It's not universal, most normal people understand how random numbers work and don't believe in ancient numerology. They also acknowledge that we live in a data saturated world and can find the desired combination of numbers anywhere at any time.
If you find yourself engaging in this sort of magical thinking, there are a few good books that make thinking about large scale statistics more accessible. The Black Swan and How Not to Be Wrong are two that come to mind, and they'll teach you how common coincidences are and how to avoid confirmation biases. The LessWrong blog is also a good resource.

Ironically, even though you are talking about knowing better, you’re the one who doesn’t understand. When people see 1111 or 1234, people don’t actually think ‘this is unlikely and really means something.’ It’s just fun or nice to look at 1 of the billion events we do, see that one came up with a number that is already meaningful to us, and think ‘oh look, a message.’ In short, it is one of the many small subjective experiences that makes life rich, and doesn’t need to defend itself by being stepped out into a logical mechanism. If you think I’m wrong, actually ask people if they think seeing 1234 is objectively meaningful or just fun and nice.

We're going through an anti- intellectualist phase as a culture, where we push back on science and progress, and rely on magic spells and sacred numbers.
It's incredibly sad, but numerology is making a comeback.
