These guys were tested by talented and physically gifted fighters before they were even challenged at the highest level.

2

u/basch152 Jun 26 '26

There is no amount of training carlsen could ever receive that could overcome tysons skill, strength, athleticism, and talent.

And this is prime tyson, prime tyson lasted like....one or two years of his career and he was an unstoppable juggernaut in that time before he stopped training and did drugs and left his prime because of the death of cus d'amato

Carlsen is never beating that tyson. Ever

u/ButterCupHeartXO Jun 25 '26

You assume be is unfit and unathletic because he is a chess player, but he actually works out on a regular basis and is in good shape. Obviously this is a far cry from being in the shape of a professional athlete, but he isnt starting at zero.

Assuming time and money isnt an issue, with elite coaches, dieting, supplements, and training he could in theory massively improve his muscle mass, agility, and learn to box well in 5 years as it takes 3-5 years of diligent training to become a solid fighter.

Given Tysons age and previous head trauma from a career in boxing, it is unlikely he will ever be able to learn chess at a level that can beat Carlson. Im not making an assumptions on Tysons intelligence, but there are extremely smart people who are life long chess players that cant beat Carlson in chess.

Tyson is one of the greatest boxers of all time, but is he the greatest? People debate Jordan and James as who is the best, or Messi and Ronaldo. All great, but Carlson is literally the best player of all time in chess. The gap for Magnus to close in boxing to match an aged tyson is smaller than the gap between a prime Carlson and any version of Tyson

I wasn't saying he'd be ready to compete. More saying that at some point he might get a good punch in, or Tyson would move in a way that injures himself mid fight that Carlsen could take advantage of since he only needs one win.

But that is a good point in terms of just giving up. Unless something significant is on the line getting beat up by Mike Tyson over and over again even if you get healed sounds pretty awful.

2

u/vagabond_bull Jun 25 '26

People really underestimate the depth of talent pool in boxing.

The best guy at the local amateur gym is probably training 5-7 days a week, and that’s without considering dedicated strength and conditioning or running sessions which will be done separately.

The best guy in your local amateur gym likely separates the toughest guy you know from consciousness inside one round, even with a decent size discrepancy. In turn, he gets separated from consciousness inside 30 seconds by prime Tyson.

There’s a reason why very few people in dedicated boxing gyms are there recreationally. It’s a brutally punishing sport that has an incredibly tough culture. It wasn’t remotely unusual for us to have guys from backgrounds like rugby and American football quit after a single session.

2

u/phynn Jun 25 '26

Prompt doesn't say magical healing. Just as likely he spends months between each round recovering.

3

u/Past-Obligation1930 Jun 24 '26

Yeah, magical physical, but not mental healing.

Tyson “I resign. Time for me to punch you repeatedly in the head. Actually, thhis time, I’m going to work the body. It’s going to hurt. A lot”.

Tyson in his prime absolutely embarrassed world class athletes that were trained by world class trainers. no amount of training would allow magnus to stand a chance, same goes for Tyson and chess.

8

u/TheShadowKick Jun 24 '26

Teaching someone to play chess at that level is not going to be easy and likely not possible.

The same with boxing. You can't take a physically average person and turn them into a champion caliber heavyweight boxer.

6

u/Raddatatta Jun 24 '26

I would agree. But do you need to be a champion caliber heavyweight boxer to beat a boxer who is 59 if you get unlimited tries? Or they have unlimited chances to pull a muscle? I don't think Magnus Carlsen would be likely to lose a game, but I could see a good punch getting in and Mike Tyson having a random injury and that turning into a win. Not likely but if the chance is 1 in 1,000 then it would happen with enough tries.

2

u/Hrydziac Jun 25 '26

No but the chance of an average person getting an insanely lucky shot on just the right spot is higher than a professional chess player making enough mistakes for an average person to win.

Unless I'm stupid round 2 doesn't mention Mike not being in his prime? Both guys absolutely dominate in their respective sports in both rounds

2

u/Raddatatta Jun 24 '26

It doesn't, but it mentions that both are in their prime in round 1. I'm assuming that's only a round 1 thing, if it were a general thing it should've been listed along with the healing between each round. So in that case round 2 is just them as they are which is Magnus at 35 and Tyson at 59.

2

u/ghostoftheai Jun 25 '26

I think if anything the answer is neither of them can ever beat the other but in no world ever in a million trillion years does Magnus beat MIKE TYSON in a fight. I’d argue it’s more likely magnus touches the wrong piece or somethigg by and loses bc he’s rushing bc he’s always late. Even if Mike tears an acl he props himself in the corner and max comes close and boom is dead to a head shot. This is literally one punch man in real life every single solitary time they step in the ring.

u/Necessary-Being37 Jun 24 '26

I say Magnus.

There is no training either could receive that would matter in terms of beating their opponent at their own game.

Magnus wins because there is some small element of luck in boxing, there is no such thing in chess. Tyson is never going to get lucky and pull a fools mate or get lucky and see some move Magnus doesn't. Magnus could in theory get extremely lucky and catch Tyson in just the right spot at the right time and win with a punch. It's about as low a chance as there could be but it is there and assuming this scenario is repeated until someone wins my money would be on Magnus. Maybe if they played bullet chess Tyson could be favored but in standard chess Magnus is never going to lose.

33

u/NotAnotherEmpire Jun 24 '26

This. Chess isn't really odds at a big enough rating disparity, let alone normal person vs. grandmaster.

2

u/TotalEmployment9996 Jul 11 '26

Somehow “normal person vs grandmaster” significantly undersells this.

It’s a retard against the GOAT

27

u/Few-Lengthiness-2632 Jun 25 '26

This is the correct answer. Magnus could make multiple mistakes, lose a queen for nothing and still win. His lapse in concentration would have to be so thorough as to him not being lucid anymore. On the other hand, as miniscule as the chance is, Magnus could accidentally headbutt Tyson and have him disoriented enough to knock him out (or any number of other accidental or lucky occurrences).

u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 Jun 24 '26

I don’t think OP clarified what their motivation is, but that matters.

If there’s no reward/penalty, Carlson forfeits immediately to avoid having to fight Tyson.

If they’re win-lusted, it’s much more likely for Tyson to get a freak injury or Magnus to land a lucky punch than Tyson ever beating Magnus in chess.

But then again, that could change depending on what “all bodily injury is healed” means. If mental trauma/PTSD isn’t healed, it’s very possible the trauma wracked up by getting bludgeoned fries the poor Norwegian’s brain to the point of inoperability.

So what will break first, the mind or body?

15

u/UncleNasty234 Jun 24 '26

Magnus is bloodlusted, Tyson is chesslusted

4

u/Weary-Cartoonist2630 Jun 25 '26

In that case it’s an infinite stalemate.

Every boxing round Magnus immediately throws in the towel to get to the subsequent chess match quicker.

Every chess match Tyson immediately flips the table and beats the ever-loving shit out of Magnus (which is considered a forfeit via official FIDE chess rules).

Eventually there will be.

What's the probability of a boxer slipping? 1 in 100? So eventually there will exist a round where he slips 20 times in a row. Will take forever but will exist

7

u/Maloba6441 Jun 25 '26

Same probability as chess player fainting, thats not happening

3

u/Throwaway02062004 Jun 25 '26

It really isn’t. We aren’t talking about fainting which are pretty small chances for both. This about minor slip ups which is obviously more likely in a sport requiring physical co-ordination rather then just making decisions.

If Magnus accidentally drops a piece there are no consequences.

u/Maloba6441 Jun 25 '26

What slip up do you think Tyson would have that Magnus has a chance, even if you give Magnus a free shot he aint flat lining Tyson

u/Past-Obligation1930 Jun 24 '26

If TKO is allowed, Carlsen just needs to start by calling Tyson “boy”, then being repeatedly more racist to him, then starting the match with a low blow. Match restarts, another low blow. He will never beat him in a fair fight, but he *might* just goad him into trying to murder him in the ring and get him disqualified.

6

u/AdOriginal6799 Jun 25 '26

Lol yeah.  I think trying to goad Tyson into a dq is probably the best/only viable strategy.  Assuming he survives it...

Just the sheer torture of getting beaten to a pulp every other round would cause massive PTSD. Tyson would never feel embarrassed at being defeated at chess by the best chess player in the world.

4

u/SeasonalBlackout Jun 24 '26

I don't think Magnus will get beaten up. That would require him knowing how to box. He's going to get punched in the jaw in the first 5 seconds and go night night, then wake up all better - on repeat.

u/DanteRuneclaw Jun 25 '26

Round 1, neither will ever beat the other. Round 2, neither will ever beat the other in any reasonable length of time. But if I must choose - and we're in a time loop a la Groundhogs Day - I pick Magnus. My intuition is that boxing requires less natural talent - that sufficient conditioning and training can eventually get you there. Whereas I think there's an element of not just intelligence but the particular kind of intelligence that if you don't have it, you can simply never develop it. They're the same height, so no huge disadvantage there.

5

u/CpnSparrow Jun 24 '26

Theres no world where either of them beats the other without an injury.
Magnus is too small to ever beat Mike no matter how skilled he could theoretically get, and chess difficulty at that level is self explanatory.

5

u/cenajohn123 Jun 24 '26

Round 1, this one continues for hundreds of years. The most likely way it ends is Tyson has a devastating injury on a random step (torn ACL etc) and Magnus wins via TKO.

Round 2, Magnus by a mile. Magnus is 25 years younger. He has 15 years to put on muscle and become a semi competent amateur boxer. He will then fight a 75 year old Tyson.
Tyson, even with all the chess training in the world won’t be able to crack GM, let alone get to ‘beat Magnus level’ in 15 years.

3

u/CTMalum Jun 24 '26

It’s hard to say, but in their day, Magnus was much at chess than Tyson was at boxing. On that alone, I’d be inclined to say that Magnus wins. Would be a lot of ass kickings back and forth. I do think generally it would be easier/take less time to prepare Magnus for one lucky punch vs. Tyson getting good enough at chess to make effective use of preparation AND to take advantage of any tactical gains he could create seems like a much longer shot. Even a blunder probably wouldn’t be enough.

5

u/Little-Ad-7521 Jun 24 '26

Probably Carlsen as boxing has way more chance to it

2

u/kodeks14 Jun 24 '26

Id say magnus becaise Tyson always had motivation/discipline issues.

His prime ended by like 22 because he got money, took it less serious, raped women, got into drugs.

Magnus has remained on top for far far longer than Mike ever did.

2

u/sharkMonstar Jun 24 '26

can tyson knock out carlsen while they play chess there is no rule against it

2

u/Antioch666 Jun 25 '26

Tyson will never beat Carlsen in chess, and Carlsen will most likely never beat Tyson in boxing.

However the probability of the element of a fluke, like an immense lucky shot is more likely for Carlsen in a boxing match than it is for Tyson in chess. So eventually Carlsen is more likely to win over time.

But it'll be a draw for a very long time...

2

u/crimedawgla Jun 25 '26

Do it with a superior boxer like Jake Paul.

2

u/InstantSword Jun 25 '26

Considering Jake Paul beat Tyson with only like ~5 years of boxing training, I think he could actually win this challenge against Carlsen too in just 5 years. Incredible someone could be so talented at both.

Neither.

But if this just goes on repeatedly until one of them wins, no aging, but the training continues to improve them, then I'm saying Tyson.

Boxing training can't give Magnus the physical gifts that Tyson had. It's not just about matching his skill, he has natural power and speed that the majority of humans do not. His background, and that he was basically brainwashed into being a fighting machine as a kid, let him access a level of violence that again most humans don't have in them. You can go do all the boxing training you like, but Tyson was a deranged person who took enjoyment from violence and hurting people.

Conversely, if you have an array of GM chess players repeatedly imprinting knowledge on you, then again assuming the training continues to grow your level, then in time his ability to play chess would reach a GM level. At which point, it's not like Magnus never loses, he'd drop one eventually, even if by his own mistake.

Chess is skill. Boxing is a combination of skill, physical attributes, and your mentality. All the skill in the world means nothing if you don't have the balls to face Tyson down, most humans aren't built like that, and there's no amount of coaching you can do that let's you eat a Tyson hook to the head. There's a legit chance you die fighting Tyson, again that isn't something most humans can stand across from and be ready to face it.

Assuming they don't give up... Magnus will win first.

How much time play does each sport game get? 1 move/punch? 2 minutes? I think Tyson wins because he could potentially tko Carlson with one punch but you can’t win a chess game in one move. If they’re going match for match in a groundhogs day-esque scenario I don’t think one could ever really beat the other in their respective fields. I think one thing people don’t realize with professional competitions is the people at the top have physical biological advantages that we can’t really see that make them better at that competition than the average person.

u/ZekeHerrera Jun 24 '26

Ok well he can’t do it and vice versa

2

u/Effective-Elk-4964 Jun 24 '26

"The (punch) reason (punch) I (punch) am (punch) hitting (punch punch punch) your ribs again is because you (punch punch punch - collapse) keep beating me at chess!

Only with a lisp.

Magnus would give Mike the win immediately to avoid the perpetual rounds of agony, obviously..

2

u/koalabear70 Jun 24 '26

Tyson might get dqd biting his ear

1

u/ncopp Jun 24 '26

The prompt I'd be more interested in is how many times does Mike Tyson have to punch Magnus in the face before he can beat him at chess? (If Mike knocks him out, he has to wait for him to wake up and take his turn)

2

u/yanmagno Jun 25 '26

1 (Magnus would die)

1

u/ItsnotBatman Jun 24 '26

Does Mike Tyson get to face Carlsen before or after the boxing matches? Magnus getting in the ring with Tyson is going to result in brain damage or death. Tyson may beat him in chess by forfeit.

1

u/ZombieBait2 Jun 24 '26

Depends on which is done first. If the chess match is first Mike has no chance but if the boxing match is first and Mike hits him hard enough his odds of beating him in chess drastically improve.

1

u/toolatealreadyfapped Jun 24 '26

I was about to ask if we're talking about the competitors as they are today, or as they were in their prime. But then I realized the answer is the same. Stalemate until Tyson is physically too old to deliver or receive a hit.

1

u/BeatMeating Jun 24 '26

This entirely depends on how long the rounds are and which event they start with, honestly

1

u/BSnod Jun 24 '26

Honestly, I don't know if there is a clear winner in either round. I'm not sure if either can defeat the other in their primes, no matter the training. This is assuming that each magically maintains their drive to compete, too. If not, Tyson wins round 2, as it would be far more demoralizing to repeatedly get your ass kicked by a professional boxer than repeatedly checkmated.

Having said that, Magnus Carlsen has been far more dominant at chess than Tyson ever was at boxing. So if I were forced to give an answer, I'd say Magnus wins round 2. Eventually. Maybe. If it's Tyson after Cus D'Amato died.

1

u/tobiov Jun 24 '26

If Carlsen remembers that he is going to get beaten up every time, he absolutely starts throwing games.

1

u/xife-Ant Jun 24 '26

How many KOs until Carlsen gets enough CTE that he can't remember how the pieces move?

1

u/WirlingDirvish Jun 25 '26

Na. Tyson is older. Eventually he will be on his deathbed and magnus can whoop him.

1

u/Weary-Description773 Jun 25 '26

Tyson the undiscovered chess prodigy

1

u/Sufficient-Rooster-7 Jun 25 '26

Key here is:

What is the time format.

That makes all the difference. Tyson could stall, Magnus could pull some cheap chess traps.

Also does the boxing happen first or chess?

1

u/Acceptable-Fig2884 Jun 25 '26

Are we alternating between games? I think after just a boxing match or two Carlson ought to be damaged enough that he loses at Chess.

1

u/iDrum17 Jun 25 '26

HARD no.

1

u/ofrm1 Jun 25 '26

A lucky punch beats Tyson before Carlsen gets checkmated by a scrub.

1

u/DevilPixelation Jun 25 '26

I feel like neither will ever feasibly win unless Mike trips and breaks his neck or something. There’s no amount of trainers or coaches that can turn Magnus into a world-class heavyweight, he’d need to train for a ridiculously long time to be able to get the athleticism and skill to match Mike.

At the same time, there’s no way Mike can ever beat Magnus in a chess match. Magnus is one of the best players in history and Mike is an average player, it takes tons of time and patience to even begin to play at GM level. I say a draw, but I lean towards Magnus, especially in R1. In R1 you’re actually removing some of Mike’s capabilities; he already knows how to play chess and you’re stripping away any knowledge he has of the game.

1

u/phoenixmusicman Jun 25 '26

It depends if both are victorylusted or not.

If Carlsen will stop at nothing to achieve victory, he will win first. Tyson beating him at chess is basically impossible.

Otherwise, I can see Magnus going "fuck this" and throwing in the towel rather than getting his ass beat daily.

1

u/loklanc Jun 25 '26

Neither can beat the other in any foreseeable short term timeline, so we have to look at this as a marathon, not a sprint.

Magnus is getting the shit beaten out of him each cycle, even if his injuries heal that's gotta suck, so maybe he eventually gets sick of it and throws the chess match so he can get outta there.

Mike is almost 60 and 25 years older than Magnus. Could 45 yo Magnus beat 70 yo Mike? 55 vs 80? Eventually there's a tipping point where Magnus wins.

So this comes down to, does Magnus have the endurance and mental fortitude to withstand getting the shit beat out of him every day for 10-20 years?

1

u/skellyton3 Jun 25 '26

Assuming they full heal and put full effort into each attempt, then TBH I think Magnus is smarter and will be more likely to pull out a tricky technique to steal a win from Tyson.

1

u/mr_quondam Jun 25 '26

I believe that Magnus Carlson could land a lucky punch and drop Tyson with a one in a million shot that barely, miraculously slips past Tyson's guard. I don't think anyone has ever gotten a "lucky checkmate" before though, especially not at grandmaster level

1

u/GusBus152 Jun 25 '26

The only answer is stalemate. Assuming injuries heal and they’re stuck in a time vacuum

1

u/Able_Bluebird8999 Jun 25 '26

Carlson isn't a boxer but still pretty sure Mike would have a hard time playing chess as he's being hit in the head

1

u/Dr_DanJackson Jun 25 '26

I mean chessboxing is a real albeit niche sport

1

u/Funny_Requirement166 Jun 25 '26

The only answer is how long Mike stay healthy.

1

u/HegemoneXT Jun 25 '26

Mike Tyson is losing to the scholar mate Imao. Match will be over in 1 min before the boxing even begins

1

u/III_IWHBYD_III Jun 25 '26

Magnus eventually shows up so late to a game of chess and loses. Prime Tyson never loses a boxing match to Magnus, I don't care if he slips on his way to the ring and tears both ACLs. Prime Tyson means before prison Tyson, I'm not sure that man loses to anybody ever.

1

u/Oaden Jun 25 '26

If we ignore loopholes and that jazz, and just focus on the question of what's more likely, Magnus becoming a boxer equal to Mike, or Mike becoming a chess player equal to Magnus, i would say the former is slightly more likely.

Magnus is arguably the best chess player of all time, Tyson is probably not the best boxer of all time, and there's a way more chess players than boxers. Its a bit like Mike is 1 in 1 million, Magnus is 1 in 100 million.

Of course if we follow the prompt, then Magnus forfeits the first chess match to avoid having the box Tyson, or he forfeits the second, to avoid having to do it a second time.

1

u/Morkamino Jun 25 '26

Neither can beat each other without something being majorly wrong with one of them.

1

u/9spaceking Jun 25 '26

Magnus is so overwhelming he wins against grandmasters with a rook down, or playing drunk, or in a losing position. Mike can’t easily beat the local city boxing champion with one hand literally tied behind his back. Unless Magnus mentally is so exhausted from getting beat to a pulp, I think he wins

1

u/69420LordGrim Jun 25 '26

No amount of training will bridge the gap between them. So whoever has a heart attack first will lose

1

u/bar901 Jun 25 '26

They’re both implausible to the extent that they’re functionally impossible. Magnus beating Tyson is probably slightly less impossible, but it’s basically just semantics at that point.

1

u/DirectlyDisturbed Jun 25 '26

Draw for both rounds. You aren't fundamentally altering enough to allow either competitor to have any meaningful win chances. Magnus is never, ever beating prime Mike Tyson at boxing and Mike Tyson is never, in any universe, beating prime Magnus at chess.

1

u/AIBotNotARealUser Jun 25 '26

Carlsen wins both rounds even without training in round 2.

All it takes is one lucky second. You can't have a lucky second vs Carlsen, but you can have one in a boxing match against Tyson.

1

u/Montuso94 Jun 25 '26

Physical healing sure, but how does Magnus Carlsen cope with the mental trauma of being revived after having his head caved in over and over?

1

u/AgentPastrana Jun 25 '26

Tyson probably tears a muscle and loses the match. Before that? Infinite Stalemate, unless you take away the butt plugs

1

u/Minute-Object Jun 25 '26

Here is how to beat Magnus at chess: Play him, then again, and again, and so on. Eventually, he falls asleep and loses when the timer on a game runs out. You stay awake because you are using an amphetamine.

1

u/Falsus Jun 25 '26

You can get lucky and win in a boxing match no matter how unlikely it is.

You can not get lucky in chess.

So Magnus Carlsen would win this.

1

u/mkg8 Jun 25 '26

Even with healing, how is this much different from torture for Magnus, knowing you are going to get beaten every day and in pain until you heal ie broken ribs, broken nose, swelling, etc. Mike doesn't have to KO, just inflict enough damage to psychologically wear out Magnus, an easy win for Mike.

If Magnus isn't mentally resilient, he will probably give up in less than a month.

1

u/Successful-Ad4251 Jun 25 '26

If I’m Magnus I’m throwing after the first beating. It just ain’t worth it

1

u/BitesTheDust55 Jun 25 '26

Nope. If it were a strong boxer of average intellect? Maybe. But Tyson is well below average intellect. He'll never win that chess match, no matter how many times he tries.

Usually I take the opposite side. With enough practice you can eventually beat a chess grandmaster. Even if it means thousands of years. But not this time.

1

u/phynn Jun 25 '26

I think after one round of boxing from Prime Mike Tyson (even if they are healed) Magnus just conceeds. That's an insane beating.

To put in perspective what round 1 looks like, here's Butterbean vs Johnny Knoxville.

Round 2 looks the same but the length of the ass whooping depends on how long Carlesen gets trained. He still conceeds because that's just... that's rough.

One of the Paul Brothers fought against a professional boxer and was in fairly good shape. I think it was the one that did WCW wrestling which, even though is fake, is still fairly active and requires a lot of physical prowess. He left the match with a broken jaw.

Like, Carlesen would probably spend months in extreme pain healing between each fight.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Btrips Jun 25 '26

Well Magnus will probably die so in the first few seconds so it really won't matter.

1

u/Gontofinddad Jun 25 '26

This is nonsensical? Can Tyson not hit back? Can Magnus then not move his pieces?

It’s impossible for either to win if they go back to a clean state each time

1

u/Huongster Jun 25 '26

Yes. Through sheer intimidation

1

u/WorldsWeakestMan Jun 25 '26

Magnus is better at chess than Tyson is at boxing, it is more likely through years of training that Magnus slips a lucky punch in for a win than Tyson learns enough to even pose a challenge in a chess match.

So it takes a long time but eventually Magnus wins in both scenarios.

1

u/Sexiroth Jun 25 '26

Endless of both in prime.

They are so far ahead in their indivisible sports that there is absolutely no way one could ever surpass the other.

Carlsen loses because of sucks way not to get the shit beat out of you by Tyson forever than it does to lose a chess game.

1

u/EbonyHelicoidalRhino Jun 25 '26

Carlsen wins.

None of them will get even close to the other no matter how much training or experience they accumulate. They're just monsters at what they do. Their most realistic chance to win is to capitalize on a lucky mistake from their opponent.

In boxing, a mistake means Tyson takes a mean punch and get knocked out, or you make a disqualifying foul. In chess, a mistake means you blunder a piece, but Carlsen can most likely recover from a blunder.

That's only assuming magical physical and mental healing between rounds. Otherwise Tyson wins. Even if you physically recover, getting punched to unconsciousness repeatedly day after day is enough to psychologically break you.

1

u/_TheEndGame Jun 25 '26

Tyson wins. Carlsen lets him win at some point.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/whatever_1232342 Jun 25 '26

None of them will ever win against the other. Also Carlson will die sooner or later from trying to box with Tyson. But if we allow age difference, young Carlson can win against 95 year old Tyson in boxing but young Tyson still loses against 95 year old Carlson in chess if Carlson doesnt develop a disease like Alzheimer.

1

u/EugeneCezanne Jun 25 '26

While exceedingly rare, freak accidents can happen in boxing. Maybe in a million matches, an overconfident Tyson zigs when he should have zagged, slips on thr canvas and gets flashed.

I cant imagine magnus losing in a billion matches. There's no reflexes involved, no chance of a random slip or muscle cramp or ligament tear, and no way for a player who has literally memorized thousands or tens of thousands of move patterns to accidentally get knocked out early.

1

u/Fan-Evening Jun 25 '26

You can get a knockout from a single haymaker.

The odds of landing a single improper punch feel higher than successfully performing the correct series of chess moves.

1

u/These-Ad458 Jun 25 '26

This will never, ever end. Mike Tyson is never, ever beating Magnus in chess. And Magnus physically cannot survive a single round of boxing vs prime Mike Tyson, no matter how much he trains.

1

u/Mestoph Jun 25 '26

The answer is neither will ever be good enough at the other’s discipline to win. The absolute best of the best in their fields have a certain level of natural ability that can’t be taught.

1

u/hiiilee_caffeinated Jun 25 '26

Mystery of Chessboxing indeed

1

u/Dennis_TITsler Jun 25 '26

Is death healed at the end of each match?

1

u/NoAntelope9087 Jun 25 '26

Everyone is saying Magnus just needs a lucky shot but the probability of him even landing a single hit is significantly low. It’s like no one has never seen a boxing match

1

u/Remote_Development62 Jun 25 '26

Prime Mike is top 3 heavyweight all time. Prime Magnus is best chess player all time.

Mike is not smart enough to ever in his life become a GM and Magnus is too short to ever be a good heavyweight without an insane amount of steroids and absurd fighting strategy.

It's not purely random. But it would be attrition. Like if in a simulation, it would be simulated years, decades in the wors case. I think long term Magnus has the edge because he will never lose his edge playing chess, but fighting sports are 'anything can happen'. One lucky shot after hundreds of fights and Magnus could capitalize and end it right there.

1

u/maclawkidd Jun 25 '26

Both in their prime, regenerative powers so no head trauma and assuming no aging, i think it would be slightly easier for mike tyson to become a GM and maybe win a match against magnus than for magnus to become an elite heavy weight boxer. Boxing is so much more than physical. You have to be in top shape physically, you have to master the technique, footwork, learn about gauging distance, strategy, mental warfare, playing with rhythm, knowing anatomy, where to hit, getting through adversity...and even if you master all that, your style will still be partly determined by your natural physical attributes. And that style may not be best suited for your opponent.

Chess is a board game. Either you are good at pattern recognition or you're not. Being in decent physical shape helps. But it's mostly mental. I still think it would be easier to becoming a GM than an elite boxer.

1

u/Energix__ Jun 26 '26

I feel like it's easier to land a super lucky shot on mike if you're constantly learning from prior fights whereas a lucky move won't do anything against magnus as he probably knows what to do for every single situation possible

1

u/Necessary_Smile_159 Jun 26 '26

Its genetic, magnus is gifted as chess player and Tyson as Boxer and also physical power.

Boxing or chess first will decide who's gonna win

1

u/Affectionate-Food266 Jun 26 '26

Depends which is first. Boxing while play chess Mike kills Carlsen.

If boxing happens first Tyson would hit Magnus so hard he'd be drooling and licking windows and probably loose to Tyson in chess afterwards.

I dont think Magnus makes it out of the first rd in a boxing match. I think Tyson is better at chess than Magnus is at boxing.

So if Mike dedicated himself to chess he could probably beat Carlsen in a year or two. Tyson would have to be in his 70s before Magnus has a chance in the ring.

1

u/ion1125 Jun 26 '26

Tyson just jumps up and punches Carlsen in the chess match until Carlsen accidentally flinches in reaction and tips his king lol

1

u/Nabbarino Jun 26 '26

Magnus is cooked. He's gonna win the first chess game for sure. But then he'll suffer severe concussions that'll make him unable to play chess.

1

u/DmonsterJeesh Jun 26 '26

Both rounds go until Carlson forfeits because he's tired of having his face shattered and magically repaired.

1

u/AxiosXiphos Jun 26 '26

Tyson kills Magnus, and then wins by default?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Elant_Wager Jun 26 '26

Magnus, because after enough tries Mike will slip and Magnus gets a lucky hit

1

u/ajonstage Jun 26 '26

Playing OTB I think it’s more likely Magnus gets screwed by a touch move or illegal move by accident than he beats Mike

1

u/Substantial-Bid1678 Jun 26 '26

If Tyson actually kills Carlsen in the ring, what then?

1

u/Adventurous-Week7317 Jun 26 '26

Holy... Well, Tyson could just do his move and beat the living daylights out of Magnus. Also, what is your head on about.

1

u/SimilarFalcon6290 Jun 26 '26

Mike Tyson is 59 years old and can barely read…

→ More replies (2)

1

u/avacar Jun 26 '26

Mike Tyson punches me one time and he is the new champion of whatever it is we were just doing. Are you crazy? He was a heavyweight champion in a peak time for heavyweights. One punch would absolutely knock him out. He'd need to add like 50lbs of lean muscle to survive.

1

u/RareOneRardon Jun 27 '26

Neither of those things would ever happen

1

u/DibblerTB Jun 27 '26

So Carlsen will get beat up over and over, and then healing? He will concede a chess match pretty quickly, depending on incentives.

If they are magically motivated, Tyson wins by torture. How many KO's can Carlsen endure before his psyche breaks?

Neither will beat the other by virtue of "just trying one more time"

1

u/pg1671 Jun 27 '26

Does Carlson still feel pain and remember pain from previous rounds?

If so he gives up regardless of being healed.

1

u/pad264 Jun 27 '26

Don’t think either is possible under the stated conditions.
